Gay Boystown Neighborhood Walking Tours

WANT THE 411 on BOYSTOWN?
Whether you live here and think you know it all or maybe newly relocated and want to learn more, or just visiting – This 90-minute walking tour highlights the Boystown gayborhood, presented by improviser Margaret Hicks of Chicago Elevated, and lends a deeper, historical perspective to the area known for its overwhelming gayness and well-endowed rainbow pylons.
DID YOU KNOW?
-that when the rainbow rocket-shaped pylons were installed in 1998, Boystown became the first officially recognized gay neighborhood in the country?
-that Little Jims was the first gay bar in Boystown?
-that Roscoes was the first bar to open their windows to the public?
“Come join me in a trip through one of Chicago’s most distinctive neighborhoods. Boystown was the first officially recognized gay village in the country and believe me, it has a lot to show for it. We’ll start at one of Boystown’s oldest bars – Roscoe’s.
We’ll taste some wine at Kafka and learn about “queer space.” We’ll talk about the pansy craze of the 1920’s and end at a bar that survived one of it’s own Chicago Fires, Scarlet. The price for the tour includes a wine-tasting and other gifts, drinks at bars will not be included in the price!”
Margaret loves Chicago and its many unique neighborhoods, and if you’ve ever been fortunate enough to take one of her walking tours, you no doubt agree.
Hicks’s excitement for and understanding of Boystown, gay rights, and Chicago history creates a contagious enthusiasm as you travel through the neighborhood. Yet, it’s not just a history excursion, but an interactive, sometimes hilarious, evening of engagement with local businesses and entrepreneurs.
Boystown Tour runs until October 31st!
Reservations are required and the tour is cash only.
Thursdays, Saturdays & Sundays at 5:00PM – 6:30PM – $20.00
Call 773.593.4873 or email margaret @ chicagoelevated.com for reservations.
Gay NYC Rapper CAZWELL at Berlin June 15th

Few new artists
embody the spirit of downtown
NYC more completely than Cazwell.
Sexy Gay New York City Rapper Cazwell is a leading figure in the renaissance of New York City nightlife that has taken place over the last five years.
Cazwell’s music—a ridiculously fun mix of electrified dance music and old school hip hop—is the perfect example of the new spirit of pop music. Says Caz, “When people ask me how to describe my style sometimes I say ‘Just imagine if Biggie Smalls ate Donna Summer for breakfast.’”
Having collaborated over the years with a who’s who of downtown New York and abroad— including Amanda Lepore, Larry Tee, Boy George, David Lachapelle, The Ones, Chris Joss, Peppermint, GoodandEvil, Karl Giant and Lost Daze—his ”Watch My Mouth ” CD is the natural next step for a performer schooled in clubland, pulling together some of Cazwell’s most effortlessly catchy singles and pushing things forward with new tracks perfectly-suited to bring the party.
Club bangers like “All Over Your Face” (which first tore up the Top 40 dance charts in ‘06) and the recent viral video sensation “I Seen Beyonce At Burger King” sit nicely next to new party jams like “Give Me Tonight” (featuring the classic Shannon chorus hook) and “Get Into It,” a funky fashion-hop duet starring Amanda Lepore. “All I wanna do is party and have a good time! I think everyone can relate nto that right about now,” explains Cazwell.
Watch his awesome GIVE ME TONIGHT remix.
CAZWELL will perform in Chicago this Thursday, JUNE 15th at Berlin . 954 W. Belmont.

Writer Joseph Erbentraut says Who Needs Boystown?

Yesterday on Huffington Post, writer Joseph Erbentraut asked WHO NEEDS BOYSTOWN?
It sounds like he has only lived here a couple years yet has become part of the bitter-jaded crowd.
He says, “When I first moved to Chicago, I was convinced the neighborhood would emanate a strange sort of gay magic – a combination of diversity, social justice and acceptance unlike anything I’d ever experienced in my rural Wisconsin upbringing.
Two years later, those expectations I once had for the city-designated hub of Chicago’s LGBT community are surely naive, if not delusional. While Boystown offers the largest concentration of queer-centric spaces, the area’s overflow of saccarine gayness has had an increasingly sour, if watered down, taste.”
Gays are EVERYWHERE. You are right in that comment Joseph. We are in every neighborhood, all over the city now. 25 years ago, there was a much higher concentration of gays living right in Boystown. And yes, the gays made it nice, and the straights moved in as times changed. Like so many gayborhoods around the country. So you were silly and naive to think the neighborhood would emanate a strange sort of gay magic – a combination of diversity, social justice and acceptance unlike anything I’d ever experienced in my rural Wisconsin upbringing. – I am sure you can admit, it’s better than rural Wisconsin!
What Boystown IS these days, is a central meeting place for the LGBT community. A collection of bars, nightclubs and restaurants for the LGBT community to come to. Sure while there are plenty of diverse and gay welcoming bars EVERYWHERE, from Bucktown to Uptown, I prefer to spend my money in a gay owned gay bar and be with mostly gay people, instead of hanging out with a straighter crowd of a gay welcoming place. We do need Boystown. We do need a central hub of gayness.
To each his own Joseph. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Jacks on Halsted – Boystown Chicago Bistro and Brunch Spot

Jack’s on Halsted,
owned by chef Jack Jones,
was selected as best new restaurant by Chicago Magazine, when they opened. And since then, have won numerous awards and recently reinvented themselves with a fresh new menu.
A contemporary, American restaurant, Jack’s features global cuisine incorporating Asian, Mediterranean and New World making it a true American blend.
For the past ten years Jack’s has been serving distinctive, skillfully prepared, high quality food for all to enjoy. “We strive to use only the finest and freshest ingredients available. We are passionate about two things, serving healthful, excellent food and being sensible about our prices. Jack’s on Halsted is commited to offering the best food value possible.” – says Chef Jack Jones , who has worked at some of Chicago’s finest dining establishments including Yoshi’s Café, Printer’s Row, Terczak’s and Spiaggia.
Located in Boystown on the corner of Halsted and Belmont in Lakeview, Jack’s is in the most diverse and exciting neighborhood in all of Chicago. With Blue Man Theater just steps away and some of Chicago’s most unique shops, not to mention clubs, bars and restaurants, Lakeview is a happening spot. Jack’s is the place to start or end your night out, be sure to ask for a table at the window!

Along with the new menu came some other new improvements. Drew Johnson, a longtime employee of Jack’s, recently became Jack’s business partner and managing partner. The restaurant is now open 7 days for dinner plus a hip Sunday brunch with DJ Gerry and guest bartenders who serve up $2 Mimosas, $3 Bloody Marys and $5 Special Brunch Martinis. Food at brunch ranges from Omletes and Classic Eggs Benedict to Orange Flavored French Toast and Steak and Eggs.
ALSO NEW, a charming patio out back, away from the street noise. Plus, Late Night Food! Wednesday thru Saturday food is now available till 1am. In these economic challenging times Jacks is also offering $6 Martinis everyday, and Tuesdays half-price bottles of wine. There is also a 3-course Dinner menu available for just $25.95 that offers a great selection of starters, entrees and a dessert!
You will find everything from steak to seafood to brugers here in a wide selction of prices. Jones’s “pork tasting” pulls out all the stops by offering a three-way sampling of thyme- and shallot-infused grilled pork tenderloin, smoky Memphis-style pulled pork, and succulent, fall-off-the-bone baby backs. We generally prefer our ribs to put up a fight but the Asian spices and juicy texture more than compensate. Maple-sparked mashed sweet potatoes offer extra allure to this hog triptych!

Pat Bruno, Chicago Sun-Times said,
…The cuisine style at Jack’s on Halsted is essentially contemporary American. However, within the broad interpretation of that style of cooking, there is a definite license to wheel and deal those meals. …(Read full review )
Phil Vettel, Chicago Tribune
…Jack’s is a moderately priced American bistro whose menu presents familiar dishes tweaked with Jones’ personal touch. “It’s like Woody Allen’s second and third movies,” quips Jones. “Different, but the underlying neuroses are the same.” …(Read full review )
