Warm Weather on Friday Night Helped Make Halloween in Boystown a Smashing Success
65 degrees on a warm Friday night, made Halloween in Boystown a smashing success this year!
CLAY AIKEN was out showing off his new gayby, 4 Batmans, 3 Supermans, 1 Wonder Woman and 1 Robin kept the streets safe, and since I don’t eat candy, there was plenty of skin for my eyes to feast on!

Best Sushi in Boystown Chicago – KANOK
Located on a stretch of Broadway Avenue in Boystown, where sushi places practically outnumber people, Kanok offers a surprising menu that stands out from the rest. Impressive selection of different platters and reasonably priced rolls. Beautifully prepared and fresh!
Kanok offers a wide variety of noodle and rice dishes, most under $9 and come in big portions. Its main courses seem to take inspiration from all over Asia with selections like Kung Pao chicken, Korean barbecued beef ribs and salmon teriyaki. BYOB (with no corkage fee) saves some $ on the wallet if you want to bring a bottle or two of wine in with you. PLUS, Tuesdays and Thursdays they offer an amazing $22 per person all-you-can-eat menu! Chicago Gay Beach – Hollywood / Osterman
![]()
(all photos in this article by BRENDEN-JOHN)SUMMERTIME FUN!
Summer got off to a slow start here in Chicago, but finally,
I think the warm weather is here to stay and the beaches are busy!
![]()
The gay beach is Hollywood Beach. (AKA Kathy Osterman Beach) The gays and gay friendly people hang out at the southern end of the beach. ( or what some say is the east side – to the right). If you are driving out Lake Shore Drive, exit at Bryn Mar and start looking for parking, and the beach is a short walk.
Sundays are always busy, with anywhere from 200-250 people out there. And you may even find people photographer BRENDEN-JOHN out there shooting photos of hot men! He shoots a lot of photos at events and clubs around gay Chicago and many of photos can be seen on his MySpace page.

Chicago also has the most swimable and most guarded waterfront of any single municipality in the world. While many patrons complain about the cleanliness of the water, Chicago boasts the cleanest urban waterfront in the United States, and second in the world only to Stockholm; water is tested daily by the Chicago Park District for E. coli and other dangers. – The beaches are staffed through Labor Day – but weather permitting, you will find the boys out here through early fall, if it’s warm enough!
SEE YOU AT THE BEACH!

Roscoe’s – Best Summer Patio For Boy Watching in Chicago…And You Can Bring Your Dog Too!
Located right in the heart of Boystown, Roscoe’s is the place to hang out in the summer on patio, have some great food, boy watch…and now, you can even bring your dog too!
Roscoe’s
3356 N Halsted St @ Roscoe,
773-281-3355
Long considered one of Chicago’s favorite gay clubs, Roscoe’s offers a friendly atmosphere and a variety of entertainment. There is no stand-and-pose attitude here – everyone comes to drink and have fun. The club itself is divided into five major areas, each with its own bar. The front room has a genuine tavern feel with dark wood, copper bar, large windows, lots of video screens and a pool table.
Toward the back, you’ll find a dance floor and an outdoor patio. Regular drink specials (like pitchers of Long Island Ice Tea or Vodka and Lemonade), theme nights, Post Office Sundays and special events keep things hoping just about everyday.
In the summer months, the outdoor cafe serves up food from about Noon-10pm. Excellent appetizers like Artichoke Dip and Pesto, Tomatoe, Goat Cheese Pizza. Great salads, sandwiches and wraps, there is something to satisfy everyones taste. Roscoe and Halsted is the epicenter of Boystown and a great place to watch people….especially the hot guys walking by!
Thanks to an ordinance passed this year in Chicago, this is the first season the city officially allows dogs on patios—as long as the bar or restaurant has a Dog Friendly Area License. And Roscoe’s does. Of course, there are a few rules:
• You must keep Rover on a leash.
• You must have you dog’s rabies vaccination tag or other proof of rabies shot.
• The restaurant must have outdoor seating accessible from the street—you can’t walk through an indoor area to get to a patio.
• Don’t expect any food for Fido: These spots are only allowed to provide water for your pooch.
Celebrating 21 years! Owner Jim Ludwig goes out of his way to make Roscoe’s a friendly place.

Gay Chicago Pride Weekend June 28-29
Chicago Gay Pride gets bigger and bigger every year! This year on Saturday June 28th, from 11am – 9pm, the streets are closed on Halsted and Waveland for a day long of entertainment.
Hosted by (and benefiting) the Northalsted Area Merchants Association — the same group behind the wildly popular Northalsted Market Days (set for the weekend of August 9-10) — this equally crowd-pleasing gay and lesbian celebration of community pride will be back bigger than ever in its 6th year!
Pride Fest showcases an eclectic lineup of arts & crafts, food and other vendors. It also features entertainment on two stages including one dedicated to some of Chicago’s fine performers in the gay community.
At the Main Stage…..
1:00 PM kicks off with a Pet parade (register at noon)
Big name performers this year include ;
2:30 PM – Kimberly Locke 3:30 PM – Frenchie Davis
5:30 PM – Inaya Day 6:45 PM – Martha Wash 7:30 PM – Tiffany
FOR A COMPLETE LINEUP OF EVERYTHING, VIEW INFORMATION AT THEIR MAIN SITE!
Then get some rest, because Sunday June 29th, the 39th annual Pride Parade steps off at noon.
The parade is usually a couple hours and attendance is close to 500,000. If crowds are too much for you, some of the bigger bars broadcast the parade into their establishments via camera’s on the streets, so you can remain a little cooler and sip on beverages.
If you want a front row seat, get there early.
I have seen some people claiming their spots 6-8 hours in advance!
Parking is LIMITED!
Plan on walking, cabbing, use the CTA, biking….whatever.
Complete parade lineup is available online.

Best Italian Food and Tiramisu Uptown Chicago
Just a few blocks from Boystown and Andersonville, is Anna Marie Pasteria– a little hidden gem with great Italian food and consistently voted best tiramisu in the city of Chicago! Service is always great and the food is always great in this quaint little spot ran by 2 sisters.
A mix of modern and traditional Italian cuisine, the cozy ristorante has long been a local favorite. Sisters Anna and Maria, originally from the Basilicata region of southern Italy, first opened the doors of Anna Maria Pasteria in 1989.
Beginning at age seven, Anna fell in love with cooking, creating her first plate of Pasta e Fagioli, a simple peasant dish which is now an Italian specialty. Enamored with cuisine and hospitality, Maria followed the family tradition and put her heart into making the best and most heavenly Tiramisu.
After nearly two decades, Anna and Maria continue to dedicate themselves to the finest home-made Italian cuisine and service. Each entree is prepared to order with only the finest and freshest ingredients.
I have sampled many of their dishes from Chicken with Artichokes (Pollo Carciofo), traditional Veal Picatta, to special pasta dishes made with creamy pesto sauces!
Everything has a delicious taste! And the Ceasar salad dressing was excellent. – And you must save room for the Chicago famous Tiramisu! Voted the best in the city! Perfectlt proportioned amounts of expresso, lady fingers and marscapone cheese.

Miss Foozie – Fun and Foozie-licious
If you’re coming to Chicago for a visit, no visit would be complete without meeting Miss Foozie! The unofficial First Lady of Boystown! She can be seen all over town making personal appearances each week at various night spots. Currently, the best way to catch her are Saturday nights at CIRCUIT and Sunday afternoons at ROSCOES. – If you live in Chicago, chances are you have already been kissed the glittery, friendly, effervescent Foozie.
It’s impossible to imagine the Windy City without Miss Foozie brightening up the social scene with a glitter-festooned face, big smile, warm hugs, adored clarion call—”Hello Pineapple!”—and a loving heart bigger than her hair.
“It started as a joke,” Miss Foozie says of her first appearance during her 1997 birthday party at Chicago’s Circuit Nightclub. – What started as a joke catapulted Foozie into the spotlight within a few years. Miss Foozie became a gay household name as the number one Chicago entertainer, nightlife hostess and general purveyor of feeling good featured in every regional establishment and during every special event.
Her local popularity parlayed into national appeal, with Miss Foozie making waves in Hawaii, Florida, New York, D.C., California, Las Vegas and Wisconsin. Her one-of-a-kind charm caught the attention of RuPaul, Kelly Osbourne, Bruce Vilanch, Lady Bunny, as well as film and television producers .
Miss Foozie is not a “drag queen”; Miss Foozie is a “personality.” She is funny! She’ll make you laugh. She will make you feel good. She will also love you because Miss Foozie loves people. She always does.

The Gay Beach in Chicago is Hollywood / Osterman Beach
You’ll almost mistake Lake Michigan for an ocean with its vast expanse and seemingly endless shore. With beautiful blue water as far as the eye can see, you may think you’ve gone from Chicago to southern California. Chicago beaches are free to the general public, and officially open for swimming from the Friday before Memorial Day to Labor Day, 9am – 9:30pm.
However, if weather permits, the beaches in Chicago can have sun bathers in early May and as late as October – but there are no lifegaurds on duty.
What to Know About Chicago Beach Pollution
Occasionally, the water along Chicago beaches can reach a bateria level that may be unsafe for swimming. The park district has instituted a flag system to advise swimmers as to water conditions — here’s a quick guide to help you stay safe. Normally the water is very clean and very safe.
Dogs are allowed at the beach’s at Belmont Harbor and also Montrose Beach.
Lots of hotties and people watching and Vollyball activity at North Avenue Beach.
The gay beach is Hollywood Beach. (AKA Kathy Osterman Beach) The gays and gay friendly people hang out at the southern end of the beach. Weather permitting, the gay boys will be out sunnning themselves late April thru October! But any given Sunday in the summer there are about 200-300 people out here.
(Photo by Michael Snell – BLUE PHOTOGRAPHY)
The beaches in Chicago are an extensive network of waterfront recreational areas in the Chicago Park District. Today, the entire 28 miles (45 km) Chicago lakefront shoreline is man-made. There are twenty nine lakefront beaches in Chicago along the shore of Lake Michigan. Two more are located within city parks. Currents and wave action in Lake Michigan tend to move sand from north to south, where it eventually ends up in the Indiana Dunes. Winter storms erode some of Chicago’s beaches, and deposit the sand on others, requiring the Park District to supplement tons of sand yearly. The Chicago Lifeguard Service force is the largest of its kind in the nation, employing over a thousand guards in the summer (between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend).

Moving To Gay Chicago
Chicago is somewhat of a Midwest melting pot. And the jewel of the Midwest!
A lot of people born in small Midwest towns seem to gravitate to the big city. Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa….boys and girls looking to escape their small town blues, head to Chicago!
Especially in the Spring. May 1st is the busiest moving week of the year here in Chicago! The Chicago tradition of moving on the first day of May can be traced back to English and Dutch practices that were passed on by immigrants. In 1911 rules were enacted to allow leases to be made at any time of the year – however, May continues to be the most popular month to move. With an average temperature of 69 degrees, it makes sense that Chicagoans would want to move in May, before the heat of summer sets in.
“I was born and raised in San Francisco, and I think Chicago is a better city for gay people. It’s not as politicized as SF, people are more open and relaxed here. If you want to be really “out” go to BoysTown, (Lakeview) centering on Halsted Street. If you just want to be yourself and be comfortable, people are very friendly, open and accepting just about anywhere in town. There is a quieter, but growing gay community in the Edgewater, East Rogers Park areas too. ” – Bob
“I like Oak Park. It has the highest gay population of any suburb in Chicago. Don’t be afraid by the word suburb. It’s a very urban suburb and only 11 miles from downtown Chicago. The Green line L (subway) train has 2 stops in Oak Park and will take you into the city in 24 minutes. My husband uses it daily and it’s great. Oak Park is a beautiful suburb with lots to offer, great old architecture and a very accepting and liberal population. It’s not cheap but you can easily live there without a car and may find it a bit more reasonable than Chicago. It’s very diverse. There are people of all colors, sexual orientations, ages, etc. It’s a very accepting community.” – Marcus
“I was born and raised in a small town in Ohio. There were no other gay people that I knew of near me and only one gay bar, which was 30 miles away. I ran to Chicago when I turned 21, and never looked back! It’s amazing here! The whole city is very gay-friendly, for the most part. I feel I can just relax and be ME. “ – Susan
“Andersonville isn’t nearly as “out” as Boystown is. Boystown is to RuPaul as Andersonville is to Ellen Degeneres. Boystown revels in it and shouts, “look how gay I am!” whereas Andersonville keeps to itself without keeping it a secret.” – Drover
Besides the gay bars and nightclubs, Chicago offers gay churches, gay sports teams, gay men’s chorus, gay square dancing, theatre, and lots of dining choices. For the newly transplanted, Chicago offers many exciting choices and the opportunity to feel like part of a community and be welcomed by a very accepting city!

Best Broadway Theatre in Chicago
![]()
![]()
Over the last two years Broadway In Chicago, a leading Chicago-based presenter of live theatre and a joint entertainment venture between Live Nation and the Nederlander Organization, has seen breakthrough results, with vitality and prosperity of Chicago’s Downtown Theatre District.
A significant finding is Broadway In Chicago’s position as a premiere destination for the city’s many tourists and visitors. With an annual attendance figure of 1.5 million theater patrons, over 42% of audiences are traveling to Chicago from out-of-state to see long-running shows like Wicked. Theatre patrons occupy over 500,000 hotel room nights per year, more than the top ten city conventions combined and theatre patrons spend more than $75 million at local restaurants while visiting the area.
“The record-breaking success of Wicked combined with the growth of the Downtown Theatre District has changed the way Broadway producers view Chicago. It is no longer simply a stop on the touring road. It has become, instead, a place where long running success can be sustained with the support of the City of Chicago and Mayor Daley. The future for Chicago as a national center for theatre looks very bright and everyone with Wicked is proud to be a part of the impressive results of this study,” explains Wicked producer David Stone.
And gay theatre blossoms as well. Since 1995, Bailiwick Repertory has made its home in the Bailiwick Arts Center, 1229 W. Belmont. The 150-seat Mainstage, 90-seat studio, and 40-seat loft contained in the Bailiwick building have allowed Bailiwick to further explore its art with staged readings, performance pieces, and workshops of new work.
And right next door is theTheatre Building Chicago. Celebrating 30 years in Chicago, they are an incubator to develop original musical works and emerging theatre companies and artists.

Santiago Calatrava and the Chicago Spire
The Chicago Spire! The presentation at their site is AMAZING! The Chicago Spire is a supertall skyscraper that will stand taller than Chicago’s Sears Tower and New York‘s upcoming Freedom Tower, as well as Toronto‘s CN Tower, to become North America‘s tallest free-standing structure and the world’s tallest all-residential building.
Inspired by nature – Imagined by Calatrava! The building was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and is being developed by Garrett Kelleher of Shelbourne Development Group, Inc. The Chicago Spire is scheduled to be completed in 2010/2011 with 150 floors – a unique collection of 1200 residences overlooking Lake Michigan. No two residences the same!
Christopher T. Carley of the Fordham Company, the project was supported by many Chicagoans and city officials. After several months of development, Carley failed to acquire necessary financing and the project was taken over by Garrett Kelleher of the Shelbourne Development Group. Since that time, three major revisions were made to the design.
