MotorBall Returns to Detroit June 5th

motorball-detroit-circuit-party

Detroit isn’t necessarily on everyone’s radar as a gay summer dance destination, but a non-profit organization is changing that. MotorBall, back for its second year, kicks off LGBT Pride Month with a weekend of events June 5-7, 2015.
After a nearly 11 year hiatus, MotorBall was resurrected in 2014 for a 20th Anniversary celebration. With a limited budget and a small group of volunteers, MotorBall 2014 was a success, raising nearly $7,000 for Michigan AIDS Coalition (MAC). Thrilled with the results, MAC reached out to the founders of MotorBall, Geared For Life (GFL), and brought the event into MAC’s portfolio of fundraisers, which provide much needed funds for outreach, education, and prevention services in Michigan’s HIV/AIDS community.
MotorBall’s history is rich and spans over a decade. Originally created in 1994, the “GEAR Party,” which stood for “Generating Education, Awareness, and Respect,” was held at The Majestic Ballroom in Detroit. “The first party was so fun and went off without a hitch – even after two power surges blew the circuits at The Majestic,” says Tracy Hoffman, one of the founding members of Geared for Life.
The first event raised more than $15,000 for area HIV/AIDS organizations providing critical services in the height of the epidemic. The following years continued to raise funds – $200,000 in total – until the event was retired in 2005.
The parties, in their heyday, were held at various venues throughout Metro Detroit and brought in major DJs, entertainers, and out-of-town supporters. Centaur Music even produced three albums for MotorBall in its Party Groove lineup. MotorBall’s storied and proud history as one of the great circuit parties in the US and included performances by DJs Susan Morabito, Paulo, Tracy Young, Julian Marsh, Manny Lehman, Teri Bristol, Billy Carroll, Chuck Arida, the late-great BUC, Alyson Calagna, Maryalice, David Knapp, and so many more who all spun at the event.
The current organizers of MotorBall are a mix of alum from years past and some new faces.  Terry Ryan, CEO of MAC, says, “I’ve always cherished my memories and the friends I made at this event and am glad that we’ve been able to bring the MotorBall brand back.”
Eddie Mulak, MotorBall’s Event Director for 2015, remembers the first MotorBall and aims to bring the event back to its must-attend status. “Detroit it primed to host a world-class event for the LGBT community again. I’m proud to be entrusted with guiding this party back to a must-attend event.”
Joining the team again this year is Derek Zachariah, who originally became involved with Geared For Life and MotorBall twenty years ago. Asked to play a key role in last year’s Anniversary party, Zachariah also sits on the Board of AIDS Walk Detroit and is deeply involved with Michigan Greyhound Connection and other local non-profits. GFL founders and alum Tracy Hoffman and John Joanette join the team as consultants.
MotorBall kicks off in Detroit with its Opening Party 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, June 5 at Club Gold Coast with DJ Josh Karmin (Detroit/Toronto). MotorBall 2015 will be held from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at St Andrew’s Hall and The Shelter, featuring DJ Chris Spinazzola (Chicago), DJ Steve Dearborn (Detroit), DJ Lena (Detroit), and DJ Mike Trombley (Macho City/Detroit).  MotorBall is an Official After-Party of Motor City Pride. To purchase tickets, and more information, please visit www.MotorBall.org or www.MichiganAIDSCoalition.org.

Gay Queer Contra Dance Chicago April 25th

contra_dance_chicago-gay-queer
Queer Contra Dance Chicago will hold its next dance on Saturday, April 25 2015 from 6:00-9:00pm in the community hall at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square, located at 2649 N. Francisco Ave, Chicago, near the Blue Line Logan Square stop.

Contra dance is a form of folk dance, similar to square dancing, but with lines of dancers rather than squares. This dance will feature live music by Common Taters performing dance music from the British Isles. The caller will be Maggie Jo Saylor.

Admission to Queer Contra is a sliding scale of $ 0-10, payable at the door. No advance planning or experience is needed and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Everyone, gay, straight and in-between is welcome! Potluck snack and beverages encouraged. For more information, contact the new organizers Stephen Ulrich at scu@pobox.com and Das Janssen (mitsein9@gmail.com) or www.facebook.com/ContraChicago.

SCHEDULE FOR Saturday April 25:
6-6:30pm             LESSONS FOR NEWCOMERS
6:30-8:30pm         CONTRA DANCE FOR NEWCOMERS AND EXPERIENCED DANCERS
8:30-9pm             POTLUCK REFRESHMENTS

We think Contra Dancing is a great way to have fun, stay active physically, and connect socially. And we have some great people who help make this all happen. It’s a welcoming, diverse community and we hope you can join us.  Additionally, Pastor Erik Christensen, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Logan Square adds: “St. Luke’s firmly believes that music and all the arts build community across lines of difference by bringing people together in an environment of creativity, self-expression, and joy.  We’re proud to have queer contra dancing coming to St. Luke’s, and excited to see how we can be part of supporting a diverse, inclusive neighborhood.”

We organizers are currently making arrangements for a dance on May 30 as well, and will provide additional information on that as details become available.

MORE ABOUT CONTRA DANCE: Contra dance is a centuries-old New England folk dance tradition. It’s the rowdy red-headed stepchild of English country dance (the kind of dancing you see in Jane Austen movies). Contra dancing is done to live traditional fiddle music in a variety of styles, from lilting Celtic-inspired tunes to rollicking bluegrass. All dances are taught by a caller, who “calls out” instructions throughout the dance. Queer contra dance takes the traditional division of the dance into “gentlemen” and “ladies” and gives it a queer twist. Instead of gender roles, dancers choose whether or not to wear an armband, which determines their role. (If you’re curious, the “armband” role corresponds to the traditional gentleman’s or leader’s role, but there’s not much difference between the two roles.) The caller uses the term “armbands” or “bands” to refer to the dancers wearing armbands, and “barearms” or “bares” (no, not bears) to indicate those without armbands. LGBQ programs at CIMMfest 2015

2015 CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL MOVIES & MUSIC FESTIVAL

CIMMfest No. 7 TO ROLL OUT LGBQ PROGRAMMING

APRIL 16 – 19, 2015

The 7th Chicago International Movies & Music Festival (CIMMfest), the annual four-day showcase celebrating the inseparable connection between music and movies, is proud to announce the festival’s LGBQ programming include films The Dicks from Texas, Cakes da Killa: No Homo and a special video and music event Cruising TRACKS: a Radical Queer Video. For a complete lineup of confirmed films, musical acts and live scoring events for CIMMfest No. 7, visit http://cimmfest.org/.

CIMMfest’s queer film screenings and music event present documentaries, video art, short fictions and music videos. These presentations touch a wide array of topics: stretching notions of gender identity; kinship and sexuality; proper bodies and their organized functions while dealing with other social and political struggles such as the fight against HIV/AIDS, sexism, confinement, racism, and mental illness.

Thursday, April 16th         The Dicks from Texas (pictured)

The Dicks from Texas tells the story of the men, the myth and the music behind the band that defined Texas hardcore punk. Long before Austin made weirdness a civic virtue, The Dicks made it a cause. Three rawboned Marlboro Man types fronted by Gary Floyd, a fat queer with a penchant for fright wigs, this self-described “commie faggot band” helped put the Texas capital on the punk map in the early ’80s with anthems like “Dicks Hate the Police” and “Wheelchair Epidemic.”

7:00pm @ The Society for Arts, 1112 N Milwaukee Ave

A la carte tickets are $12

Friday, April 17th

CIMMfest’s Cruising Tracks – Radical Queer Video Program includes:

·         Queer Video Screening, videos & event curated by Rebecca Lavoie.

·         Live performance by Donzelle, Montreal’s Sassiest Rapper and her dancers; Douce Angoisse, provocative electronic musician backed by hypnotic disco/darkwave melodies.

·         Slo ‘Mo dance party: A throwback to old-school R&B, Slo ‘Mo seeks to unite people of all identities, bodies and expressions through soul music. Including the sounds of Anita Baker, Frank Ocean, Janet Jackson and more, Slo ‘Mo Dance Party is hosted by Kristen Kava with grooves by DJ Tess and Audio Jack of Slo ‘Mo.

8:00pm @ The Hideout Inn, 354 West Wabansia

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door and $5 for the dance party only

Saturday, April 18th

Cakes da Killa: No Homo (short doc) playing with feature documentary The Hip-Hop Fellow

The short doc follows Cakes Da Killa (born Rashard Bradshaw), a 22 year-old up and coming rapper who also happens to be an out and proud gay man. With provocative lyrics that explore sexuality and gender politics, he’s not your run of the mill rapper, but he just might be your new favorite.

9:00pm @ The Society for Arts, 1112 N Milwaukee Ave

A la carte tickets are $12

CIMMfest No. 7 takes place April 16-19, 2015 along the Milwaukee Avenue corridor – from Wicker Park to Logan Square – with satellite events in the West Loop, Pilsen and beyond. Chicago House THE TEASE Feb 28th

tease-strip-tease-chicago-house

the tease chicAGO STRIPPERS CHARITY

Nadine DuBois is a commanding addition to this year’s production of The Tease. Renowned for her masterful ability to transform shows into a “more cohesive and pure slice of burlesque,” DuBois will provide a “glamorous framework for The Tease‘s incredible cast of artists.”

Hailing from Minneapolis, DuBois laces a glimmer of sexuality into her Minnesota-nice demeanor. She brings experience performing throughout the Twin Cities in large theatrical productions such as Grown and Sexy PRIDE, which every year features a special guest from RuPaul’s Drag Race, and in big-stage shows that have toured across New Zealand and Australia with Chicago burlesque artists Jett Adore, Bazuka Joe and Ray Gunn. DuBois has also made appearances in venues such as Chicago’s Subterranean and Music Box Theatre.

For DuBois, burlesque is truly an innocent, fun and freeing experience. “When I’m on stage, it’s the most present I ever am.”

This love affair started one hot summer night in Minneapolis when DuBois walked past an unnamed bar. Inside, she saw mystic artists who looked like they truly belonged. Trained as a singer, DuBois sought the perfect platform from which to share her talent, but she had yet to find the right fit. On this warm night in 2003, Nadine DuBois fell in love.

From there grew the persona that DuBois describes as “comedic in a real way.” Opening shows with the question, Have you ever been to a burlesque show before?, DuBois channels the audience’s nervous energy into her comedy. She responds suggestively to those new to the art form, eager to pop the cherries of burlesque virgins around the world.

This month, DuBois will host The Tease. Tying together performances by aerialists, dancers, jugglers and contortionists, DuBois will provide the scaffolding for The Tease’s portrayal of the turmoil of love. As a fierce ally to the communities Chicago House serves, Nadine DuBois intends for her performance to “highlight and encourage the powerful compassion and immense resources that Chicago House provides for its clients.”

Two shows  7:30  and  10:30!!!  Saturday  Feb. 28th!

Buy tickets to this year’s production of The Tease on our website or by calling 773.248.5200 x 304.

Queer Ballroom and Tango at Center on Halsted

gay ballroom dancing chicago

Queer Ballroom and Tango Return
                                                   Inclusive Dance at All Levels
Monday nights this January at Center on Halsted have been buzzing with rhythm and beat. Individuals and couples of all identities have ventured to Center on Halsted to let loose and dance in a welcoming, diverse, and fun space.

(3656 North Halsted Street, Chicago, IL 60613)

“This month we’ve brought accessible Ballroom and Latin dancing to the LGBTQ community here in Chicago and will continue to do so throughout the year,” said Steve Nasshan, instructor and owner of Get on the Floor Dance Company, whom Center on Halsted collaborates with to bring these classes to the building.

“I have seen too many same-sex couples or LGBTQ individuals shy away from traditional dance instruction. Many feel as if others in the class wouldn’t accept them or that instructors would be uncomfortable teaching same gender pairs, for example, how to lead and follow,” said Steve. “Center on Halsted has created a really special space where everyone from beginners to experts can convene and dance with whomever they choose.”

Michael, a student this session, has seen tremendous growth in just a few weeks. “Before coming to the classes, I often felt clumsy and uncomfortable in my movements. Weekly dance at Center on Halsted has boosted both my self-confidence and esteem. I feel in control and elegant in a way I didn’t previously.”

“It’s an exciting time to offer these classes,” remarks Steve. “We’re seeing a lot of couples preparing for first dances at weddings and others who just want to gain confidence on the dance floor. It’s a true mark of how the LGBTQ community is growing.”

Interested in participating? Drop by on Monday evenings to see what all the heat is about, or sign up for the next 6 week session, beginning on February 16th, with a focus on Beginner Level Waltz and East Coast Swing.

All ability levels are welcome.

Reach out to Steve at 773-540-5901 or contact Lynnea Karlic, Director of Community & Cultural Programs at lkarlic@centeronhalsted.org for more information.

Looking for costume inspiration? Check out our Instagram @NeverlandParties, as we’ll be posting photos from our Mauricio Zapata photoshoot all month long leading up to the dance party.

PUSH Physical Theatre

push-physical-theatre-chicago

Seeing award winning PUSH Physical Theatre is like watching a live action-movie. This talented group of performers inspires awe with physical illusions and gravity-defying, dance-infused, acrobatic high-jinx.

A cross between fine art sculpture and “The Matrix,” PUSH Physical Theatre will express the power of the human body at Moraine Valley Community College on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m.

PUSH Physical Theatre is cool, athletic, entertaining, and impossible to resist. This theater of the body features performers who appear to manipulate time and space in a live environment. The performance is all about stories, the narratives of life played out with hope, strength and optimism. Experience PUSH to know the strength of the human soul.

“Our Physical Theatre is an art form created from borrowing,” said Darren Stevenson, founding director of PUSH Physical Theatre. “We have been inspired by the concepts and ideas of corporeal mime, modern dance, non-traditional partnering, and the areas of acting technique that relate to the use of the body as a tool of discovery; even gymnastics play a part. We attempt to create a true synergy between these theater forms.”

SNEAK  PEAK

PUSH’s unique form has transformed it into a national company that has performed all over England, the United States and Mexico, and has appeared on PBS and NPR.

The performers will defy gravity in the Fine and Performing Arts Center’s Dorothy Menker Theater, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $20 for students and seniors.
