Spring Fashion Is Coming Back May 4th
Every Spring, Chicago House puts together an amazing Spring Brunch / Fashion Show at the Harold Washington Library downtown. (The 27th annual!!)
Held in the sun-soaked Garden Ballroom atop the Harold Washington Library, hundreds of fashionable Chicago House supporters will gather to view the latest fashion trends while sipping cocktails for a good cause. On their way to a 3 course catered brunch by Jewell Events Catering, attendees will choose personalized floral bouquets from our on-location flower market. The fun doesn’t end there as a fabulous extravaganza takes center stage, with runway fashion & dance performances.
Some come just to enjoy fabulous food and friends, while others come ready to shop! This signature event is home to Chicago House’s largest silent auction, featuring over 200 gift packages to bid on. In the past, savvy bidders have taken home unique artwork, deluxe travel passes and even landscaping packages. There really is something for everyone, and all proceeds directly support the life-saving work of Chicago House. Get your shop on and know it’s for a truly worthwhile cause!
“We are in talks with some fascinating fashion partners that we are very excited about, who will infuse lots of vibrant colors and designs into the show. Think of that “vibrant orchid” color that is making a splash right now. Coincidentally, purple is my favorite color. By far, the biggest challenge is to maintain the style and charm of this iconic event, while putting my personal spin on it. A challenge, I must say, I’m eager to take on!” says Mark Pino.
Mark Pino is Chicago House’s newest Special Events Manager, and he chats about the upcoming brunch at the Chicago House blog.
The Spring Brunch and Fashion Show regularly sells out, so waste no time in securing your seat. Purchase tickets online beginning March 18. Chicago House.

David Ernesto Munar Leaves Aids Foundation for Howard Brown
Dear Friends,
As a person living with and concerned about HIV, I am enormously grateful to have spent the past 23 years of my career nurturing a vibrant and powerful community for social justice at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC). It is therefore with mixed emotions that I announce my plans to step down as AFC’s president and CEO at the end of March to take the helm at the Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC).
My time at AFC has been rewarding beyond measure. I am proud to have served people affected by HIV, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the bravest activists I have ever known, and worked to advance system changes with incalculable positive impact for vulnerable people and communities.
In my next chapter, I will channel my energies – and all that I have learned – to advance the mission of HBHC, which is Chicago’s community-based health care provider for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning/queer (LGBTQ) people and allies. As HBHC’s president and CEO, I will apply new tools to the continued pursuit of health care justice for all, with a particular focus on meeting the needs of medically underserved populations.
I believe all people deserve non-judgmental, high-quality, and culturally competent care that they can afford. The dynamic health care landscape offers great opportunities as well as systemic challenges. For diverse LGBTQ populations, there can be no equality without health. This is why I plan to enlist HBHC’s expertise in support of community-based advocacy, led by AFC and others, to ensure the implementation of the federal health reform law confers maximum benefits to people in our communities.
AFC is fortunate to rely on a talented staff and deep bench of stalwart leaders who advance our mission through results-oriented policy advocacy, systems coordination, and programmatic development. Tapping into our pool of influential leaders, the Board of Directors has appointed Vice President of Policy, John Peller – a local and national leader in HIV-related policy and programs – to the post of interim president/CEO, effective April 1. I am confident that under John’s leadership, the organization will remain strong and determined to apply the knowledge and technical know-how amassed in nearly 30 years fighting the epidemic to accelerate the fight and help all those disadvantaged in the epidemic’s wake.
As a trusted AFC ally and friend, I extend to you my heartfelt thanks for your kindness and steadfast support. Working together, we have an unprecedented opportunity to avail better outcomes in the health and wellness of people affected by HIV.
Yours truly,
David Ernesto Munar
President/CEO

Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame To Induct 14 Individuals and 2 Organizations

Fourteen individuals and two
organizations will be inducted Nov. 12 into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of
Fame, the country’s only known government-sponsored hall of fame that honors
members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities.
The inductees were selected by a
committee composed of former inductees, which reviewed nominations submitted by
members of the public. The names were released by Friends of the Chicago Gay
and Lesbian Hall of Fame, a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The chosen nominees will be
inducted at the Hall of Fame’s annual ceremony, which will take place from 5:30
p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday,
Nov. 12, at the Chicago History
Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., Chicago. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., and the
program is scheduled for 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the
public.

Chicago women’s- and LGBT-rights activist and a former LGBT mayoral liaison
under Mayor Richard M. Daley, was recently elected as the new

to supporting an institution that has consistently recognized the best and the
brightest from our communities and our allies. This year’s inductees are no
exception.”
“We welcome the 2013 inductees’ addition,” said Israel
Wright, executive director of the Friends organization. “It continues to show
how the important contributions from our LGBT communities and from our friends
pave the way for the future. It is humbling to recognize each inductee’s
special efforts to create change in ways that affect us all so greatly.”

The Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame was established in
1991 under the auspices of what was then the Chicago Commission on Human
Relations’ Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian (later, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual
and Transgender) Issues, a municipal government agency. At the end of 2011, the
advisory council ceased to exist after a commission restructuring, and the
Friends organization succeeded it as caretaker of the Hall of Fame in
partnership with city government.
Beginning with the first ceremony in 1991, former Mayor
Richard M. Daley personally participated in the Hall of Fame’s induction
ceremonies. Current Mayor Rahm Emanuel has continued to do so.
The Hall of Fame’s purpose is to recognize the achievements
of LGBT Chicagoans, their contributions to the development of the city, and the
help they have received from others. In 2013, it holds its 23rd annual
induction ceremony and continues to represent an official recognition by
Chicago’s government of the city’s LGBT residents and their allies.
Those selected for the “individual” category are or were
members of Chicago’s LGBT communities and have made single far-reaching or
significant long-term contributions to the quality of life of those communities
or of the city as a whole. Those in the “organization” category are LGBT

community” are non-LGBT-identified individuals and organizations that have
contributed to the quality of life of the city’s LGBT communities.

About
Dance for Life
Dance
for Life raises awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS care, prevention
and education, while promoting the art of dance in Chicago. Realizing that AIDS
had heavily affected the dance community, Dance
for Life was founded in 1992 as an inventive way for dancers and dance
companies, whose incomes do not normally allow for large donations, to be able
to contribute time, effort and badly needed funds for existing AIDS agencies.
Check us out online on the Dance for Life
website or on Facebook.

The nonprofit National Gay & Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame will
