Chicago House Film Night for TransLife Center Aug. 2nd
CHICAGO HOUSE has a new and exciting benefit night they are launching! This is going to a very special event!!
AWARD-WINNING HOLLYWOOD DIRECTORS/PRODUCERS ANDY AND LANA WACHOWSKI TO OPEN UP PRIVATE STUDIO FOR “TRANSREELIZATION” ON AUGUST 2
The Matrix series. V for Vendetta. Cloud Atlas. For years, Andy and Lana Wachowski, the award-winning directors and producers of these films, have kept their Hollywood secrets hidden from the general public. But on Saturday, Aug. 2, the sibling duo is thrilled to offer an exclusive opportunity to join them at their private, 20,000-square foot industrial movie production studio in Edgewater – all to benefit Chicago House’s TransLife Center.
The inaugural event, TransReelization: An Evening of Film at Kinowerks Studio, will give attendees the chance to enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a selection of films at the Wachowskis’ studio at 5645 N Ravenswood Avenue.
Kinowerks Studio is renowned for its “cleverly sustainable design elements and the best of green technology,” and is lined with Wachowski artifacts, trophies and memorabilia from their films.
“We are delighted to host this event supporting the TransLife Center,” Lana Wachowski said, “for a cause that’s near and dear to our hearts.”
Lana herself identifies as transgender, and over recent years she’s accepted numerous awards for her work pertaining to trans issues, including the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) Visibility Award in 2012.
“Invisibility is indivisible from visibility,” Wachowski said in her HRC acceptance speech. “For the transgender community this is not simply a philosophical conundrum – it can be the difference between life and death.”
VIP guests will have the opportunity for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the studio guided by Lana prior to the start of the event.
All guests will get a comprehensive look into trans* issues with a full selection of short films that address gender-related topics set to play beginning at 7 p.m. The films include I Am A Girl!, I’m Yours, Gender Games, Sisterhood, a trailer for MAJOR!, and an exclusive sneak preview of Black is Blue.
The TransLife Center, Chicago House’s newest initiative, which opened its doors in July 2013, provides comprehensive programming and support to transgender individuals that seek housing, health, legal and employment services.

Honey Bees Cause Disturbance at Chicago O’Hares Airport
I had no idea!
O’Hare Airport was buzzing Sunday and not just with returning Fourth of July travelers.
A swarm of honeybees clustered around a staircase railing outside United Airlines gate B7. As a precaution, United shut down gates B6, B7 and B8 and called in John Hansen, an experienced beekeeper who oversees the 75 beehives at the O’Hare apiary. ( I did not even know O’Hare had such a thing!) In May 2011, the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) installed an apiary of 28 beehives at O’Hare International Airport. With over 1 million bees, the apiary at O’Hare is the largest apiary at any airport in the world and the first major on-airport apiary in the U.S.

Chicagos Borris Powell and Kyle Thomas Partner for Fashion
LEADING FILM & FASHION ARTISTS PARTNER
This summer, a momentous partnership will shake LGBT entertainment and fashion.
Nationally respected fashion designer, Borris Powell, on the cusp of launching a brand new men’s line, has chosen rising star film director/producer, Kyle Thomas, as the face of his anticipated “Freedom” line.
The line, which is slated to launch in Fall 2014, features a distinctly gentlemanly style, which is a core value both artists identify within their brands. “One chooses to be a gentleman. It takes style, sophistication, manners, and confidence to pull that off. And my new line harbors exactly that, with clean lines and quality craftsmanship. I want men to wear my clothes and feel the gentleman within them come alive,” Powell says, of his new line. “We’ve been producing several editorials and we can’t wait to release them.”
Kyle Thomas, who is producing and directing the highly anticipated upcoming show, SEX + LOVE, is honored to partner with Powell. “There’s a huge shift in culture with marriage being granted to LGBT individuals, and Borris and I have had long conversations about how there’s a desire within gay culture to focus less on the raw sexuality of past decades and to now be courted by a gentleman. Being a gentleman is inherently classic. We grew up on Disney films. It doesn’t matter whether you’re straight or gay, being a gentleman is sexy,” Thomas states.
“Borris saw the first cuts of SEX + LOVE and instantly related with the characters, themes, and struggles inherent in the story. The series documents how technology has created a broken road to romance for many of us. In a world with so many different viewpoints on love and sex, and with a cornucopia of options at your fingertips via social media, how does one find what one is looking for?” Thomas says of the series. “SEX + LOVE captures that struggle, that comedy, and that heartbreak.”
With both of their careers reaching new levels of success and many exciting things in development for the coming months and year, the two believe their partnership in film and fashion will be able to touch a wider audience. “It’s about the art and the way that we can make people feel. We want to give people that sense of glamour and romance, whether it be for three hours when she’s in my gown or he’s in my suit,” Powell said. “Or for the brief time to watch an episode,” Thomas added. “We all want that romance and fantasy, and those things exist here and now. You just have to believe in them once again.”
