“We used to do brunch a long time ago and stopped. But recently Edward and Ramesh decided to bring brunch back and I host every Sunday! It’s a DIVA-LICIOUS Brunch, every Sunday, 11am-3pm. !”

You can choose the 2-course $25 gourmet brunch which includes free flowing Bloody Marys and Mimosa’s or Select a delicious Big Brunch item and get unlimited Bloody Marys or Mimosa’s for just $10 more.
Everything here is BIG – so come hungry! Big Fat Greek Wedding ($12) is an Omelette with feta cheese, spinach and grilled chicken. BestGay Chicago Recommends ZED451 – Best Gourmet Dinner Experience in Downtown Chicago
Last week we told you about an amazing wine tasting experience we enjoyed downtown at ZED451.
We had to get back there for dinner! So a few nights ago we did just that.
WOW! What amazing food and what a fantastic dining experience! ZED 451, while based on the concept of the Brazilian Steak Houses, takes dining to a new level. They pay the utmost attention to their ever changing menu’s fresh and seasonal food flavors and ingredients, as well as customer care and comfort. When dining at ZED451, expect a relaxed atmosphere where you are not rushed through your meal at all, matter of fact, quite the opposite. This restaurant is not concerned about how many times it can turn a table in an evening. They are concerned, however, that you stay and have an amazingly good time! What other restaurant do you know of that does that?! And if you make arrangements ahead of time, ZED451 will even drive to your Chicago location and pick you up in their private shuttle! And take you to your final destination when you are finished!
ZED451 started right here in Chicago two years ago. They opened in the suburbs first but the concept was not what suburbanites were looking for. So they brought the concept to downtown Chicago and the urban foodies LOVE IT! They have since opened in Boca Raton and are preparing a site in Boston for later this year.
ZED451 is a revolutionary restaurant concept featuring original cuisine and delivery, service intelligence and unprecedented design. The name, ZED451, is simply the end and the beginning. ZED, the last letter of the British alphabet, represents the culmination of all our restaurant experiences (the end) and 451, the degrees Fahrenheit that fire starts, represents the beginning.
Interior designer Julia Roth and Architect Chris Smith from CMS Design in New York took the original restaurant space which is over 125 years old (and actually still has a speakeasy window in it!), and kept much of the original steel and brick to keep an old, rustic Chicago look. Natural elements and lots of wood were used throughout the restaurant to provide a rich, organic, comfortable feel. From the design of the floors to the design of the menus, no detail has went overlooked. Soaring ceilings, dark wooden floors, glass walls and an eclectic mix of music give ZED451 a relaxing lounge feel. Even the restrooms have state-of-the-art Dyson bladeless super-fast hand dryers!
Before the meal experience even starts, you may want to try a seasonal sangria or mojito on the secluded rooftop when open! Or maybe a wine flight at the wine bar. Every juice used is fresh squeezed. If you order a drink “up”, expect to get freshly chipped, triple-filtered ice in your drink. House-Infused Spirits are available. Every detail is thought about here. Take your time and savor the comfortable surroundings! It’s all about dining in the same comfort you feel in a friend’s home. But with the full service, culinary offerings and ambiance of a fine dining restaurant.
THE CONCEPT is all about FRESH and SEASONAL. $44 for a full dinner. At the fresh harvest tables you find things like seasonal soups, well over 15 composed salads like Strawberry Rhubarb and Spinach Salad, Roasted Pineapple “Madagascar” with Orange Yogurt Dressing, and Sautéed Wild Mushrooms with Feta Dressing.
Plus an assortment of hummus,cured meats, marinated vegetables, olives, peppers, pepperoni, prosciutto, various artisan cheeses and breads. EVERYTHING is hand picked and hand selected by the staff. And it changes all the time. Feel free to graze and try as much as you want…but don’t forget, dinner is still to come!
Once you are ready to begin your main courses, the chefs are alerted and start to bring you their nightly offerings. Modern upscale grilling of fire grilled steaks, ribs, poultry, seafoods, wild game, served along your choice of comfort foods like smoked gouda mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, roasted corn with bacon or cheddar jalapeno potatoes.
Imagine being on the set of the Food Network and you want to try EVERYTHING! Everything smells and looks amazing. So just take a taste, a bite of everything, so that you don’t find yourself overeating and can taste as many flavors as possible~then go back for more of your personal favorites!
Unlike many Brazilian steak houses, it’s not all about the meat at ZED451. There are plenty of seafoods and other things to try as well. The evening we were dining, there was a delicious salmon entrée and a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth Mahi-Mahi dish.
You MUST save room for dessert. FAMOUS for their Butterscotch Bread Pudding and S’mores Pie. WOW! Not to mention Chocolate Strawberry Soufflé Cake and Vanilla Malted Creme Brulee’.
Tired of the same old brunch with Omelette’s and Eggs Benedict? This is the BEST BRUNCH IN CHICAGO and only $24! In typical Z fashion, a lavish gourmet brunch is presented every Sunday. Lavish abundance.
Chefs offer a variety of traditional and exotic dishes tableside while the Harvest Tables are transformed into a sea of fresh fruits, seasonal desserts and specialty items. Corned Beef Hash and Spinach and Egg, Italian Panettone French Toast with lemon curd, vanilla whipped cream and Vermont maple syrup. And of course, fresh fired meats and delicious fish. Their Maple Cajun Bacon is THE BEST!
This will be a fabulous place to spend Easter Sunday! And what about Mothers Day May 9th. MOM’s DINE FREE! That’s right! ZED451 believes mom should be treated like a queen and therefore should not have to pay on her special day!
This restaurant has it all. Whether you want to dine alone as a party of 1 or bring a group of 101, the restaurant has many floor plans and options for everyone to create the most memorable gourmet dining experience.
Pre-theatre drinks and snacks (like amazing $6 beer batter pearl onions and Lumpy Crabmeat Cajun sliders you won’t believe!); Rooftop cocktails; Romantic dinner for 2; After-Work networking event for 20; Sunday Wedding for 100. Tell them what you want and they will deliver. EVEN YOU! I mentioned earlier, call ahead and they will even pick up and deliver you! How is that for service?
INSIDERS NOTE: For those foodies who want to be close to the grilling action, there is a chefs seating area / counter in the grilling area that accommodates about 8 people. Reserve ahead if you wish to sit there.

The Best of Gay Chicago
Best Gay Chicago Best Wine Tasting Experience in the City!
Last week a dear friend calls us and asks if we want to “come over to his place for a wine tasting experience?”
Sure! We love wine, why not?! There was three of us, plus our friend, who was playing host. We all get to his house at a designated time and I don’t see any wine! He said “Don’t take off your coat, we’re taking right off.”
What the heck? We all go down his lobby and there is cute little shuttle bus waiting for us! We’re asking all kinds of questions and he is stiff-lipped. “It’s a surprise,” he says!
We get on Lake Shore Drive and leave Boystown and end up downtown at Clark and Superior in front of ZED 451! I had never been there, but heard it was quite fabulous!
So we go inside and check our coats and the walk us into this glass enclosed wine room. 4 bottles of wine are set out with a beautiful tray of cheeses and crackers. Patrick, one of the chef’s comes in to greet us. He explains our four different wines. Then he gives these amazing description and stories about the cheeses. Every cheese was selected for a reason to not only pair with the wine, but the cheese itself was selected for the restaurant based on taste and quality. It was very clear, a LOT OF THOUGHT went into this restaurant.
So after the chef was done, he leaves the room and we all sample wines and cheeses and chat about things, just as if you were at home in someone’s living room! It was just delightful! It was laid back, it was relaxing and just an amazing time. We were there about 90 minutes.
A private wine and cheese pairing in the wine room can be reserved at any time. ZED 451 can set up a four or five flight wine and cheese pairing for guests, or guests are welcome to select their own bottles of wine from the extensive international wine list. With either arrangement, the only cost to guests is for the bottles of wine they drink. All of the cheese, fruit and nut pairings are complementary as part of the “wine room experience”. That means guests can choose to open a $32 bottle of wine or a $300 bottle of wine and get the same personal custom experience! PLUS, the restaurant will gladly shuttle you down to the restaurant and back home on the Zed 451 complimentary shuttle. Even if you want to have dinner with them! Just plan and call ahead and save $40 in cab fares!
4 bottles of wine at ZED 451: $169.00
Complimentary cheese pairings: FREE
Complimentary shuttle service: FREE

El Mariachi – Biggest Tequila Bar, Best Guacomole and Freshest Mexican Food in Boystown Lakeview Chicago
Established in 1996,
a father and his 2 sons opened a small 10-table restaurant in the Boystown/East Lakeview community. El Mariachi has gradually grown over the years by following a strict policy of only serving top quality, authentic dishes and margaritas. The restaurant steadily grew in popularity with the support of loyal patrons who loved the families recipes of authentic food.
At the newest location, El Mariachi Tequila Bar & Grill, they offer a much bigger menu, fresh tableside guacamole that is made to order and an extensive selection of over 175 tequilas! (all 100% Blue Agave). This makes it the biggest tequila bar in Chicago!
DID YOU KNOW? There are two basic categories of tequila: mixtos and 100% agave. Mixtos use no less than 51% agave, with other sugars making up the remainder.
When tequila is produced it can go thru many different stages and techniques, just like wines. Some distilleries cook mature agave in huge stone ovens, some may go through steam ovens, and some are allowed to ferment in wood tanks or stainless steel barrels. Each technique can produce different flavors.
Tequila is usually bottled in one of five categories:
- Blanco (“white”) or plata (“silver”): white spirit, un-aged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in stainless steel or neutral oak barrels;
- Joven (“young”) or oro (“gold”): is the result of blending Silver Tequila with Reposado and/or Añejo and/or extra Añejo Tequila;
- Reposado (“rested”): aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels;
- Añejo (“aged” or “vintage”): aged a minimum of one year, but less than three years in oak barrels;
- Extra Añejo (“extra aged” or “ultra aged”): aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels.
If you’re lucky, on some evenings they pass around samplings to customers. Ask about some “sipping” tequila at the bar, and the staff will quickly educate you and even provide “flights” of tequila to show you the differences between the various grades and brands. A nice way to start off an evening. And of course the selection of Margarita styles and options is huge!
From the start, from the airy crisp fresh home-made tortilla chips to the 2 fresh flavors of salsa, the quality here is evident.
I have dined here probably a dozen times or more since this newest location opened. The food is always good and hot, presented in an appealing way, and most times comes up in a timely manner.
When I dine out, I like to split an entrée and have room to try other things as well. El Mariachi has some great starters that should not be missed. They offer one of the best black bean soups I have ever had and a delicious chipotle and tomato based tortilla soup, which is topped off with avocado and sour cream.
A nice appetizer I enjoy in the summer is their traditional shrimp ceviche. And in the winter I love their Queso Fundido. It is one of the best I have ever had. Just the right texture and not too greasy or oily. They use a very high-quality cheese.
Queso Fundido is billed as a “cheese fondue”. And I think many diners order this dish at Mexican restaurants expecting a warm semi-liquid sauce in a pot, to dip in. But it’s not. It’s more a cheese spread of sorts. It’s melted cheese, not a cheese sauce. It traditionally comes with chorizo sausage added, I like mine plain, but I have also ordered it with some chopped shrimp or chopped chicken added to it. And it is served with some flour or corn tortillas to make a little sandwich appetizer or I just like to scoop it onto their delicious chips and top it off with a dab of their salsa!
If you love guacamole, you have to get it here and they make it to order tableside. It’s ALWAYS good. Never thinned down like some restaurants will blend in sour cream. Just fresh, pure, quality ingredients. Just recently a new chef came onboard and suggested they add just a few drops of avocado oil to the guacamole which gives it a nice smooth texture and finish.
Entree’s range from a big assortment of carnes/meats, mariscos/seafood and pollo/chicken dishes. And all of the traditional Mexican favorites are here as well; Burritos, Flautas, Fajitas, Enchiladas, Tacos and a variety of combinations. People will tell me they don’t like Mexican food – I bring them here and they love it. There is something for everyone. Most of food is traditional Mexican but many come with a fresh approach. A variety of sides include Lime Rice and Mexican Corn. There are four Vegetarian dishes as well and many of the traditional fare can be made vegetarian.
The father here created a topping of specialty seasoned shrimp and sauce which he calls “Costena“. And it is available on the grilled steak, on the chicken breasts, or on the catfish, which I am told is extremely popular. I LOVE IT on the chicken!
I think most all of the entree’s here are generous portions and filling and it’s very easy to split an appetizer, share an entree and save room for a dessert. YOU WILL BE FULL!
Fresh made dessert includes traditional Flan (baked custard with light carmel sauce), Banana’s Flambéed with Tequila, melt-in-your-mouth Margarita Cheesecake, traditional Sopapillas (fried dough with cinnamon, honey and ice cream) and for the chocolate lover, a moist and rich flourless chocolate cake made with nuts and cherries and some gran marnier! See why I said you need to save some room for dessert?! Most people over eat at their meal and leave no room, and a taste of something sweet with a dash of Mexican coffee, is the perfect finish.
The back garden patio is fantastic in the summer. Unlike so many patios here in Chicago, you are shielded from the noisy street and the busy buses. Secluded with sunlight or shady spots, whatever you want…all tucked into a secret little garden in the back. Summertime heaven. The patio is not open real late at night, out of respect for the neighbors.
Also this summer, the restaurant will be offering some unique spaces on the property which will be available for rent for private parties and events. Then in the fall, the family hope to unveil their newest property; at 3445 Broadway (right by the original location 3420) in the old Triangle Photo Building will be home to their new (yet unnamed) traditional Steakhouse with Mexican flair!

Adrian, one of the two brothers who helps run the restaurant has been working with his father since the age of 11! He prides himself on quality management. “We pride ourselves on selecting quality ingredients and not skimping to save a few pennies, like some restaurants might do. And we watch the restaurant very closey and listen to what the customers tell us for feedback. We run reports to see what sells best and we change the menu around as needed. We are going to launch another new menu any day now!”

- Blanco (“white”) or plata (“silver”): white spirit, un-aged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in stainless steel or neutral oak barrels;

Two of the Best Bakeries in the Chicagoland Area
For New Years Eve, we attended a party at a friends house in Boystown. We were treated to delcious desserts from his Polish friend and pastry chef Anna Majewski, from Sugar Hills Bakery. Cookies that were delicious, European pastries to die for and a cake that was out of this world!
The cake was NUTCRACKER. It was done in traditional European old-world-style. A combination of walnut cake filled with mocha kahlua and chocolate vodka REAL buttercreams, raisins and nuts! WOW! It was heaven!
From specialty and wedding cakes (yes they do very nice gay wedding cakes!) to elegant pastries and delectable cookies, this bakery has it all. Delicious goods made completely from scratch from only the highest quality ingredients with great attention to detail. “Because we are small we have complete quality control,” explained Anna. “I use only the best and finest ingredients. If I wouldn’t put it in my mouth – I won’t make it.”
Anna is a self-taught pastry chef spending most of her life working for various bakers and pastry shops. With her European background and pastry knowledge, she has a very strong decorating and design sense, as well as a real knack for pairings of flavors as well as delicious and unique combinations.
“Our options of flavors and fillings can be anything you like,” she explains. “From very simple like vanilla or more complex, such as Kahlua or orange flavored with Grand Marnier. You can choose anything, but I will draw the line with weird combinations. We’re not going to put together mismatched flavors, such as lemon and mocha. That’s not a good combination.”
Cake choices range from vanilla and chocolate to red velvet and lemon. Mouth watering fillings that like chocolate and vodka, mint white chocolate, mocha and Kahlua. Nearly 2 dozen different flavored mousses. And specialty cakes ranging from Raspberry Snow, Double Chocolate Passion and Straciatella, just to name a few!
Sugar Hills Bakery offers a daily selection of European style pastries and baked goods at their shop. Fruit tarts, napoleons, éclairs, tiramisu slices, pecan slices, lemon bars, brownies, apple and cherry slices, raspberry tarts, opera cake slices, French macaroons with fresh raspberries, cheesecake slices, chocolate rum slices, Italian butter cookies and cut out sugar cookies. But if you can’t make it to the shop, they will arrange delivery.
Sugar Hills Bakery has been in business since 2006 in Algonquin. Over 10 years of experience and offer unparalleled expertise. Count on them for upscale cakes and pastries, great catering services, and excellent attentive customer care. Customized bakery creations from shaped, iced sugar cookies to formal cakes, most designs can be created for any occasion with at least five days notice.
Custom orders are welcomed and on request, they will make special items that are a little gay & risque’ !
You will not find better baked goods in the entire Chicago area!

Windy City Gyros…Best Gyros? Worst Homophobic Anti-Gay Place to Eat in Chicago
However, from time to time, we will also point out the WORST, so that you can avoid these places.
Windy City Gyros
3932 N Broadway St
I have hated this place for a number of years, but after a night of drinking, my partner will sometimes crave a greasy lamb Gyros sandwich! And this dinneresque place is just on the edge of Boystown, and a popular late night spot to grab a quick bite.
However, on every single occassion we have been here, the staff and management are SO HOMOPHOBIC and ANTI-GAY, everytime we leave, I say I am not coming back!
It had been about a year, since our last visit. And last night was the final straw. The place hasn’t changed! The 2 guys behind the counter were speaking in their native tongue but I did hear HOMOs and they were laughing. The staff here is always rude and I refuse to ever go back here again.
We urge you – DO NOT SPEND YOUR GAY DOLLARS HERE!
