Gay Countertenor David Daniels at Chicago’s Lyric Opera this Season

A countertenor
is a male alto who sings with a falsetto,
a technique that until the 20th century was synonymous with castration. Countertenors, despite having their manhood snipped away from them, were enormously popular and essential to Baroque opera, a style that enjoyed its heyday centuries ago. In the last 50 years, the Baroque canon has become popular once again, and David Daniels has been leading the demand for countertenors for the better part of the decade.

Audiences are taken aback the first time they hear Daniels sing. He told TIME OUT CHICAGO ,  “I’m a guy with facial hair and pretty stocky and then you [hear] this high voice coming out. The comment that I hear is that most people are shocked, also I hear that it seems incredibly natural to my body and to who I am for the sound to be coming out.”

Daniels has also been credited as the first openly gay opera singer, something he typically shrugs off. “People have made such a big deal about me being the first openly gay, not really countertenor, but openly gay singer, in the press and on television, that type of thing…It’s not necessarily easy to be a gay man in any instance, [but] it has not been a difficult road for me in that way.”

He joins the Lyric Opera  this season in the November production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as Oberon and will also be appearing in their  production of “Hercules” as Lichas in March 2011. Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1966, David Daniels is one of the world’s most respected operatic singers and has singularly broadened the appeal of the countertenor voice for contemporary audiences. Making his professional debut in 1992, he initially achieved renown as a superb interpreter of Handel and other Baroque composers. A charismatic presence in both opera houses and recital halls with unmatched vocal dexterity, Daniels continues to expand the countertenor repertoire with exciting forays into the works of Britten, Berlioz and Bernstein among others.

Gay NYC Rapper CAZWELL at Berlin June 15th

Few new artists
embody the spirit of downtown
NYC more completely than Cazwell.

Sexy Gay New York City Rapper Cazwell is a leading figure in the renaissance of New York City nightlife that has taken place over the last five years.

Cazwell’s music—a ridiculously fun mix of electrified dance music and old school hip hop—is the perfect example of the new spirit of pop music. Says Caz, “When people ask me how to describe my style sometimes I say ‘Just imagine if Biggie Smalls ate Donna Summer for breakfast.’”

Having collaborated over the years with a who’s who of downtown New York and abroad— including Amanda Lepore, Larry Tee, Boy George, David Lachapelle, The Ones, Chris Joss, Peppermint, GoodandEvil, Karl Giant and Lost Daze—his  ”Watch My Mouth ”  CD is the natural next step for a performer schooled in clubland, pulling together some of Cazwell’s most effortlessly catchy singles and pushing things forward with new tracks perfectly-suited to bring the party.

Club bangers like “All Over Your Face” (which first tore up the Top 40 dance charts in ‘06) and the recent viral video sensation “I Seen Beyonce At Burger King” sit nicely next to new party jams like “Give Me Tonight” (featuring the classic Shannon chorus hook) and “Get Into It,” a funky fashion-hop duet starring Amanda Lepore. “All I wanna do is party and have a good time! I think everyone can relate nto that right about now,” explains Cazwell.

Watch his  awesome  GIVE ME TONIGHT  remix.

CAZWELL  will perform in Chicago this Thursday, JUNE 15th  at  Berlin  .  954 W. Belmont.

Steven Brinberg IS Barbra Streisand – Chicago’s

“When you first hear Steven’s Simply Barbra CD, for the first brief moment, you almost think, ‘My God! Is that really her?’ [Streisand] It’s so captivating! Not only does he have a wonderful take on her — not at all mean-spirited — and this ability to imitate her, he also captures a lot of moments and nuances that are terrific. It was very impressive.” – Marvin Hamlisch

Me too! When I first heard Steven sing Barbra, I was quite impressed. He was just in Chicago and I had the chance to see and hear him perform live.

LAKESHORE SALON SERIES , an intimate event held in private homes in Chicago, which just finished their second  annual season and going into it’s third.

Co-founded in 2008 by Thomas Hensel, Andrew Delicata and Kristopher McDowell , Kmp Artists , – they have  presented quality entertainers in some of Chicago and Evanston’s most elegant homes. Food and champagne is provided along with stimulating conversation and live entertainment.

The salon series produces an event once per month (usually on Sundays) from Fall to Spring each year. For more information on the next season, please visit…..

Back to Babs!  Steven Brinberg  is the premier Barbra Streisand impressionist, performing his incredible show, Simply Barbra, to international acclaim both on stage and television (and performing twice with none other than Marvin Hamlisch!) as he pays homage to all that is Streisand!

Steven does not lip-sync his performances but accurately portrays Streisand with his own voice! With over a decade of performing experience, his amazing show has Steven in demand literally worldwide!

We chatted briefly in Chicago, then Steven was headed off to Ireland. His career started quite by accident as he tells DEEP DISH …”I was performing cabaret shows as myself, and I would sing snippets of other voices – Cher, Katharine Hepburn, Billie Holiday – but my Barbra was the most popular. One day a friend suggested that I do an entire Barbra show, but I was like “I don’t even look like her and I don’t know anything about makeup.” But I finally booked a couple of weeks to perform as Barbra in New York – and the show just took off.”

Singing Streisand is a rarity. “Other than the veteran performer Jim Bailey, I am the only other male Barbra (that I know of) who sings live. Hers is such a unique voice that it is very hard to do properly. I was inspired when in an interview Barbra was asked what she thought of all the men who do her and she said “I wish they’d do me better!” and I thought I am going to be the first one to do her justice and NOT cross my eyes and be mean…I wanted to be flattering to her because I am such a fan…..I have never met Barbra…..but she knows me. Her manager hired me to sing at Donna Karan’s birthday party – and through her stage director, she told me what to say at the party. We almost met when she was at the same play I was – but I lost my nerve to go over to her. She later learned that I was there and said, “Why didn’t he say hello?” But I just wasn’t ready to meet her…”

Steven has been able to see Babs perform on several occassions – giving him an opportunity to study her up close.
He tells Barbra news

“I had a friend in Los Angeles who knew someone who knew someone who could get tickets for the 1986 ONE VOICE concert. There were only 500 seats and it wasn’t easy. When he said yes, then I had to convince my parents to give me the money… a lot for a kid to spend! Even then, people were saying this might be her last concert. It was well worth it. We were served dinner on her tennis court. I saw Bette, Whoopi, Goldie,Walter Matthau (they must have made up from DOLLY) everyone seemed to be famous except my party. It was amazing to hear her sing live for the first time and think “This is not a record!”.

More recently, I was in Australia while she was there also, and Marvin got my pianist and I great seats up close (the concert in the rain in Sydney). It was wild. I did my show one night, saw her show the next night, did my show the next night, and people in the audience waved the flashlights they got at her show! I did a lot of TV while I was there and am told that she saw me on one of the shows! I hope it was the one where the lighting was so beautiful (The Bert Show) cause that’s important to me, and to Barbra. The brief scene I have in the new movie CAMP (after the very end credits) is also lit beautifully. I think she’ll be pleased at how I look as her.”

What’s next for Steven Brinberg?
“Continuing to tour all over the place – and I’m hoping to perform again as myself. My real voice and look are so different than Barbra – but I’m not giving up Barbra. I would just like to be a boy also. I’d love to be a CSI killer and have people go, “Guess what else he does.” “

Steven will perform Milwaukee PRIDE  FEST  June 11-13  –

Gay Chicago Hottie Ronnie Kroell Goes Full Frontal Nude for Playgirl

Reality Television and
Social Media has created
 a new world of celebrities.

The exposure that a TV show and your Facebook fan page can give someone, affords people the ability to reach new heights. Welcome to the 21st Century!

Chicagoan Ronnie Kroell was the only gay contestant on the first year of Make Me A Super Model. Ronnie was  a full-time student at the University of Illinois at Chicago  had plans to take home the top prize. He came very close!  He came in second place but the exposure has been  HUGE  for him and his career.

Cocktails to Couture. From pouring drinks at MiniBar onward and upward to SuperModel, Ronnie has had a couple very busy years!
He has been in the news a lot lately with the buzz around his Playgirl photo shoot!

A couple months ago, Daniel Nardicio of Playgirl secured Ronnie for photo shoot. The Levi Johnston shoot created quite a stir, but Ronnie will go  FULL FRONTAL, all the  way!  The shoot happened this  past week.

I spoke to Daniel last night.  He called me from New York. “Ronnie Kroell is shot and DONE! He was shot by Lope Navo Wednesday at The Grace Hotel. And I have to say, it’s going to be groundbreaking for Playgirl. The shots are amazing, and Ronnie is yes, hard and full frontal. You will GAG!”

Ronnie revealed, “The theme of the shoot was to celebrate fashion and one’s ability to express themselves, but also throughout the shoot,  being able to see beyond the clothing labels and beyond the labels that society puts on us to reveal something we all have – the human body, fragile, vulnerable and beautiful.”

And he added, “I am VERY happy to have worked with a truly talented creative team on  this  PLAYGIRL COVER SHOOT. Stay tuned for pictures to be released on or before MAY 15th and to get your own copy of the SUMMER 2010 issue of PLAYGIRL on JUNE 15th!!”

Daniel is very excited as well.  He  told me, “I’m convinced that the Ronnie Kroell shoot will bring Playgirl up to a whole new level.

The entire crew made for an exciting day for Playgirl, and a next step in our evolution as a magazine. I trust readers are going to love it.

IT WAS  GREAT! Honestly, it could not have gone better!”

Chicago Colori Paint Store and HGTV Color Splash with David Bromstad

“Didn’t every little girl grow up playing with backhoes, excavators and gradalls?” asks Michelle Quaranta, owner of the Bucktown paint and design boutique, COLORI. As a child Quaranta, a Chicago native, joined her father on 5 a.m. excursions to the family’s road construction sites, and soon found herself clocking in. After starting her own construction business in 1999, Michelle realized that as much as she loved building from the ground up, her passion for bringing color into these spaces was undeniable, and she soon found herself living a modern day Cinderella story filled with premium eco-friendly paints, creativity and a chic Bucktown address. 2243 W. North Ave. Chicago. 773-252-4923

Michelle’s dream of bringing C2 paint into the fashion lover’s repertoire became a reality in May of 2006 when she launched Colori Eco Paint Boutique. Since its opening, the feisty “Queen of Color” has single handedly redefined the way people experience color when shopping for paint. In addition to owning and operating her store, Quaranta stays busy serving as a self-proclaimed Color Therapist providing color consulting for interior designers, architects and homeowners alike. In 2009 Michelle was accepted as a member into the prestigious Color Marketing Group.

This past weekend, Michelle and Colori Paint hosted an in-store appearance with David Bromstad, host of HGTV’s Color Splash, More than 500 people entered the  Colori contest to get one of 120 seats available at the Chicago event! David talked about paint and took questions from audience. He is even more charming in person than you can imagine and has this infectious happy energy!

Handsome hottie Bromstad, winner of HGTV’s first “Design Star” reality show four years ago, announced he  has brought the show  to Miami for the new season, which is filming now and will air in July.   The new season will have bigger budgets and draw off  many of Miami’s local artisans and design resources. And he said we’ll be seeing more of him  him sculpting and designing pieces.  He is very happy and very excited to be filming in his city where he lives with his partner of 6 years and their French Bulldog!

“I think Miami is a city that  is absolutely inspiring; from the old and new architecture, to the mass amount of artisans and craftsmen, and of course the undeniable weather and overwhelming sexiness.  Miami is unique with its international influences, especially from South America.  This makes it the only city of its kind in America.  I call it the American Riviera.”

“Design in South Florida will absolutely be different than what viewers say in San Francisco.  Because Miami has a very specific look of being clean, sleek and sexy my homeowners will definitely want that brought into their homes.  Homeowners in San Francisco have a different aesthetic, more of a comfortable, contemporary and traditional feel.  The designs in Miami will push the boundaries of design, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to do so!

David is really an artist and not really an interior designer. He has an exuberance, passion and decorating savvy when transforming tired rooms into vibrant spaces! “Color is the root of great design,”  says David. “I like to blend styles that incorporate realism and fantasy. Walt Disney really inspired and motivated me. And I love Philippe Starck – he has such an innovative way of creating.”

David  recently partnered with Mythic Paints. “This paint is amazing!  Amazing coverage, low oder, very natural and non-toxic. My color line encompasses both timeless and innovative colors. Many people suffer from what I call  COLORPHOBIA and are afraid to step out of their comfort zone. With my line, you can mix and match across the palette and discover combinations that speak to YOU. Cure your colorphobia and embrace your color-fabulous you! Don’t be afraid of color!”

So what is David’s home like?

“My place is a little quirky. It’s very happy. Lot’s a greys and whites with an eclectic mix. I like big, bold pieces. I love color, but I prefer white or grey walls and pops of color in the furniture, artwork, and accessories.  Right now my home has white and gray walls with pops of acid yellow, lime green and red. But I keep changing it up and it’s  always  evolving. It’s like that old saying, the cobbler is so busy making shoes for his customers that he has no time to make some for his own children! My place is never finished!”

“I think it’s important to create an environment not just a room. I like to use murals and custom-built furniture to create a 3-d world that will transport you into another reality.”

David is so nice and so personable and so down to earth,  you can’t help but love him! “To me I’m just a regular guy who has a really cool job.  I never intended on being in the public eye, therefore I never craved the attention.  Now that I’m getting it, I can’t complain.  I think I am the luckiest guy in the world to be blessed with what God has given me.  I owe my parents and family everything.  They taught me honest values that transcend fame.

I really like to help out any charities that help out the gay community and HIV/AIDS.  Going to the GLAAD awards in San Francisco and presenting was one of the best memories ever.”

Before he jetted off back to Miami to resume filming he said, “I am so excited for Color Splash in Miami. It is going to be a very different show; a whole new cast.  New city.  New and exciting experiences.  I really want to feature local artisans and craftsmen here in the Miami area.  The talent here is so beyond anywhere else I have ever been, and I want to show America how fabulous Miami is.  I am also going to show everyone that I’m not just a designer and painter, but I also build sculptures and create art and architectural installations myself.  It should be a fabulous adventure!”

David also said more of his art will become available for purchase this on his site!

ADAM BOUSKA in Chicago to Discuss NOH8 with the LGBT Community

Photographer ADAM BOUSKA

became a LGBT activist quite by accident. He calls it “accidental activism“. Gosh, he has come a long way in the 6 years we have known him!

Derrick and I met Adam in 2003.  He was living here in the suburbs of Chicago and had just graduated college where he studied Computer Science. Being a photographer myself, I was always on the lookout for fresh new young talent.

I met Adam and asked him to pose for me. During our photo shoot, he confided that Computer Science was not really his passion. And though he was dabbling with modeling, it was the art of photography and expression potential that really intrigued him.

Shortly afterwards, Adam moved to Southern California. We stayed in touch now and then through  MySpace and watched as Adam’s young budding career began to blossom exponentially through social media communities and popular blogs!

It didn’t take long and his name was sprouting up everywhere on the Internet!

In November 2008, Proposition 8 in California happened. California wanted to put a stop to the idea of gay marriage. The defeat of Prop 8 provoked a groundswell of activism within the LGBTQ community and many new political and protest organizations were formed in response to the defeat. It was like Stonewall was happening again!

Adam was in Chicago this weekend speaking at LGBT CHANGE UNITE + FIGHT,  EAA Midwest Conference at Columbia College. The conference ran 3 days and was a series of workshops and speakers geared towards  activism in the hopes to fire up the Midwest LGBTQ communities.

Adam, his partner Jeff Parshley  and some friends attended the Prop 8 rallies in Los Angeles. Afterwords, they got so emotionally stirred they knew they wanted to do something,  to make some kind of statement. He and a dozen friends went to the store and bought some paints and duct tape, went back to his apartment and shot photos. Using photography as his voice, Adam placed tape over their mouths and painted the now famous NOH8 on their cheeks, and the next day posted their images to MySpace and Facebook, to demonstrate their silent protest.

Before he knew it, a dozen more friends wanted to do the same thing . Adam shot more photos and those friends also posted them online. The next month 30 of their friends wanted the same photos! It started to grow exponentially. In the 6 months that followed it exploded and nearly 500 people had been photographed and pictures were flooding the Internet.

Soon celebrities want to join in and show their support. To date, 3,000+ faces have been shot by Adam and his team for the NOH8 Campaign. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more.

Cindy McCain, wife of former Presidential candidate Senator John McCain, was even photographed by Adam, speaking out on behalf of gay marriage rights as part of a popular ongoing photo campaign. “Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter – marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue. It’s about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country.”

The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, appearing on various local and national news programs and publications. The images are currently being used on various social networking sites to spread the message of equality, predominantly Facebook and Twitter. Eventually the images are expected to be compiled for a large-scale media campaign. The group just shot their 3rd PSA. There has been talks of a billboard, possible calendar, coffee table books and even a documentary.

Just last month the team shot 500 people in 5 hours in New York City. Adam hopes to tour major cities soon, doing more open shoots and spreading the message across the country. “This is much bigger than just  about Prop 8.  And when we win this, when Prop 8 is overturned, and it will be,  we’re not stopping.  It’s about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell….it’s about gay civil rights….it’s about the big picture now!”  Groups as far away as Germany and  Australia have even started similar campaigns.

Remember when Gay Pride and National Coming Out  day was just once a year? Thanks to the power of Social Media and the interconnectedness of the Internet these days, we can make a statement about who we are and show the world our messages. “Activism needs to be a part of your DAILY LIFE and your lifestyle. Not just once a year.”

THE NOH8 store online  has t-shirts, bumper stickers, tattoos and my favorite, THE BRACELET!  Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for Marriage Equality and anti-discrimination on a global level through an educational and interactive media campaign.

Adam will hopefully get back to Chicago later this year for an Open Call NOH8 shoot here. We’ll keep you posted!

Raquel Welchs Cleavage Sets off Alarms at Chicago’s O’hare Airport

Icon Actress Raquel Welch, in town this week to promote her new book,Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage, found herself in a bit of a squeeze with Transportation Security Administration agents at O’Hare.

She got no special treatment and officials questioned the actress in a glass office in full view of other passengers. Welch’s spokeswoman says the metal supports in the actress’s Dolce & Gabbana bustier set off the airport metal detectors, subjecting the 69-year-old Welch to a pat-down in front of other passengers.

No weapons found, Welch was allowed to board her return flight to Los Angeles.

“She probably isn’t going to fly in a bustier any more,” says Miss Welch’s spokesman of the incident.
