Crew Bar + Grill Hosts Proud to run Race benefit April 10th

Crew Bar + Grill,
Chicago’s award winning gay sports bar, will host a benefit for the 30th Annual Proud to Run Race on Sunday, April 10th, from 1pm to 4pm.

The Proud to Run Race celebrates gay and lesbian pride and is held on the same weekend in June as the Chicago Gay Pride Parade. This year’s race will be Saturday, June 25th.

For a $20 donation, attendees to the benefit at Crew will take part in an all you can drink beer bust and raffle for various prizes, including a Blu-Ray DVD player and two pairs of tickets to an upcoming Chicago Cubs game.

“One of the things that attracted us to the Proud to Run event is that it’s not just a race. It’s also a fundraiser to benefit a couple of charities in the Chicago Area,” said Crew co-owner Steve Milford. This year Proud to run will benefit Pride Youth Services, a North Shore Health Service program for LGBT youth, and the Gerber/Hart Library, a non-profit library focused on Chicago LGBT history and archival materials.  “We love doing these kinds of charitable events that benefit the community, and this particular event is also a sporting event, which is right up our alley,” added Mr. Milford.

Last year, the race had over 1,100 participants, and organizers hope to boost attendance by almost 20% to 1,300. Holding events and benefits, like the April 10th beer bust at Crew is one way the organizers hope to reach out to more people in the community. “I’ve run the Proud to Run race every year since I moved to Chicago almost a decade ago. It’s a great way to kick off Pride weekend with friends,” said Dave Davila, a manager at Crew Bar + Grill.  “I hope this year to get some more of my co-workers running with me.”

Crew Bar + Grill, located at the intersection of Broadway and Lawrence, is Chicago’s premiere gay sports bar.  In 2010, Mike Sullivan and Mark Robertson joined the business as co-owners alongside Steve Milford and Brian Wells. Now well into its sixth year, Crew has become a fixture of the Uptown entertainment district with a mix of big games on over 20 HD, flat screen televisions and great food and drinks.

Subtle herb infusions perfect for exotic vodka martinis are obtainable with just a sprig or two of rosemary or basil. Cazwell and Amanda Lepore! Saturday Feb. 12th at Hydrate

Under The Big Red Top
comes to Chicago!

The queen and king of New Yorks  nightlife scene arrive in Chicago, this weekend!

Amanda Lepore has always been the bearer of curiosities, and it’s commonly known that her parties come hand-in-hand with brusque displays of exhibitionism: all skin and sparkle, and anything less would be an insult.

Cazwell. What can we say?

Few new artists embody the spirit of downtown NYC more completely than Cazwell. A leading figure in the renaissance of New York City nightlife that has taken place over the last five years, Cazwell’s music—a ridiculously fun mix of electrified dance music and old school hip hop—is the perfect example of the new spirit of pop music. Says Caz, “When people ask me how to describe my style sometimes I say ‘Just imagine if Biggie Smalls ate Donna Summer for breakfast.’”

Hydrate and Jagermeister is proud to present …..AMANDA LEPORE AND CAZWELL, Saturday, February 12th!!!!  Cazwell will be live at 10pm.  and he will spin the night away!  Amanda performs at Midnight.  Cazwell will be spinning all night long for you until 5am!

These 2 always put on an excellent show. And these two have been collaborating for years!

Cazwell is  executive producer, brainchild and songwriter behind Amanda Lepore’s upcoming debut album “I…Amanda Lepore” also due this Spring.

The album features such Caz-penned Lepore classics as “Champagne,” “My Hair Looks Fierce,” (which has already been tapped for a television theme song!) and the rambunctious pop punk ode to love “Cotton Candy.” Caz also guest stars in the “Cotton Candy” music video directed by Bec Stupak which will be Amanda’s premiere release for her album!

About being Sonny to a traninternational Cher, Caz says, “I love working on the Amanda record because she’s so interesting and has had such a crazy life. She has a very different point of view. I think that is makeup for an amazing album. I think we definitely achieved that with ‘I…Amanda Lepore’”

CREW’S Chill Contest Raises $1050 for Food Pantry

Crew Bar + Grill
held its 5th Annual Charity
Chili Contest this past weekend, and raised $1050 for the Edgewater based non-profit, Care for Real.  Organized by the Edgewater Community Council, Care for Real is a volunteer operated food pantry and social services group supported by donations from the community. The annual chili contest lets patrons sample different chili recipes for a $10.00 donation.

Wayne Johnson, food and lifestyle reporter for NBC Chicago, hosted the event which featured nine contestants with a wide range of chili flavors and styles. The winning chili was submitted by local author of The Screwed Up Life of Charlie the Second, Drew Ferguson, who graciously donated his $100 prize to the Care for Real food pantry.

Crew’s contest also features a design and presentation award, named for out lifestyle designer Christopher Lowell. This year’s entries included a cowboy themed setup, a Glee parody, and a Chicago style stuffed ballot box theme. The Lowell Award winner was Dawn DeGroot with a Las Vegas Casino table theme, complete with a light up Welcome To Las Vegas sign, tuxedo coat and tie.

“We are so thrilled with the outcome of the Charity Chili Cook Off,” Steve Milford, co-owner of Crew Bar + Grill, said, “Before the contest, I said I’d be happy if we raised just a little bit more than 2010’s $540, but our customers really came out and supported the event and the Care for Real pantry .  At the end of the day, we doubled the amount of money raised from the previous year.” Crew co-owner, Brian Wells added, “Care for Real has been in the neighborhood doing good work for many years, but they told us that this January was one of their busiest on record. These are tough economic times, and I’m so thankful for the generosity of our customers. They never cease to amaze me.”

Crew Bar + Grill , located at 4804 N Broadway , Chicago, IL   60640 (Broadway and Lawrence),  is Chicago’s premiere, award winning gay sports bar.  In 2010, Mike Sullivan and Mark Robertson joined the business as co-owners alongside Steve Milford and Brian Wells. Best New Brunch in Boystown – EVERYDAY at Cocktail

Once known for Pink Pussys,
Dreamsicles, go-go gods and
$1 drinks on Sundays,
now Cocktail  is  becoming known
for the best DAILY Brunch in Boystown.

This is NOT bar food, mind you. It’s American Seasonal, good quality foods and flavors. The menu serves brunch, bites, salads and sandwiches daily, everyday, 11am-10pm, with Brunch everyday 11am-4pm.

Erin Baker, their food director says,”I really wanted to stay away from typical bar food and fried foods. I insisted we do not have a fryer in the kitchen! Instead things are baked, roasted, toasted and grilled. One of our cooks makes an amazing Southern Fried Chicken, that is NOT fried!”

While the menu stays basically the same, the preparations will vary. For instance Eggs Benedict will frequently change as does the Waffle stylings.

One thing that will probably never change is the Mango Chutney Chicken Salad.  A delicious mix of Chicken, mango chutney, mayo, bacon, avocado, roasted almonds, scallions and fantastically seasoned pita chips!  It is quite amazing!

Owner Geno Zaharakis says “I love to cook! And I found this recipe years ago in a NorthShore Cookbook. And over the years have tinkered and played with it. People LOVE IT!”

And he added, “While the menu stays basically the same,  we make changes on some of the preparations and will offer specials. Last week we did a Southern flare theme with corn bread, grits and collard greens and people loved it.

And in the coming months, they are launching a lot of theme brunches and special events. And of course, next April, the outdoor patio will return. But we have also been booking a lot of special parties in the new back bar. And Erin helps work on special menu’s for the guests.”

Sunday December 5th
, hostess Phyllis launches
First Sundays Brunch

Sunday December 12th, Red Dress Party Chicago hosts
a launch party for their upcoming April 2011  event.

Sunday December 19th, is the Howard Brown Benefit Brunch. $25 prix fixe brunch with proceeds going to Howard Brown.

(also on Monday December 6th –  Cocktail will donate all the proceeds , all day to Howard Brown! PLUS  get HALF-OFF  that  day!!)

In January, longtime favorite bartender Val will kick off Opera Brunches on January 9th and Geno said he is planning on Gospel Brunches, the third Sunday of each month, starting in January. Even though all of these brunch special events take place on Sundays, I just love the fact they have brunch available  EVERY  DAY of the week!

Most of the food items run $7-$12. So it’s very affordable and the portions are nice.

Insider tips!
-On Tuesdays check out their  $2  TACOS!

D.S. Tequila Company – A Tex-and-Mex bar and eatery from the owners of Minibar, in Boystown Chicago

D.S. Tequila Company  is the home of D.S. Company brand tequila.  This flagship store-resturant-bar in Chicago at 3352 N. Halsted,  is the first location of its kind to incorporate retail tequila with a full dining and party experience.

Delicious burgers, tacos and D.S. Company tequilas are the real deal.  The burgers are made with a half pound of Allen Bros. 100% Prime Beef.  Allen Bros supply other top restaurants like Gene & Georgetti and Lawry’s.  Choose from the Classic Burger with applewood smoked bacon, white cheddar and tequila grilled tomotoes or maybe the Buffalo Blue Cheese with jalapeno bacon, blue cheese, guacamole and a special DS Tequila original buffalo tomotoe sauce.

The  tortillas are made fresh, by hand, daily in their kitchen.  Tasty tacos include Crispy Fried Chicken (for those NOT watching their weight!), Tequila Grilled Shrimp and my favorite, BBQ Pulled Pork. Margaritas are made with 100% Agave Tequila and real lime juice with no added sugars.

There are also some starters worth mentioning. Fresh Guacamole, Loaded Fries, and the knock your socks off XXX Jalapeno Poppers!  If you save any room for desert, they offer a S’Mores Sunday and delicious cupcakes like Tres Leches and Ancho Chocolate Brownie.  Prices here are reasonable.  Burgers are $8.49. Tacos are $2.69.

More about their signature tequila…

D.S. Tequila is serious tequila.  Unlike some of the other “premium” tequila producers, their  Weber Blue Agave plants are grown for eight years with no artificial accelerants to speed their production.  The sugars from blue agave plants that are allowed to develop naturally.  This produces a taste so smooth and rich, you won’t believe its tequila.

D.S. Company Tequila should hit store shelves in about 6 months.  For the time being, they  have selected Don Modesto, their sister brand of tequila, to carry at their retail store/bar & restaurant.  Don Modesto grows within the same plantation as D.S. Company tequila.  Both products are  100% organic.  With a taste profile similar to D.S. Company tequila,  Don Modesto is the best representation of their product to carry at D.S. Tequila Company.  Read more about their Tequilas online .

Cocktail and the gardens Bring More Swank to Boystown and Halsted

 The recently rehabbed Cocktail
is the original swanky chill lounge of Halsted in Boystown. It is one of the most inviting  bars in Lakeview, appealing to a broad-based clientele that is short on attitude and long on fun.

Its two attractive bars (cocktail & new garden bar) feature chic black crystal chandeliers, gorgeous onyx-lit bar tops (imported from Greece) and a swank sidewalk café, known as the gardens. Cocktail is the perfect place to sip libations, enjoy great food and converse with friends, both old and new. –  Plus, new room is great for private parties!

The city dragged their feet in signing off on final approval and permits. So unless we get an Indian Summer, you’ll have to wait to enjoy the gardens @ cocktail…a lush  1,192 square foot sidewalk cafe is a breathtaking addition to the corner of Halsted and Roscoe.

the gardens will be open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (weather permitting) until  November 1st 2010, and will re-open in the spring of 2011.

The gardens are lined with lush green box hedge, with Jasper Morrison “Air Chair” furnishings from Italy, and plenty of golden shaded seating under the posh cover of our distinctive Vueve Cliquot umbrellas. It feels like a swank New York hotspot!

FOOD, FOOD, FOOD!
  ALWAYS AVAILABLE!

Cocktail serves up their new menu with all the style you’ve come to expect! The new expansion brings a whole new Cocktail, now serving brunch from 11a-4p daily, and the  full menu daily till 10pm.

Erin Baker is the food director and events coordinator. I HIGHLY recommend the Artichoke Terrine! Very Delicious! And for brunch I have tried the Breakfast Tacos and the Benedict. Bot very good. The table next to me was eating BBQ Chicken wrap and gave it high props.

When the lights go down, the scene gets a bit more lively thanks in large part to a stage area that hosts the “Spank Go Go Boys” five nights a week.

Dubbed the “home of house music on Halsted Street”, Cocktail boasts an impressive line-up of resident DJs that includes Michael Serafini, Tracy Tobey, Freddie Bain, Carla Starla, Timmy Loop, DJ Dhanna, Miss Michaela, and Pete Augusta.

Coming soon, Psycho Bitch and Heather Doble. Mixing the latest dance grooves from Chicago and around the world as well as presenting some of the hottest dancers in the city, Cocktail consistently serves up a fun atmosphere with an amazingly diverse crowd.

Whether you want a Pink Pussy or a Salty Dog – this is the spot to check out. Delicious music, go-go boys, and now food!

Kimberly is excited to a show for gay fans at ROSCOES!

“I do a lot of Gay Pride events during the summer, from like June to August. Hands down, I know those events are going to be my best events because the energy in the gay clubs or at the gay events is just out of control. They love me and they let it be known and it feels really good. Anytime I’m stuck in a rut, I’m like I need to do a gay club so I can get my morale boosted. When I walk off the stage from doing a show at a gay event, I just feel like I’ve conquered the world. It’s always a party and it’s always about the music, and I really do enjoy that. It’s not to say that my other audiences aren’t great but it’s hit and miss, when you go and just do a concert or something like that you never know what you’re going to get.”

CREW BAR + GRILL CELEBRATES 6 YEARS September 7th

On Tuesday, September 7th,
after numerous Super Bowls, World Series, and Stanley Cups, Crew Bar Grill , Chicago’s original gay sports bar, will celebrate a special event of its own: six years of business in the Uptown neighborhood. The party will feature a complimentary taco and nacho bar, plus drink specials on favorites like sangria and Beergarita, Crew’s original tequila and beer concoction.

Faced with tough economic times, Steve Milford and Brian Wells, Crew’s original owners, teamed up with two new partners in 2010, Mike Sullivan and Mark Robertson. Working together, the new business team oversaw a remodel of the bar, which included 20 high-definition flat screen TVs, a massive 63” flat screen, new tables and chairs, plus a revamped food and drink menu. “Mike and Mark have been a welcome addition to Crew, bringing a different set of skills and a fresh perspective. It’s been a great partnership,” says Steve Milford.

Crew was the first new business in several years to take a chance on the 4800 block of Uptown in the historic entertainment district.  “The talk of great things happening has gone on for years around here, and we feel like we were a positive part of starting to make that happen,” says owner Brian Wells.  Crew was named one of the Top 100 Bars by Chicago magazine and has won numerous other awards from a diverse range of media outlets, including Fox Morning News Viewers, Metromix, Chicago Free Press, Chicago “Hearts” Trivia, Competition Magazine, New City and more.
