Sidecar High Tech Hitchhiking Comes to Chicago

How neat is this idea?
SideCar is an interactive technology service and ride-sharing platform, that provides an online
provide exempt rideshare transportation. Essentially, a quick and hassle-free ridesharing
option that offers more safety than casual carpooling and is a completely donation-
based way to get around town!
SideCar is an app, so community drivers can be available for ridesharing
at any time. As our community grows, so do the number of drivers and
area of coverage. It’s brand new in Chicago – so give it some time to grow.  Check
your app anytime for a quick, fun and reliable ride.
SideCar is neither a taxi nor a limo service. It’s a ride-matching app that connects
people who need rides with vetted drivers from the community who are able and willing
to share a ride. All payments are completely voluntary and are handled via a cashless,
donation-based system between smartphones.
SideCar is a donation-based service. The funds you decide to transfer to your driver
are completely voluntary. To help make the donation system easier, we’ve included a
“suggested donation” in the app, which shows you how much others are paying for rides
of similar durations and distances. The suggested donation is constantly updating to
reflect new donations made in the system. The donation you make can be any amount,
including $0. Just remember to treat your drivers like you would like to be treated!
         SideCar
CHI will be providing DOSE-goers the opportunity to try the service and
snag a free ride to the Market this Sunday! Just enter the code
ILOVEDOSE for a $15 credit toward your first ride.

Taverna 750 Best Old School Italian with Contemporary Flair

Taverna 750, a top rated ZAGAT  hotspot in Chicago’s East Lakeview!
It’s been voted Best Italian Restaurant,
Best Hidden Gem,
Best Date Restaurant,
Best Brunch,
Best Sidewalk Cafe.
And BestGayChicago.com gives them 5 pink crowns!
Taverna 750 is the best of old school Italian with a contemporary flair. Proprietor Paul D. Cannella is bringing back his Grandfather Paul J. Loverde’s and Uncle Chuckie Abruzzini’s classic Italian tried and true family recipes from his restaurant on Grand Avenue in the 50’s.
Chef Christopher Coker has tweaked the recipes to perfection. The tastes and flavors are spot on. There are nightly creative specials and the menu changes seasonally.

My passion for food runs very very deep, as it is more than just a collection of ingredients and a means to satisfy ones hunger,” says Chef Coker. “My passion comes from the true power food possesses and its ability to do many things beyond simply nourishment.

The entire process of creating a dish is one of my favorite things to do in life.”
The quality of the reasonably priced dishes really gives the food at the
much pricier downtown places like RPM Italian a run for their money. “Food also has the power to evoke a wide array of emotions and intrigue all of ones senses. That is what I hope to accomplish everyday through my food,” says Chef.  “I want to use fresh seasonal ingredients as a vehicle to share my love for all things cooking, and hopefully have the diner experience that same appreciation. My goal is to sell an experience that tastes delicious and can be remembered far after.”
We love everything on the menu here. But I am very impressed by attention to detail, service  and presentation. Take the T750 Soup for example, a large ravioli pillow stuffed with chicken, veggies red pepper and olive oil, which is then sliced open tableside and filled with chicken consumme to release aromatic flavors. There’s also comfort food like baked mozzarella sticks, except these apps will be wrapped in phyllo dough, drizzled in a honey-walnut-truffle sauce and sprinkled with crushed walnut. Keep in mind  many items change seasonally.
They don’t refer to themselves as a tapas place, and it is clear that the dishes are quite larger than typical tapas. This a “sharing” place where people are encouraged to share their meals and the dishes are placed in the center of the table. All of Taverna 750’s entrees will be small plates, meant for sharing at the table. For small plates, the portions are generous and their prices are very affordable so you can share several items at one sitting.  Small plates will be served European-style, coming out of the kitchen
as they’re ready, and will be plated for sharing.Which is how I like it.

Brunch, dinner or late night bites, they have a range of items consisting of gourmet dinner, brunch and a full menu of  amazing tasty crafted drinks. There is  also a late night pizza menu for anyone looking for a nightcap and nosh.

Brunch is  very busy at this place (reservations HIGHLY recommended) they are  well known for their $25 Martini brunch, followed then by a liquid brunch over at Scarlet.
For $25 you get 2 courses  and 2 martinis plus a couple mimosas!  Fruit and polenta is soooo good. It is served as a first course – but I save it for dessert. I LOVE the Chicken Ragu and Biscuit as well.
Behind the bar, there’s a menu of 20 martinis and homemade cellos, such as lemoncello and orangecello, along with sipping liqueurs with flavors like pistachio and chocolate. All of the cellos are made in house. Some take as long as 30 days to make.
As we near the two year anniversary of Taverna in June, I’ve never felt more confident in the overall product that we are bringing to the city of Chicago.”  says  owner Paul Cannella“We’ve learned a lot, and we’ve grown a lot.  The food and beverage menus are by far the best we’ve produced to date.  When you combine that with the staff we’ve worked hard to train, and they’re passion for working at Taverna, I can’t help but smile thinking about how we are going to kick ass, and put a lot of smiles on people’s faces all summer long.”
Reservations are always highly suggested, as this hotspot can be very busy!

Benjamin Newby Shakes up Spring Drinking at Taverna 750

Benjamin Newby, a big name in the Chicago restaurant scene, he is one of Chicago’s most celebrated and recognizable operators and mixologists. When it comes to mixology, Ben’s cocktails embody his heartfelt, experience-led concepts. He is known for creating innovative drinks enjoyed by both the connoisseur and the person looking for a great libation.

It’s that eye for creativity and balance in his cocktails that has earned Newby numerous accolades. The UK transplant has lived in Chicago for the past eight years, and currently the Brand Architect for Hennessy Black.
His latest creations shine at Taverna 750. He developed a  spring cocktail menu and did some tweaking on existing cocktails, to create perfection.  He has launched six seasonal creations available through the end of summer and will roll out a patio beverage menu when the weather FINALLY warms up – that could be any day now!

They are all good. Trust me, I tasted them all!  But I have to say I really like  the tequila-based “Smoky Paloma” is paired with Taverna’s  housemade grapefruitcello, bottled overnight, and served in a smoking glass over a vanilla-bourbon ice cube the size of a softball with a sidecar in a fishbowl of ice, of course.  Can you say FABULOUS?!

“Pisco 750” is a little sweet + a little sour, mixing housemade pistachio liqueur with egg white and frozen pineapple. Very refreshing.

Also you should check outSan Remo, made with Hennessy Black, Wild Strawberry Tea Syrup, Squeezed Lemon, Apertif, Topped with Wild Strawberry Tea Foam–  the foam topping is awesome!

And the desert drink for me!   “Italian Cream Soda” with Orange Vodka, Lazzaroni Amaretto, Passion Fruit Syrup,  Orange Liqueur, Orange Juice, Topped with Averna Infused Whipped Cream and a cherry. Decadent!
Taverna 750’s original cocktail menu was more martini-centered and tweaked by Charles Joly, who now runs The Aviary. Newby is also rolling out new cocktails also at the  neighboring Scarlet, around the corner on Halsted.
The best of old school Italian with a contemporary flair.

It could mean big things for Lake View and Boystown. A study of the community
has long identified it seriously lacks hotels, a part of the reason why
the Ricketts Family now plan to open one near Wrigley Field.

One was also planned in the Addison Park on Clark development, but the developer behind that project recently announced the hotel deal fell through.

Officials with Ald. Tom Tunney’s office say a hotel in Boystown, however, might be just what the community needs.

“I actually followed up and saw the product, and it’s great,” said
Chief of Staff Bennett Lawson. “It’s very boutique. Our master plan
identifies we need more hotels in the area, so if the space could work
with the right kind of anchor tenants, height and zoning, we’re on
board.”

The developer is having a neighborhood meeting on Thursday, April 11th at 7PM at
the 19th District Police Station Community Room.
Everyone should
definitely attend and support this project. Chicago is very lucky to
have been chosen for their 2nd hotel location!!

Illinois New Furnace Law could Cost you Big $$$

URGENT NEWS to home

and condo owners!

WOW! I just found this out this past week!!

I had to have my furnace checked, because it was not firing right. It just needed a cleaning, but it is 20 years old.  So my repairman asked me if I had heard about the new law going to effect  next month?

2013 Federal Furnace Efficiency Law

On 5/1/2013 the minimum efficiency requirement for furnaces in Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin will be 90% AFUE.

  1. Any furnace replacement and/or installation after 5/1/2013 will require a 90%+ AFUE furnace. NOTHING LOWER CAN BE SOLD TO HOMEOWNERS.
  2. 90%+ furnaces are condensing units, meaning they emit water vapor
along with carbon dioxide in the flue gases which will rust the sheet
metal piping that 80% furnaces are exhausted with. Due to the corrosion
90%+ furnaces require a new PVC flue to be installed.
  3. Depending on the location of the new 90%+ furnace; the PVC flue may
be exposed in the interior of buildings and may require  remodeling
    following the installation.
  4. A chimney liner may also be required at the time of the 90+ furnace installation for existing atmospheric venting water heating

for more info, go to the web address below:

http://www1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/appliance_standards/residential/pdfs/cacfurn_dfr_confirmation.pdf

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN EXACTLY??? If your furnace is located in the basement or near an outside wall, your cost will not be greatly affected, probably a few hundred dollars more.

However, my unit is in a closet, in the center of my home.  The new furnace would require new piping to go up through 2 OF MY NEIGHBORS CLOSETS and  UP TO THE ROOF!!  Do you know what the added cost would be?  Another $2000+ !!!!

So for me, it makes sense RIGHT  NOW! Um  Mom,  I think I need a small loan….

You  until 5/1/2013 to replace your older  furnace with a new 80% furnace and SAVE NOW!

Must See Theatre! Under a Rainbow Flag

UNDER A RAINBOW FLAG

is Totally entertaining!

Story, Music, Lyrics, Acting and Direction are spot on! This musical play is destined for greatness!
5 PINK CROWNS!
It is funny, touching and an important piece of our gay history. And I can truly see this playing on Broadway.
Based on the real-life story of a WWII naval corpsman Jon Phillips (who lives in Evanston, IL) Under A Rainbow Flag is a new musical by Leo Schwartz based on Jon’s experiences and true
story, vivid account of  his gay soldier friends in World War II. And remember, this was a time when everyone had to hide in the closet. Leo has put together an amazing story with music and lyrics, that could play on Broadway or Off Broadway  today!
I am usually not into anything that has to do with old wartime stories. but this is different. This group of young gay soldiers meet on a train and it tells their stories of love and sacrifice.
ALL of the acting and singing is top-notch. Direction by David Zak.

Running till April
21, 2013  at 4139 N. Broadway. Which is great little theater in Buena Park!

Tickets are just $20-25. And so well worth it. Your support of this fine show  goes to the actors, musicians,
and other artists crafting this beautiful and exciting project.

Pride Films and Plays, the
producer, is a new organization developing new LGBT works for the stage
and screen. This is our first large musical project, and we need your
support to fully achieve our dreams.

Ultimately, we hope Under A Rainbow Flag will
have a long life at regional theaters everywhere. Your support now is
the first step to making that happen as we use our rehearsal time to
hone every aspect of the production.

Discounts available for veterans, students, and seniors.

a masterfully written polyphony about the mistakes we make, the
emotional scars we inflict on those we pretend to love and the
consequences of actions with which we’re left to grapple. Four actors

betrayal, desire and obsession. Skeletons are exhumed, lonely marriages

FREE Films March 20th – LGBT History

T’Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness: Queer Blues Divas of the 1920s (2011)
Blues history thru a lavender lens

The 1920s saw a revolution in technology, the advent of the recording
industry, that created the first class of African-American women to sing
their way to fame and fortune. Blues divas such as Bessie Smith, Ma
Rainey, and Alberta Hunter created and promoted a working-class vision
of blues life that provided an alternative to the Victorian gentility of
middle-class manners. In their lives and music, blues women presented
themselves as strong, independent women who lived hard lives and were
unapologetic about their unconventional choices in clothes, recreational
activities, and bed partners. Blues singers disseminated a Black
feminism that celebrated emotional resilience and sexual pleasure, no
matter the source.

PLUS!

Living With Pride: Ruth Ellis @ 100  (1999)
Ruth Ellis (July 23, 1899 – October 5, 2000) was the oldest known open lesbian, and an LGBT rights activist. Her life was the subject of the documentary directed by Yvonne Welbon. In this charming documentary, Ruth Ellis, a 100-year-old African
American lesbian, recounts her life. As a lesbian academic interviewed
in the documentary puts it, “Ruth is a gift to us” as she is able to
tell what it was like to suffer “triple oppression, being a woman, being
black, and being a lesbian.” Ellis tells about discovering her
sexuality some 80 years ago, and when discussing her romantic
involvements (which included one relationship lasting 35 years), she is
utterly honest.
At one point she is even asked about the last time she
had sex, and she replies it was when she was 95, adding with a laugh,
“that was a one-night stand.” A businesswoman, Ellis lived openly as a
lesbian and often played host for an active social circle of gays and
lesbians in Detroit at a time when mainstream America scarcely
acknowledged the existence of the community. The film is illustrated
with vintage photographs of Ellis, her family, lovers, and friends, and
footage shot in the present day shows her at dance class, having fun at
her favorite bowling alley, and shooting pool with friends. This is an
engaging look at a special character, a woman who was always true to
herself.

Proceeds from the WONKA BALL support About Face Theatre programming including its groundbreaking Youth Theatre, which creates critically acclaimed new work by and about LGBTQA youth and their allies.  The
Youth Theatre has performed on major stages across the country, and,
through its outreach tour, changes the lives of thousands of young
people each year.  AFT also boasts its annual, award-winning main stage season and the ambitious XYZ Festival of New Works.

Named for About Face Youth Theatre supporter Michael Leppen, the annual Leppen Leadership Awards recognize
those whose efforts on behalf of About Face Theatre and the LGBTQA
community empower youth leaders to take action and encourage LGBTQA
adults and youth to create intergenerational dialogue and understanding.
