Owner Arnsdorff, with friend and Marketing Director Nick Kuttin ( aka Nikutn ) have created something very special here.

“I’ve been an antique collector pretty much my whole life and I’ve always had a thing for archaic technology and also for music and really started getting back into vinyl the last few years,” said Arnsdorff. “I love the sound, especially of the older systems. The things they’re making today, there are some you can find that are high-end audiophile, but most of it’s kind of pedestrian. I’ve enjoyed finding things, fixing them up, refurbishing them.” – (Taken from Windy City interview  HERE).

Chicago LGBTQ Services Directory Now Live!

New Chicagoland LGBTQ Services Directory launched
First comprehensive, searchable website of resources for LGBTQ people
 
CHICAGO (March 17, 2014) — Seeking a support group for gay fathers near Jefferson Park? In need of trans-friendly shelter housing for a homeless client in Pilsen, or legal advocacy for a lesbian friend who has suffered from violence?
 
The Chicagoland LGBTQ Services Directory at www.chicagolgbtservices.org launched on March 4th as the first comprehensive, searchable website of such resources for LGBTQ people in Chicago and its near suburbs. The directory was created and is maintained by the LGBTQ Mental Health and Inclusion Center at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. The Center serves to educate and train culturally competent practitioners in social justice and service delivery for gender and sexual minorities.
 
The ever-growing directory launches with more than 250 services specific to LGBTQ people, from basic needs such as employment and shelter to social resources, mental health treatment and legal support provided by more than 130 agencies.
 
For each service listed, the directory provides a provider name and address, service description, telephone number, email, handicapped accessibility, service hours and direct link to provider’s website, where available. Service providers can use the site to directly request that their resources be considered for directory inclusion.
 
“The concept for this searchable online website came from the constant struggle of finding up-to-date resources for LGBTQ clients in my clinical care,” said Kevin Osten-Garner, Psy.D., Director of the Adler School’s LGBTQ Mental Health and Inclusion Center and a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in work with LGBTQ issues, several mental illness and chemical/behavioral addictions. 
 
Over the last year, Osten-Garner led colleagues and students at the Adler School investing hundreds of hours researching and reaching out to Chicago-area agencies to document, verify and enter resources dedicated to LGBTQ people for the online directory.
 
The Chicagoland LGBTQ Services Directory lists LGBTQ-competent services in the areas of:
 
·         Advocacy
·         Basic needs: career and employment, case management, education, food, homeless services, housing
·         Communities: differently-abled, faith-based, military, parenting and family, professional groups
·         Health: prevention and wellness, primary care
·         Legal: assault and hate crimes, discrimination, estate planning, HIV, immigration, interpersonal violence, juvenile justice, transgender and queer
·         Mental health: helplines and e-support, intensive treatment, support groups, therapy groups
·         Social: arts, differently abled, general interest, sports and recreation, volunteering
·         Substance abuse: helplines and e-support, intensive treatment, support groups, therapy groups
 
Users can search the directory by entering a short service description, along with an optional zip code or address. The search returns a page with a list of resources meeting the user’s search description, listed in order of proximity and accompanied by a Google map for easier navigation.  Users can also browse resources by service category.
 
Organizations that provide LGBTQ-specific services can use the site to add or update their offerings.  All submissions are reviewed and verified before they are added or changed. Resources eligible for listing are those dedicated to LGBTQ people. Services that are not LGBTQ-specific, or services provided by individual or group practice providers, are not included at this time. 
 
The directory is intended as more than a much-needed resource for LGBTQ people and those who serve them, said Adler School President Raymond E. Crossman, Ph.D.
 
“It’s also to highlight the need for more services to underserved populations within the LGBTQ community,” he said. “This work through our LGBTQ Mental Health and Inclusion Center really arises from the Adler School’s mission to address social inequities and exclusion.”
 
Community support voiced
 
Chicago LGBT community and advocacy leaders are voicing strong support for the directory’s launch.  Years ago, the “painfully obvious” need for centralized information on services for sexual minorities spawned a physical list that Chicago-area practitioners updated and shared via email, said Braden Berkey, Psy.D., a Chicago clinical psychologist long recognized for his research, clinical practice and community work addressing sexual minority needs.
 
“Through the LGBTQ Mental Health and Inclusion Center at the Adler School, Dr. Osten-Garner has dramatically expanded this original idea,” Berkey said. “The new directory includes a dizzying array of services that are easily accessible in a beautiful format, and incorporates technology that allows agencies and organizations to update their own listings.”
 
Berkey and Kim Hunt, Executive Director of Affinity Community Services, a social justice organization that works with and on behalf of black LGBTQ communities, queer youth, and allies, each called the directory an indispensable resource for the LGBTQ community and those who serve its members. “The wide range of services presented provides a wealth of valuable information, and the ‘How to Use’ section allows users to navigate with ease,” Hunt said.
                                                                                                                  
Osten-Garner, who also serves as the Adler School’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Training and Community Engagement, said he and others recognize that the need for LGBTQ-competent services and support extends to people in communities well beyond Chicago.
 
“The Adler School has graciously funded the start-up of this directory; with ongoing financial support from additional benefactors, we hope to expand it to individual providers and services beyond the Chicagoland area,” Osten-Garner said.

Every Spring, Chicago House puts together an amazing Spring Brunch / Fashion Show at the Harold Washington Library downtown. (The 27th annual!!)

Held in the sun-soaked Garden Ballroom atop the Harold Washington Library, hundreds of fashionable Chicago House supporters will gather to view the latest fashion trends while sipping cocktails for a good cause. On their way to a 3 course catered brunch by Jewell Events Catering, attendees will choose personalized floral bouquets from our on-location flower market. The fun doesn’t end there as a fabulous extravaganza takes center stage, with runway fashion & dance performances.

“We are in talks with some fascinating fashion partners that we are very excited about, who will infuse lots of vibrant colors and designs into the show. Think of that “vibrant orchid” color that is making a splash right now. Coincidentally, purple is my favorite color. By far, the biggest challenge is to maintain the style and charm of this iconic event, while putting my personal spin on it. A challenge, I must say, I’m eager to take on!” says Mark Pino.

Queer performance artist, Peterson Toscano! He spent 17 years in the ex-gay no-homo hotel and came out on the other side with a sense of humor. He tackles many topics in his one-persons comedies–the Ex-Gay Movement, Homophobia, Sexism, Privilege, Climate Change, and Transgender Issues. He is also a Bible scholar who has unearthed the stories of many gender outlaws in the Bible.


In a special performance Peterson will present excerpts from his plays including “Doin’ Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House,” “Queer 101–Now I Know my gAy,B,Cs,” “The Re-Education of George W. Bush–No President Left Behind,” “Transfigurations–Transgressing Gender in the Bible,” “Jesus Had Two Daddies,” and his newest work, “Does This Apocalypse Make Me Look Fat?” 

Hilarious and insightful, Peterson is cracking open hearts and minds.  

Peterson is frequently featured in the media and has appeared in the New York Times, NPR Morning Edition, The Times of London, The Tyra Banks Show, and five documentary films including Logo TV’s “Be Real” program. He  helped produce and appears in the award winning documentary film, “This is What Love in Action Looks Like.” He has been published in The New Statesmen, The Gay and Lesbian Review, and in various LGBTQ anthologies including the Lambda Literary Award winner, “Gender Outlaws–The Next Generation” (edited by Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman). Since 2003 he has presented throughout North America and Europe at conferences and universities including Creating Change, Gender Odyssey, True Color, the Lambeth Conference, the American Academy of Religion Conference, Yale University, Boston University, University of Puget Sound, Earlham College, Vanderbilt University, McGill University, Cambridge University, and Pacific School of Religion.

He lives in Sunbury, PA with his partner, the South African memoirist, Glen Retief.

Songs From An Unmade Bed in Chicago

Pride Films and Plays continues its 2013-14 season with Songs from an Unmade Bed,  a theatrical song cycle with lyrics by Mark Campbell. Directed by PFP Artistic Associate Derek Van Barham with music direction by ensemble member Robert Ollis. 

The production will run March 27-April 27 at The Apollo Theater Studio, 2540 N Lincoln Ave.  Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

Songs from an Unmade Bed explores the experiences (romantic, sexual and otherwise) of gay men living in the city. Lyricist Mark Campbell worked with eighteen composers (one per song) to create a unique musical revue, accompanied by piano and cello, with gorgeous songs that range from funny, poignant, melancholy and ultimately hopeful about life and love. Songs from an Unmade Bed has previously been presented in New York City (Off-Broadway), Los Angeles and elsewhere; this will be its premiere professional production in Chicago.

“There’s something so beautiful about the simplicity of this show,” said director Barham. “Having one lyricist work with 18 different composers is ingenious.  What emerges is a very personal, articulate voice.  Each composer finds a different color and nuance of the character. The lyrics are so universal, and the music is just a delight.  We’re lucky to be working in such an intimate space at The Apollo, so that we can allow the audience to feel up close and personal with the performers.  The evening should have the feel of being invited over by a few handsome, young gentlemen on a cold winter’s night.  Who doesn’t love that?”

And this isn’t the first time. Chicago House has proudly showcased Prince’s fashion at their annual Spring Brunch and Fashion Show. His work has been featured in Style, Wedding Style and CS Magazines, and also at the Chicago Garden and Flower Show.


With his reputation for eye-popping color and dramatic fantasy, we can’t wait to see what he delivers for The Tease! Literally, we couldn’t wait… So we met with the dynamic designer at his boutique shop (3744 N Broadway) and got the nitty-gritty about Chicago House’s sexy new extravaganza.

Chicago House: This certainly isn’t your first design rodeo. How did you get started?

 Prince: I’ve been working in the interior design and fashion industries for over 20 years. During the “Club Kid” scene of the 90s, I was making clothes and costumes for myself and friends. Most people tell me I should pick one – either fashion or interior design – but I love the creativity of each, and so far have been able to keep them both alive. What started as just a passion of mine has turned into a full-fledged career with my own retail store in Chicago.


Chicago House: How did you get involved with Chicago House?

  Prince: I’ve attended many Chicago House events over the years, and it was the 2012 Spring Brunch and Fashion Show that made me think, “What a great place to show-off my own fashion!” I talked to Jeremy Hilborn (former Special Events Manager) about how I could participate, and before I knew it, I was working on a concept for the next Brunch and Fashion Show. The new concept was Alice in Wonderland.


Chicago House: Your boutique almost feels like being in Wonderland. Was the theme your idea?

  Prince: When I got involved, Chicago House had already decided on the Wonderland theme. I had an idea to transition Alice from a male (named Alex) to the girl we know and love. The final show told the story of Alice becoming more and more masculine throughout the event. The Queen of Hearts was played by Angelique Munro, and she had some great scenes throughout the performance. I really had such a great time collaborating with the Brunch event producers, and of course, the costumes I got to design were amazing!


Chicago House: Being a brand new event, people are curious about the costumes. Can you give us the scoop?

  Prince: Just like a good striptease, I don’t want to give away too much. What I can tell you is that our theme is loosely based on the seven deadly sins, with much more sex appeal. We worked really hard to carry a theme throughout, and not just have a string of performances. You’ll get a story along with amazing acts!


Chicago House: Not all of the seven deadly sins are so sexy… How are you tackling Sloth and Gluttony?

  Prince: It wasn’t easy, but we found a way to create an intimate – and sexy – experience for each one. For those trying to remember them all, we have Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Sloth and Pride. Lust and envy pretty much write themselves. For Gluttony, we take you to 18th century France with a burlesque performance of Marie Antoinette and her famous cake.


Chicago House: Ooh la la! What can the crowd expect in terms of the costumes at The Tease?

  Prince: Most of the guests will be familiar with the costumes of Cirque du Soleil, with skintight clothes and spray make-up. The Tease has elements of that but it doesn’t take itself as seriously. Think of it like the lovechild between Cirque and burlesque. The skill level of the acts will rival Cirque shows, but you’ll also feel the comedy of burlesque. If you’ve seen my costumes before (Check out some online), then you know I love feathers and sequins, all very Vegas showgirl. One of my signature skills is giving men a showgirl style, while keeping their masculinity intact.


Chicago House: The Tease features a lot of specialty acts like aerial juggling and gymnastics. Was it hard to design costumes for that type of performer?

  Prince: It was a challenge at times, but we came up with some beautiful ways to creatively match costumes with the personality of each act. The hardest thing about this show is the amount of costumes I’ll create. In the end, I’ll be custom designing nearly 28 different pieces for The Tease.


Chicago House: Which costumes are you most excited to reveal at The Tease?

  Prince: There are some amazing show-stopping outfits at The Tease, but I’m actually most excited for “Atmosphere Characters.” This handful of characters will be in full costume and roaming the off-stage areas, interacting with guests and connecting the crowd to what’s happening on stage. Their costumes are sexy and eye-catching, and they immerse the audience in the show.


Chicago House: Sounds like “All the world’s a stage,” at least at The Tease.

  Prince: That’s right! You won’t get just a bunch of cool-yet-disconnected performances. At times, you’re going to feel like you’re part of the show. The whole event atmosphere is going to be fantastic, and unlike any event you’ve been to before.


Chicago House: What do you like best about working with Chicago House?

  Prince: Chicago House has an amazing mission! I’ve always admired how they have evolved over the years to meet the needs of Chicago’s LGBTQ community. They also have a lot of “firsts” under their belt, from being the first organization in the Midwest to provide housing for people with HIV and AIDS, to opening the TransLife Center, the first comprehensive program offering holistic services to the transgender community. I’m proud to support such a great organization who has been serving Chicago for decades!


Chicago House: We can’t wait to see The Tease on March 1st! What else can you tell us about the show?

  Prince: I’ve worked on many events like this, and attended even more, and I can tell you that The Tease will be one of the best produced shows you’ve ever seen!

Dear Friends,


As a person living with and concerned about HIV, I am enormously grateful to have spent the past 23 years of my career nurturing a vibrant and powerful community for social justice at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC).  It is therefore with mixed emotions that I announce my plans to step down as AFC’s president and CEO at the end of March to take the helm at the Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC).


My time at AFC has been rewarding beyond measure. I am proud to have served people affected by HIV, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the bravest activists I have ever known, and worked to advance system changes with incalculable positive impact for vulnerable people and communities.


In my next chapter, I will channel my energies – and all that I have learned – to advance the mission of HBHC, which is Chicago’s community-based health care provider for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning/queer (LGBTQ) people and allies.  As HBHC’s president and CEO, I will apply new tools to the continued pursuit of health care justice for all, with a particular focus on meeting the needs of medically underserved populations.


I believe all people deserve non-judgmental, high-quality, and culturally competent care that they can afford.  The dynamic health care landscape offers great opportunities as well as systemic challenges. For diverse LGBTQ populations, there can be no equality without health.  This is why I plan to enlist HBHC’s expertise in support of community-based advocacy, led by AFC and others, to ensure the implementation of the federal health reform law confers maximum benefits to people in our communities.


AFC is fortunate to rely on a talented staff and deep bench of stalwart leaders who advance our mission through results-oriented policy advocacy, systems coordination, and programmatic development. Tapping into our pool of influential leaders, the Board of Directors has appointed Vice President of Policy, John Peller – a local and national leader in HIV-related policy and programs – to the post of interim president/CEO, effective April 1.  I am confident that under John’s leadership, the organization will remain strong and determined to apply the knowledge and technical know-how amassed in nearly 30 years fighting the epidemic to accelerate the fight and help all those disadvantaged in the epidemic’s wake.


As a trusted AFC ally and friend, I extend to you my heartfelt thanks for your kindness and steadfast support.  Working together, we have an unprecedented opportunity to avail better outcomes in the health and wellness of people affected by HIV.

The Polar Vortex continues to hold Chicago hostage this winter, but Circuit MOM and REVOLUTION are here to break through the grey, dark days with their first major dance event of 2014.  ARCTIC REVOLUTION hits Chicago’s historic House Of Blues stage on Saturday, February 15, 2014, with a vengeance.


Prepare to dance off your winter blues to the deep sexy beats of international Producer/Remixer-DJ Aron Abizker.  This Israeli superstar has spun major events around the globe and brings his signature sound to this signature event he made his own in 2013.  In true Circuit MOM form, the two story tall set (designed by David Hilborn) will be a spectacular, glittering, carved iceberg where muscled arctic warriors will strut their stuff throughout the night.   The phenomenal custom light show designed by Jim Goodall at RGB LIGHTS just might transport you to the top of the earth, but the hundreds of hot bodies dancing next to you are sure to keep you warm.

The Tease is Chicago House’s new event that will immerse you in the sophisticated worlds of burlesque, cirque and Vegas. Created by Keith Elliott and Todd Kiech (Dance For Life, Chicago Takes Off), this unique theatrical performance will craft an intimate experience that includes lavishly choreographed production numbers as well as one of a kind specialty acts.


The event takes place on Saturday, March 1st at Chicago’s newest event space – Moonlight Studios (1446 W Kinzie St) – in the trendy West Loop. Death-defying aerial acts and tantalizing striptease transports the audience to a world of fantasy and imagination, while keeping them at the center of the action with an engaging “theater in the round” seating. The Tease re-imagines the audacity of burlesque, exploring a more artistic side of this intimate craft.

Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus (CGMC) presents their second winter cabaret show, “Let’s Do It!” The show celebrates the accomplishments and works of three prominent composers, important to those in the LGBT community: Cole Porter, Stephen Schwartz, and Elton John. “Let’s Do It!”, under the direction of Larry Todd Cousineau andPatrick Sinozich, will have two performances: February 25 at the Laugh Factory and March 8 at Mayslake Peabody Estate.


 


Song selections include the show’s title “Let’s Do It”, “Meadowlark”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”,and many other classic standards from songbooks of these prolific artists.

Maggie Faris, the winner of Stand Out: The National Queer Comedy Search returns to the stage where she took the title of the next great queer comedian. Faris competed live in September 2013 in the culmination of a national search that lasted six months with over 75 competitors and three rounds, including submission, online voting and live competition. Stand Out was presented by Outloud Chicago, The Advocate Magazine and Absolut Vodka and boasted big cash and media prizes. As one of her prizes, Faris returns to headline Queer Comedy at Zanies.


Queer Comedy at Zanies has been named the Advocate.com‘s “9 LGBT Friendly Comedy Shows You Should Be Supporting,” Timeout Chicago‘s “Critic’s Pick,” The Redeye’s “Do” and included in Chicago Reader’s “The Agenda” and “Culture Vulture” with the praise “More, please.”
