MotorBall Returns to Detroit June 5th

motorball-detroit-circuit-party

Detroit isn’t necessarily on everyone’s radar as a gay summer dance destination, but a non-profit organization is changing that. MotorBall, back for its second year, kicks off LGBT Pride Month with a weekend of events June 5-7, 2015.
After a nearly 11 year hiatus, MotorBall was resurrected in 2014 for a 20th Anniversary celebration. With a limited budget and a small group of volunteers, MotorBall 2014 was a success, raising nearly $7,000 for Michigan AIDS Coalition (MAC). Thrilled with the results, MAC reached out to the founders of MotorBall, Geared For Life (GFL), and brought the event into MAC’s portfolio of fundraisers, which provide much needed funds for outreach, education, and prevention services in Michigan’s HIV/AIDS community.
MotorBall’s history is rich and spans over a decade. Originally created in 1994, the “GEAR Party,” which stood for “Generating Education, Awareness, and Respect,” was held at The Majestic Ballroom in Detroit. “The first party was so fun and went off without a hitch – even after two power surges blew the circuits at The Majestic,” says Tracy Hoffman, one of the founding members of Geared for Life.
The first event raised more than $15,000 for area HIV/AIDS organizations providing critical services in the height of the epidemic. The following years continued to raise funds – $200,000 in total – until the event was retired in 2005.
The parties, in their heyday, were held at various venues throughout Metro Detroit and brought in major DJs, entertainers, and out-of-town supporters. Centaur Music even produced three albums for MotorBall in its Party Groove lineup. MotorBall’s storied and proud history as one of the great circuit parties in the US and included performances by DJs Susan Morabito, Paulo, Tracy Young, Julian Marsh, Manny Lehman, Teri Bristol, Billy Carroll, Chuck Arida, the late-great BUC, Alyson Calagna, Maryalice, David Knapp, and so many more who all spun at the event.
The current organizers of MotorBall are a mix of alum from years past and some new faces.  Terry Ryan, CEO of MAC, says, “I’ve always cherished my memories and the friends I made at this event and am glad that we’ve been able to bring the MotorBall brand back.”
Eddie Mulak, MotorBall’s Event Director for 2015, remembers the first MotorBall and aims to bring the event back to its must-attend status. “Detroit it primed to host a world-class event for the LGBT community again. I’m proud to be entrusted with guiding this party back to a must-attend event.”
Joining the team again this year is Derek Zachariah, who originally became involved with Geared For Life and MotorBall twenty years ago. Asked to play a key role in last year’s Anniversary party, Zachariah also sits on the Board of AIDS Walk Detroit and is deeply involved with Michigan Greyhound Connection and other local non-profits. GFL founders and alum Tracy Hoffman and John Joanette join the team as consultants.
MotorBall kicks off in Detroit with its Opening Party 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, June 5 at Club Gold Coast with DJ Josh Karmin (Detroit/Toronto). MotorBall 2015 will be held from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at St Andrew’s Hall and The Shelter, featuring DJ Chris Spinazzola (Chicago), DJ Steve Dearborn (Detroit), DJ Lena (Detroit), and DJ Mike Trombley (Macho City/Detroit).  MotorBall is an Official After-Party of Motor City Pride. Many people wonder what it is going to cost?

The cost of your hair transplantation depends on the amount of hair being transplanted and is generally considered plastic surgery, therefore is not covered by medical insurance. However, Dr. Yates understands the important investment in your future, life, and self-confidence and offers great financing options, from interest-free financing to longer term options. You can call their office to see if you qualify for a financing option.

I have personally seen some of the results in person – and YES, it looks totally natural!

When hair transplantation is done correctly by a proficient surgeon, the results look so natural that nobody would know you had a procedure. To achieve the best, natural, and attractive results, you need a meticulous surgeon with proven results. Dr. Yates prefers the advanced follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure that involves harvesting individual follicles for the best results.

Chicago Dining Out For Life April 30th

dining out for life chicago

Local Chicago nonprofit, EdgeAlliance, has this month announced more than 70 restaurants to participate in city-wide event, Dining Out for Life, to benefit and geared towards improving the lives of homeless persons living with AIDS.

In its 22nd year, Dining Out for Life brings restaurants and diners across the city together to rally around a pressing cause for Chicago; homelessness. Be part of a movement where millions of people across 60 cities come-out to dine-out on April 30th, “Dining Out for Life”, a campaign that annually raises $4 million in support of those impacted by HIV/AIDS.

EdgeAlliance is doing their part in Chicago by connecting more than 12,000 people and 115 community partners with over 80 restaurants in support of our mission of providing quality and affordable housing to those who are most in need.

Rick Roman, co-owner of The Signature Room at the 95th, and Honorary Chair of Dining Out for Life/Chicago 2015, reaffirmed that local restaurants have always been fully supportive of HIV/AIDS research and programming in this city. “We at The Signature Room at the 95th welcome the opportunity to show support for EdgeAlliance and their Dining Out for Life campaign by being a participating restaurant. Our shared support with residents of Chicago – to uphold the traditions of good taste and community engagement – makes this venture a natural fit,” he said. Participating restaurants around Chicago will donate a portion of their proceeds to EdgeAlliance, allowing its residents to sustain healthy lives through affordable housing and programming. Chicago is one of 60 cities across the United States and Canada participating in the event, making Dining Out for Life the single largest HIV/AIDS benefit in the country!

Actress and advocate Pam Grier joined Dining Out For Life as co-spokesperson (with Food Network host Ted Allen) to help raise support. “There is a resurgence of HIV among youth, gay men, women and ethnic minorities due to lack of education and the misperception that the epidemic is over and curable. Awareness and funds are declining – but you can help. Dine out on Thursday, April 24th for the most satisfying meal you’ll have all year.”

For more information on Dining Out for Life, please contact Joey Wasserman, Campaign Development Manager at 202-765-7442 or Jwasserman@edgealliance.org. Visit the official Dining Out for Life website at www.diningoutforlife.com/chicago for full list of participating restaurants.

Chicago Soap Makers Expanding

real soaps chicago

Chicago soapmakers Real. Soaps is expanding into a studio to increase production and begin teaching classes on soap making and natural products.  But they need your help.

Shamus McClain started Real. Soaps because many “soaps” are not actually soap; they’re detergent, and the chemicals in them make them far less than natural – some are potentially dangerous.  Sadly, it is this way with a lot of products, so I learned how to make them myself with REAL ingredients.   I am self taught and since the beginning have been focused on taking what I have learned and sharing it with people so they can make smarter choices about the products they use.

What started as handmade, small-batch soap has grown over the past 3 years.  I now have an ever-expanding line of all natural products.  I continue to make every product in small batches with intention & care and with my own two hands.   Real. Soaps has gained popularity through word of mouth, friends and family, Etsy, working with local shops, farmer’s markets, craft fairs and pop-up shops.  I now stock over 20 stores here in Chicago and several out of state.

“Through 4 apartments I have been growing this company – and now Real. Soaps finally has a space to call its own!   I have been offered an opportunity to grow my business in the form of my own work space.  I will use this space to increase my own production and continue spreading the natural/green beauty message by teaching classes on how to make similar products on your own!  As a maker, this will be my work space and a retail space for my product. As a teacher, I will share my knowledge with my community. ”

SUPER JOCKS  in  SUPER  JOCKS!

Sunday  May 10th  @  Hydrate.

The FABULOUS BIANCA DEL RIO will be on hand to host the First Annual Crochet Empire Jockstrap Fashion Show!

Andy Boyer of Chicago founded The Crochet Empire after making a gag gift for his boyfriend. Little did he know that this gag would be taken very seriously and explode. He took up crochet after wanting to make a connection back to previous generations in his family.

Badass handmade items for men.

nick dicristini jock strap crochet

Andy started crochet as a hobby because both of his grandmothers worked in the craft. He wanted to feet a connection to the generations that came before him. Then  a jockstrap for his boyfriend was LOVED by friends and EVERYONE wanted one!  A Kickstarter  program was launched and Crochet Empire was born.

“At The Crochet Empire we pride ourselves on custom orders and designs. Solids, stripes, checks, college logos or whatever. If you can think it up, I bet we can come up with a way to make it. Most jocks hold too tightly or don’t cover enough ground, but I’ve now learned about the power of crochet! We use a very thin yarn, which makes them super comfortable.”

Alex  from UNB  did a video review HERE. He emphasizes the best part of these, is they gently hold and cup you, unlike most jockstraps.

They also offer sleek, hand made bow ties that are extremely fashionable and easy to wear. Each one is adjustable to fit your neck size and are made out of materials that will not irritate you skin. They hold their shape and will not stretch.
There are lots of color and custom options.
