Getting Into Face with JoJo Baby and Sal-E

Legendary club kid, doll maker, makeup artist, costumer, and penis-sculpture enthusiast JoJo Baby costars with his clubbing companion, Sal-E, in Bernard Colbert’s lush new  12″ x 12″ coffee-table book Getting into Face: 52 Mondays Featuring Jojo Baby and Sal-e
(Schiffer).

Bernard’s lifelong passion is to capture high energy, emotionally charged portraits of interesting people.

For 17 years, Bernard has been perfecting his craft, working in the field of commercial and advertising photography.

‘In the vibrant community where I live and work, I find what I have
always been searching for- a sublime energy. Nightlife activity blends
with the arts and diversity of self expression abounds. Here, I can
freely pursue my dream: to document and celebrate that spark within,
which defines the unique nature of our human experience.’

GETTING INTO FACE is a visual feast in the tradition of 1990s club kids. See
performance artists JoJo Baby and Sal-E use their bodies as canvases to
become inspired and whimsical conceptual characters, executed with
expert skill using original, theatrical makeup and costumes. In more
than 100 portraits, photographer Bernard Colbert rigorously captures
these two performance artists in genius moments as psychedelic Hindi
gods, comic book villains, fantastical creatures, astronauts, and much,
much more.

Colbert’s stunning portraits document these delightful
transformations over a five-year period and are the same body of work
featured in the Clive Barker documentary titled JoJo Baby. Through
Colbert’s collaboration with JoJo and Sal, viewers can experience a
front row seat to an ongoing show which has been entertaining club goers
in Chicago for two decades. This is a portfolio for the visually
adventuress and fans of true creative vision.

Every Monday night, JoJo Baby with friend Sal-E have gone to work as
hosts of Chicago’s largest and longest running house-music dance party,
the Boom Boom Room, which is currently on hiatus from its usual location
at Green Dolphin St., 2220 N. Ashland Ave., while the building
undergoes renovation. It took the duo hours to prepare, and Colbert was
there every week to capture the endlessly entertaining process. He said
he usually only had 10 to 15 minutes to photograph them before they went
on stage.

“Sometimes they would show up and I would look at what they were
wearing and try and quickly comprehend what they were up to, because
sometimes it’s high concept and it’s not obvious right away,” Colbert
said. “It’s interesting right away, but it’s like, ‘What the heck is
going on?’ So I scramble and try and make it happen.”

Colbert, who took courses in commercial photography at Columbia from
1989–1991, said he loves portrait photography and has been drawn to
performers such as models, musicians and athletes—people who are both
interesting and like being photographed.

The combination of unplanned imagination and spontaneity kept Colbert
continually inspired. He said the most successful images captured an
indescribable magic that would often occur.

“It was something that would elevate it from an interesting time to
really high art, and it’s something that fascinates me,” Colbert said.
“It feels elusive, but when you find that you can do it time and time
again, it’s really fun to keep trying to do it.”

The book will also be available at local
bookstores in Chicago and Amazon.com.

premiering something new this holiday season!

Giving homage to classic
noir films and Christmas television specials, MidTangent Productions
presents a dazzling and daring musical double feature like no other!

SANTA’S DEAD!

It was just a few days until Christmas. All over the world, children
anxiously awaited that morning when all their dreams would come true.
The elves at the north pole worked and worked. The reindeer were
groomed, the toys were made, and the candy canes were bent.

All seemed
quite well, but one person wasn’t happy and she was going to make sure
that this Christmas she finally got what she wanted! Mrs. Claus and her
conspiring lover, Bubba, had a plan up their jolly sleeves. The elves
suspected foul play. With the help of a private dick and the Queen of
the North Pole, these elves were going to get to the bottom of this, but
they had to hurry! With just a few hours until Christmas, could Mrs.
Claus and Bubba get away with this horrible crime? Would Santa be
avenged? Would the reindeer survive the cold after being completely
shaved due to scabies infection? These mysteries and more to be solved,
crime-fighters!

DIRTY CAROL’S CHRISTMAS

Welcome to Dirty Carol’s Christmas; a party like no other! Come join us
for a little singin’, a little dancin’, and a lot of drinkin’! Your host
for the evening, Dirty Carol, will keep you entertained while trying
her best to get into anyone’s pants. Both family and friends will stop
by to share some Christmas memories and perhaps a song (or seven). This
isn’t your typical holiday party, so leave the warm fuzzies at home,
because Dirty Carol and her friends will leave you feelin’ Dirty!

Seasons Greetings and Tax Season

Season’s Greetings and Happy Holidays!

You know what that means –
Tax season is just around the corner!
the 2013 tax filing season could be a “real disaster,” IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman said Thursday, if Congress doesn’t make key tax decisions before Jan. 1.

“You could have a real disaster in the filing season where there is total confusion,” Shulman said during a speech at the National Press Club.
Members of Congress strongly disagree on tax policy and most have agreed to put off any substantive changes until after Nov. 6 elections. That doesn’t leave much time to make decisions and revamp IRS procedures before the traditional Jan. 1 beginning of tax season.

Some strategic planning done before year’s end can amount to significant savings for some. I often meet with clients during the last few months of the year with an eye toward projecting their tax liability and developing a plan to reduce their tax liability.
A self-employed individual can expect to pay approximately forty-five percent tax on income that reaches into a higher tax bracket. Income taxed in a lower tax bracket is taxed at approximately thirty-five percent. The key to managing a tax liability is to know when you have income that goes into a higher tax bracket.
Single taxpayers pay a higher (25% versus 15%) rate of tax when taxable income exceeds $34,500.
You want to  reduce taxable income thereby lowering the tax liability. Additional business expenses will reduce all three federal, state and self-employment tax liabilities. Taxpayers can also purchase equipment or vehicles before the end of the year that can net huge tax savings. For example, a$2,000 computer purchase will end up costing only $1,100 when the tax savings is factored into the purchase. Learn what deductions you can or should take.
There are also tax deductions, retirement funding for example, that we utilize that will reduce the federal tax but not the self-employment tax. Planning and projecting a tax liability is an integral segment of the tax preparation process. If you are a small business entrpreneur that has a tax bill of more than $500, you should be paying quarterly estimated taxes. You could be hit with IRS penalties which can severely impact your business’s cash flow.
In addition to tax deductions there are some tax credits that have been reauthorized and some credits set to expire have been extended for two years.TALK TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO HELP YOU!
Tax credits are beneficial because they directly reduce the tax while a tax deduction reduces the amount of money being taxed. Once again I particularly like the energy credits, particularly the solar credit, and the education credits. Credits for windows and doors still exist, but are capped at 10% up to $500 (windows are capped at $200).
The modified education credit is now referred to as the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This credit has been expanded to include expenses for course books, supplies, and equipment. The credit is equal to 100% of the first $2,000 spent and twenty-five percent of the next $2,000 per student each year. Therefore, the full credit amount of $2,500 may be available to a taxpayer who pays $4,000 or more in qualifying expenses.
Remember that I am here throughout the year to answer any questions you might have, and I am looking forward to helping you maximize those tax deductions and credits in the upcoming tax season! MENTION THIS ARTICLE WHEN CALLING OUR OFFICE.
Happy Holidays!

About Face Theatre presents We 3 Lizas

A MUST SEE HOLIDAY SHOW
with not one Liza – but THREE!
About Face Theatre blends classic Christmas tales with queer
pop culture for its world premiere holiday production WE THREE LIZAS with book and lyrics by
AFT Artistic Associate Scott Bradley, music and additional lyrics by Alan Schmuckler, directed
by AFT Artistic Associate Scott Ferguson, playing through  December 23, 2012 in The
Steppenwolf Garage, 1624 N. Halsted St., Chicago.
WE THREE LIZAS hijacks Christmas classics to create a dark, sexy holiday musical for a queer new world. In a quest for unrivaled glory, Conrad Ticklebottom and his anxious assistant Reggie conjure the Great Queen of Wishes to bestow upon him the trinity of power: youth, wealth and beauty. Instead, Liza Minnelli knocks at Conrad’s door bearing holiday gifts and all hell breaks lose. Three distinct and mystical versions of Liza Minelli come to bestow their gifts in a Christmas Carol-style to Conrad. The three versions of Liza include her at her peak from the 1970s. Then Liza as we know her today from her Arrested Development TV roles and then we are treated to a sort of future Liza.
WE THREE LIZAS features AFT Artistic Associates Scott Bradley, Scott Duff, John Francisco and Arturo Soria with Sean Blake, Sharriese Hamilton, Sean Michael Hunt, Danielle Plisz, Andrew Swan, Dana Tretta and AJ Ware. Musicians include Alan Schmuckler (Piano), Jed Feder (Drums) and Brandon Mitchell (Bass).

You probably know the name Scott Bradley, who is part of the Scooty and JoJo team, who is best known for his locally produced super camp musicals like Alien Queen, Rosemary Clooneys Baby and Carpenters Halloween. “Really, Liza still sits in this strange place,” Bradeley says. “Everyone knows about Liza as a gay icon because of her resilience – taking the knocks and coming back. She always lived in a different realm than the rest of us. She has always been a part of a Hollywood and Broadway mythology.”

The creators of We 3 Lizas hope that the show will develop a following and become an annual tradition for About Face Theatre. And judging from the response of yesterdays audience, everyone LOVED IT and will keep this show alive for years to come.

Final Days to catch Scrooge and Marley in Chicago

Scrooge & Marley is a modern day variation on Charles Dickens’
classic story of the holidays, “A Christmas Carol.” On Christmas Eve,
Ben Scrooge, the man who hates the holidays, is given the chance to
begin again when he is visited by three spirits – the Ghosts of
Christmas Past, Present and Future. Revisiting the tragic missteps of
his life enables Scrooge to rediscover the joy of the holiday season and
make a journey back to love. Recounted from a gay sensibility with
heart, comedy and music, the magic of Dickens’ timeless tale comes alive
from a fresh perspective that will appeal to audiences of all
persuasions.

I urge you to support this wonderful independent film! It is very well done with excellent acting and SURE TO BRING A TEAR TO YOUR EYE! It is such an awesome cast loaded with great original music!

AIDS Foundation Chicago Need2KnowHIV

More than 20,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Chicago – three times the national prevalence rate.

In some Chicago neighborhoods, HIV rates have climbed to a staggering 53 percent in recent years.

That’s why the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is marking this World AIDS Day by announcing a new campaign called
Need2Know HIV, an initiative to educate people about the importance of HIV testing.

In
partnership with Abbott, a Chicago-headquartered global health care
company, AFC is using social media platforms such as Facebook and
Twitter to increase awareness and encourage conversation
about testing. The campaign began on World AIDS Day, December 1, and
continues through the month.

What sets Need2Know HIV
apart from other HIV testing campaigns? It highlights the importance of
diagnosing HIV in its earliest stages, as well as ongoing viral load
molecular testing
for those living with HIV.

Unfortunately,
many HIV-positive people are not diagnosed in the early phase of the
disease — when they are most contagious — and unknowingly spread the
virus to others. Testing is critical
to stopping the spread of HIV, though many people are not getting
tested and may not realize significant advances in testing technology
that are now available.

“It’s
simple: we can’t end AIDS without a stronger commitment to HIV testing,
and that starts with educating people about the importance of testing
to know their status and manage HIV,” said
David Ernesto Munar, AFC president/CEO.

People can show their support and educate others by visiting and “liking” the
Need2Know HIV campaign on Facebook, Munar said.

New
diagnostic testing allows individuals to know within two weeks of
exposure if they are infected. The newest HIV combo tests can detect
both antigens (the actual HIV virus) and antibodies
to HIV (the body’s response to fight the virus). HIV combo tests allow
people to know their status weeks sooner than they potentially could
with traditional antibody-only HIV tests.

For
those individuals who live with HIV, monitoring the disease plays a key
role in their overall treatment. Ongoing viral load molecular tests help
patients and their health care providers
monitor the response of the virus to antiretroviral drug treatments,
helping to guide treatment decisions.

Earlier
detection provides information to help people make decisions that may
reduce risky behavior. It also allows people who are HIV positive to
start on antiretroviral therapy sooner, which
benefits long-term health and may also reduce HIV transmission rates by
96 percent.

“For
nearly 30 years, Abbott has been committed to fighting HIV by developing
important tests and therapies for patients,” said Brian Blaser,
executive vice president, Diagnostics Products,
Abbott. “Our commitment to HIV continues today as we partner together
to launch efforts such as
Need2Know HIV to help educate people about the critical role testing can play in stemming the tide of this virus.”

website and
Facebook page.
