Abbey of West Hollywood Getting Closer to a Boystown Chicago opening?

For months now, it has been speculated the famed ABBEY bar from West Hollywood was coming to Halsted St. in Boystown. Abbey is making no comment.
As previously reported it was speculated that SBE had purchased a lot, at 3514 N Halsted St. Rumors were that SBE had looked at the old Brompton garage at 3532 N. Halsted, but a real estate source we talked to said the garage had way too many environmental problems that looked too costly for the investors.
No one is saying BOO about the project. However last week huge EFFEN vodka signs went into the Brompton garage windows – leaving very little room to peer inside! So it would appear, the ABBEY might in fact be going in now!

ChicagoPride.com confirmed several weeks ago, that a local businesswoman, Wendy Berger
Shapiro, is under contract to purchase the 12,100 square-foot building
at 3532 N. Halsted and that meetings have already been held with city
officials and neighborhood groups, including Triangle Neighbors and the Northalsted Business Alliance, to discuss plans for The Abbey. Shapiro confirmed the contract but also noted that the purchase has not been finalized.
The Abbey and SBE are still playing it cool. Saying nothing is really happening. – But come on – the EFFEN vodka signs – what’s that all about??
Stay tuned for more details. If the Abbey opens in Chicago, nightlife will be given a BIG shake up!
UPDATE 7-17-2012
THE DEAL WITH BROMPTON GARAGE WILL NOT HAPPEN, says broker Wendy Berger Shapiro. SBE has walked away from the table at this time.

The Abbey of West Hollywood Buys Property on Halsted in Chicago Boystown

I have been told by a very reliable source – that the owners of the world famous ABBEY in West Hollywood have purchased the Pink Parking lot at 3514 N Halsted St. for something like $10 million plus! And they will be bringing something quite fantastic to Chicago’s Boystown!!
The Abbey Food and Bar has been voted #1 gay bar in North America and the World, time and time again, by many magazines and sites including Best Gay Cities, Best Gay Travel Guide and Logo’s Trip Out Awards.
David Cooley is the master at the art of work and
play. Over the past 20+ years, his creation, The Abbey Food and Bar,
has grown from a small, West Hollywood coffeehouse to one of the most
popular hotspots in the country. Locals, tourists and celebrities
alike all flock to The Abbey for its famous Martinis as well as its
stunning, open-air ambiance and truly relaxed elegance.
“Over the past 22 years, The Abbey
has been a place that accepts everyone, gay, straight, lesbian,
transgender, bisexual and everything in between. We love our straight
girlfriends and they are welcome here, just not for bachelorette
parties.”
It has long been a policy at The Abbey
to deny admission to groups in costume, including bachelorette regalia.
Bachelorette parties had previously been allowed inside if they removed
their costumes.
The Abbey’s
recent Bachelorette Ban comes on the heels of a ban on gay marriage in North
Carolina and a number of other states across the south. The Abbey
encourages other gay-owned and operated establishments to institute
their own bans as a sign of solidarity until marriage is legal
everywhere for everyone.
“The girls are completely unaware that the people around them are
legally prohibited from getting married,” said David Cooley, founder of
The Abbey. “We love our straight girlfriends…just not for bachelorette
parties anymore.”

Worst Bartender in Boystown-Halsted St-Chicago “Straight” Igor at Little Jim’s

Let’s see: Rude, Condescending, Bitter, Affected, Patronizing, Angry, Jaded, Annoyed, Irritated, Frustrated and Hostile… words not usually associated with a hospitality employee, especially a bartender on Halsted Street in Boystown.
Well, do yourself and your gay friends a favor and AVOID “Straight Guy” bartender Igor at Little Jim’s (3501 N. Halsted) because there are MUCH friendlier and gay welcoming bartenders at Bucks, Bobby Loves and North End for your gay dollars. If you are a tourist, don’t risk it , and just avoid Little Jim’s altogether because Igor works most night shifts.(as of this writing).
We don’t like to write about negative things normally but we feel this guy must be called out for treating patrons rude.
Little Jim’s has been one of our favorite “Last Call” venues for over 8 years, as it is on our northward bound way home and we have always REALLY enjoyed our time drinking there over the years.
We have met “Little Jim” and chatted with him on several occasions, and have great respect and admiration for the man who launched the first gay bar on Halsted. Opened in 1975. Despite all the
competition that followed, it has held its ground. He is a pioneer to be commended. And it is sad to have an employee, a straight guy, tarnish this good name.
We first met Igor maybe 6-8 months ago – he is good looking and seemed somewhat friendly. But on our last few stops at Little Jim’s over the last couple months, Igor seemed so bored; and rude. Not just to us, we saw it with others. He frequently watches the TV and ignores customers at the bar. Last month I was with a friend who ordered a drink, while finishing another. And when Igor delivered the new drink, he grabbed the almost gone other drink, and threw it away. When my friend questioned, why he did that. Igor responded it was empty. And IT WAS NOT EMPTY. – If you don’t like your job buddy, it’s time to move on. You are in a customer service / hospitality business.
And let us just say, by no means do we care if Igor is straight. We have given our business to MANY straight guys asking for our gay dollar at both Cocktail and Lucky Horseshoe over the last ten years, but they have always been respectful to us. And they valued our business. Igor could care less about you. It’s a J.O.B. for him. And he does not do it well.
Usually, Michael and I are already a bit tipsy when we arrive at Little Jim’s. And we are almost always with other friends or meeting up with friends there, so we ignore Igor’s issues and attitude because we were busy socializing.
This past Wednesday, we happened to stop by with friends and were way too sober to tolerate Igor’s issues and attitude. When we called him on the carpet about being so rude, it really escalated on his end and he became hostile. Now I’ll be REAL honest here, there have been times at Little Jim’s when we probably didn’t need to be served more or a tap on the shoulder to go home may have been in order. But last Wednesday was not such a night… So when Igor threw my drink in the sink, said I was a nobody and I needed to get a real job, and asked me to leave for no reason other than I told him he was rude and we were sick of it, we were officially done with Little Jim’s.
So I took the high-road Thursday to call Jeff, the manager at little Jim’s and complain formally, and to let him know what had transpired and that we would not return and that there would be a story or two to follow on BestGayChicago.com. Since last Thursdays conversation, we have heard nothing back from Jeff and I guess time will tell both Jeff and Igor, how many of our readers heed our advice and avoid Little Jim’s altogether, spending their gay dollars on liquor elsewhere.
So Michael and Derrick’s lesson learned this past week is – enjoy your last call at Bucks, Bobby Loves or North End if your travels take you Northward. We WILL NOT RETURN to Little Jim’s until Igor is gone and we hope he NEVER finds work again on Halsted Street because we, as patrons, all people included, deserve a welcoming experience anywhere we go, spending our gay dollars supporting a Boystown establishment and Boystown as a community.

St Patricks Day Downtown Chicago

A modern day miracle occurs each year as part of the St. Patrick’s Day
Parade celebration when the Chicago River turns an incredible shade of green.
For the past 40+ years the Chicago River turns green
for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebration. It’s a breathtaking color of green similar to the greens of Ireland from where
it got its name “The Emerald Isle.”
The storyline goes: In 1961 Stephen Baily was
approached by a plumber who was wearing some white coveralls, they knew
this only because they could see some of the original color. These
coveralls had been mostly stained or dyed a perfect shade of green, an
Irish green to better describe it.
It was when Stephen Bailey
asked how the coveralls got this way, that they discovered that the dye
used to detect leaks into the river turned green, not just any color
green, but the perfect color green. Baily said“Why couldn’t we dye the
whole river for St. Patrick’s Day?”
A green tradition was born in Chicago.
And they actually use an orange dye, not green!
Downtown will be crazy busy starting at about 9 am! Over at DOWNTOWN BAR, doors open at 10am with drink specials! – or celebrate St. Pats in evening at 10pm with their Karaoke.

Cocktail Bar in Boystown Being Harrassed by Landlord…Cocktail Files Lawsuit….And Now Have Sold The Business
John “Geno” Zaharakis, who owns Cocktail, and general manager Dustin Hoffman filed suit July 29. The suit alleges that the building owner and management company worked with two former employees to tarnish the bar’s reputation and oust Cocktail to open a new bar. The suit names Robert Brumbaugh Jr., who has owned the building on 3359 N. Halsted since June of this year; Brumbaugh’s company, 3357 Halsted LLC; also named are David Sikora, Cocktail’s former manager; Alexander Stoykov, a former Cocktail go-go dancer; and Key Management and Realty, Inc., the building’s management company, which employs Stoykov. The suit claims that “on July 22, 2011, in a face-to-face meeting with Zaharakis and Hoffman, Brumbaugh stated that, unless Zaharakis and Cocktail voluntarily agreed to move out of the Premises and surrender possession of the Premises before the end of August 2011, he, Brumbaugh, intended to destroy Zaharakis financially and put Cocktail out of business so that he and Sikora could open their own bar on the Premises.” Brumbaugh did not respond immediately to a request to comment. Sikora declined to comment on the allegations. The complaint accuses Stoykov of ruining Cocktail’s relationship with its lender of 10 years, Capital Access Network, by telling the company that Cocktail was “a terrible tenant and that Cocktail was going to be evicted.” It also accuses Stoykov of delivering a false “ten days notice” to vacate the property on the 4th of July weekend in front of customers. “It’s just made it all living nightmare,” Zaharakis said. “I wish it hadn’t gotten to this, but it’s just for the best. I just need to take some time off.” The bar will continue to be called Cocktail, with Zaharakis licensing the name to the new owner, and the current staff will be retained. “The person who’s buying it has a good track record with the community,” Zaharakis said. “He’s managed bars before in the community.” Zaharakis said he plans to look at owning and running a bar again after taking a break, though he’s not sure where. The lawsuit is still pending and Zaharakis said he intends to pursue it.
Chicago’s Boystown bar Cocktail
is suing its landlord and two former employees for $10 million over an alleged conspiracy to ruin the bar’s good name and put it out of business.
Windy City Media reported that according to the suit, Sikora and Brumbaugh allegedly told Cocktail customers that the bar was going out of business.
Brumbaugh and Sikora also met with Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) early last month, the suit alleges, to ask for his support in obtaining a liquor license for Sikora’s, telling him that Cocktail was “going out of business” and that he planned to evict them. Zaharakis said he was subsequently assured that Tunney told Brumbaugh and Sikora that they couldn’t apply for a license since Cocktail already has a license for that location.
The stress has been to much for Geno and Dustin. Cocktail has now been sold.
Then it takes the city time to transfer licenses and approve the deal. It could be a couple months before the new owner is fully in place.

ARF Brings Taste for a Change to Chicago June 9th
Abzyme Research Foundation Holds Taste For Change Benefit in Chicago
The Event Raises Funds and Awareness for Innovative Therapeutic HIV Vaccine Candidate
The Abzyme Research Foundation will host a benefit in Chicago to raise funds to propel HIV E-VAC, an innovative HIV vaccine candidate, into human trials. The work is being conducted at the University of Texas Houston Medical School and California Public Health Service with support from the National Institutes of Health.
Abzyme Research Foundation is committed to propelling HIV E-VAC into human trials because of its preclinical testing that show its incredible promise for both a prophylactic and therapeutic HIV vaccine. Despite over 27 million in NIH support of the past 25 years, the innovations of catalytic antibodies and covalent vaccination have not attracted the Pharmaceutical support of an industry discouraged by an inability to produce an effective HIV vaccine after 30 years of trying.
“We are so excited to announce the launch of our Taste For Change Program in Chicago. This grassroots wine tasting series to support a promising therapeutic HIV vaccine candidate has already launched in NYC, LA, Miami, and now we are thrilled to be launching in Chicago.
As Founder and Executive Director at ARF, I am thrilled at the opportunity to connect to Chicago and share w the enthusiasm that has me fighting with everything I’ve got to make sure this vaccine makes it to trial.
“What’s the big deal?” you may ask. My favorite piece of media to share is this CBS newstory entitled “Possible HIV Cure?’ (the most viewed YouTube clip under “hiv cure“).
For a modest $20 donation come taste delicious wines at Mini Bar paired with flatbread pizzas, tapas tastings, and small bites from Mini Bars delicious selection and TASTE FOR CHANGE.
RSVP on Facebook, and we look forward to seeing you there!”
