Best Gay Dining in Chicago Boystown @ Taverna 750

Taverna750 chicago gay

If you live here, I am sure you  know all about Taverna 750. For the LGBT visitor, sometimes you need to venture off Halsted to find our hidden gems. Some of our  favorite, neighborhood hotspots are  tucked away, just slightly off the gay-beaten path.

Taverna 750 is one of the newest, brightest and now busiest restaurants in Boystown. After a near tear-down renovation of the property at 750 West Cornelia, a true gem of an establishment emerged just a stone throws away from the main gay drag. Since it’s opening in 2011, critics have consistently voted Taverna750 such accolades as Best Italian Restaurant, Best Hidden Gem, Best Date Restaurant, Best Brunch and Best Sidewalk Café in Boystown Chicago.  Taverna 750 is a blend of old-school, family recipes and Italian hospitality perfectly mixed with a today’s metropolitan flair and understanding of distinctive cuisine, crafted cocktails, décor and ambiance.

Owner Paul D. Cannella credits much of his inspiration to his Grandfather and Uncle’s classic Italian restaurant. Chicagoan’s enjoyed the downtown spot on Grand Avenue for several decades.  Paul and his talented team tweak family recipes to a new culinary perfection and locals agree the tastes and flavors are spot on.  Cannella does not prefer labeling Taverna750 as a tapas restaurant. It quickly becomes clear as plates arrive that the portions served are larger than one usually receives at many small plate eateries.  The plate sharing and placing dishes in the center of the table has been encouraged by staff and embraced by guests. “I think because everyone wants to sample and try as much as possible, and that’s a good thing, plenty of sharing goes on here!” says Cannela.

taverna 750 gay restaurant

Expect delicious, fresh and unexpected nightly food and drink temptations.  Regular house staples and crafted cocktails change seasonally.  Don’t expect food, wine and cocktail prices to break the bank! A meal enjoyed here is as affordable as memorable.  Saturday and Sunday offer weekend Champagne and Martini Brunch packages for $24-$27 that are hugely popular. The Martini Brunch includes two delicious courses, two 750 Specialty Martinis and LOTS of Champagne!  Brunch is served Saturday 11am-2pm and Sunday 11am-3pm. Dinner is served nightly from 6pm-11pm, Midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.  Reservations are always highly suggested.

Everyone seems to agree, the food, the drinks, the decor and the staff are terrific. Check out all the positive YELP! reviews and be sure to add Taverna750 as a must-visit restaurant when in Boystown.  TAVERNA   750

Pssst….Patio Season is just around the corner and Taverna has one the most lush patios,  perfect for al fresco dining!

Cold Chicago Weather Could Mean Plumbing Issues

It’s  Here!

The arrival of the winter season and cold weather  = potential plumbing problems in our homes and apartments. Whether you rent or own, you can have Frigid morning showers, frozen or cracked pipes, broken radiators, flooding, and leaks are just a few of the many unwanted plumbing issues brought on by  winter weather.

Fortunately there are things that you can do to prevent or minimize the likelihood of these winter plumbing mishaps.
Preventing Clogged Drains: Once a week, treat your sink and bathtub drains to this quick, safe and environmentally-friendly cleaning process. Make up a mixture of 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda, and 1/4 cup cream of tartar. Pour equal amounts into your various drains and follow it with 2 cups of boiling water for each drain. Or buy something like Bio Clean. It’s a blend of bacteria and enzymes.Within an hour after pouring the bacteria into the drain, the bacteria
begin to eat their way into the waste that has accumulated on the sides
and top of the drain pipe. Cool!
Pipe Insulation: This is more for home owners of condo owners in small buildings. Use foam padding sleeves or special insulating tape to guard your pipes (both hot water and cold water) against freezing. Any exposed pipe or plumbing fixtures should be kept warm with space heaters (lamps) from a safe distance. Every few days, check out pipes in basements or little used areas of the house to make sure no ice or frost is accumulating or cracks developing.
Running Water: Be sure to run water from every valve in your house at regular intervals throughout the winter.  This will prevent freezing.
Be Careful with Holiday Cooking: Cooking grease and oils put a real strain on drains, pipes and garbage disposals.  Grease and oil are more likely to collect and clog when your plumbing is colder, so do your best NOT pour down the drain. Also, refrain from putting hard to grind objects or stringy substances down into the disposal. Always run cold water through the disposal for at least 15 seconds before and after each use. Be sure to turn the disposal on before filling it with food debris.
Spread Showers Throughout the Day: At least 10 minute intervals between showers is optimal to maintain hot water and proper pressure. You may also want to turn up the water heater during the cold season as well; to prevent burns, do not put it above 125 degrees Fahrenheit.
If Your Indoor Faucets Freeze:
Leave the cabinet doors under the faucets open so that they can get more heat.
If it gets intensely cold, run a little bit of water from each valve in the house each day. Let the water trickle very slowly into the sink.
Heat every room of your home, not just a few rooms. Allow warm air to circulate freely throughout your house.

Boystown and Gay-borhood Happenings New Year’s Eve Chicago 2012

“What Are You Doing  New Year’s Eve?”

Undisputedly, no other holiday evening offers more event happening choices than New Year’s Eve!  Whether you’re a lover or a hater or just indifferent, fact is New Year’s Eve returns every December 31st.

For Michael and I, unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas, our choices of who and where we spend New Year’s Eve with is not based on traditions (other than consuming an exorbitant amount of alcohol), but instead, what were going to do that night to celebrate is based on random criteria each year.

Today, we are still uncommitted to where exactly you’ll find us throughout the night, but we have narrowed or choices and want to share our recommended options with you (below list in alphabetical order).

Bonjonos Pizzeria: Sometimes the best New Year’s Eve simply requires having an amazing thin crust pizza and some buffalo wings, and staying in to watch the ball drop!   Our favorite in Chicago, delivered to your doorstop and you can wash your edible indulgence down with plenty of your favorite elixir(s) of choice while ringing in the New Year.

Bonjono’s Pizza opened in 1996 at 4185 North Clarendon and Buena Avenue with a plan to make the best pizza, pasta and sandwiches in the neighborhood.  The idea was to make everything as fresh as possible, crusts made by hand on site daily, sausage, pasta sauces, salad dressings and soup are also made from scratch. Owner Craig says “We think our customers appreciate our extra efforts and while not all menu items can be made in house, you can be assured that we only buy top quality ingredients and add our own special touches to them.”

Trust us as loyal customers of 13 years, they’ve stayed true to their original plan since opening.  Our standing order with Bonjono’s is: a large, thin crust Margherita pizza with fresh tomato, basil and grilled chicken added with a couple side orders of buffalo wings with both ranch and blue cheese dressing sides-delicious!  HEAVEN!

Bojono’s Pizzeria    4185 North Clarendon    773.404.9700

Delivery: from Bryn Mawr to Webster; from the lake west to Ashland.
Open daily from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM
last pizza order 9:45,  last delivery order 9:45

Cocktail
3359 North Halsted Street.  Cocktail is one of the sexiest, most inviting, playful upscale bars and restaurants on the Boystown strip, less any attitude! Cocktail’s two gorgeous bars feature black crystal chandeliers, onyx-lit bar tops and pay homage to our favorite French Champagne, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin’s Brut Yellow Label available by the glass or a full or 1/2 bottle everyday!

Cocktail is the perfect place to sip sinful libations, especially near the front window to enjoy all the familiar and friendly faces passing by Halsted and Roscoe, enjoy great food and converse with friends old and new, or groove to the DJ’s beats while drooling over their world-class go-go boys bumping and grinding!

As you can see on New Year’s Eve at Cocktail expect doors open at 7pm with Hostess Cyon Flare, sexy sounds of REDUX, champagne toast at midnight and of course sexy go-go boys dancing up a storm!

Downtown Bar – 440 S. State Street. We’re so glad this place re-opened. Once the Gentry, then a straight bar for a short time, Downtown Bar and Lounge is now here to stay!   I love the layout , because there nooks and crannies and want private space with somesome or you can join the gang downstairs or up at the big bar.  Brian has recently done remodeling and repainting to create even more lounge spaces.

$6 stoli cocktails all night and NO COVER.

elixir Lounge 3452 North Halsted Street.  For someone who “less is more” when it comes to sports bars, it was so refreshing to learn that when Elixir opened it was not a sports bar!!!

More and more, Michael and I actually prefer to go into and enjoy a place with no TV’s at all! When were out and about town were looking to get caught up with friends and make new ones. Not watch TV. Nothing more annoying than music too loud or so many TV’s its a struggle to talk to the person next to you.

I would definitely describe Elixir as upscale and friendly, the kind of place were proud to take our parents visiting us this week and sit and visit over a nice stiff cocktail! Be prepared, their specialty cocktail list, along with prohibition era classics, might put a little hair on Mama’s chest New Year’s Eve at elixir Lounge we think is a great deal (they would definitely lose money on us) $50 is all that is asked for an open Premium bar and light hor d’oeuvres from 10pm -1am. As you can imagine, it is an extremely smaller space than many, so tickets very limited, not a bad thing at all, so contact an elixir staff member and get your ticket!

HYDRATE – 3458 North Halsted Street.  NYE 2013 at Hydrate! PREMIUM OPEN BAR!The Ultimate NYE Dance Party is here!

Don’t delay! Buy your tickets today! This event sells out every year!

NYE at Hydrate includes a premium hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres from 8pm
to 11pm, champagne toast at Midnight, and party favors for every
guest!!!

General Admission Tickets are only $30 before 12.15.2012!! $35 if purchased before 12.31.2012!

$50 VIP Tickets include all of the above plus in and out privileges all night long!!! Don’t get stuck out in the cold!

DJ Laura B spins from 8 till midnight
Greg Drescher finished out the night till 4 AM…

Hosted by Sorraya Dash!!

NEXT STOP:  Established in 1996 by a father and his two sons, the original El Mariachi at 3420 North Broadway and Roscoe (still in business today) is a quaint, but small 10-table restaurant! Again, I’m sure it was the first Mexican restaurant Michael and I ate at when we first moved to Chicago in 2001.

El Mariachi grew in popularity over the years due to their commitment to only serving top quality, authentic, mostly family recipes, traditional dishes and the best margaritas made with fresh squeezed lime juice.

At the newest location opened in 2010, El Mariachi Tequila Bar & Grill at 3906 North Broaway and West Sheridan, you’ll find everything you came to love and expect at their original restaurant plus SO MUCH MORE!

No longer prohibited by lack of space, the new restaurant has a much bigger menu, fresh tableside guacamole that is made to order and an extensive selection of over 175 tequilas! (all 100% Blue Agave). This makes it the biggest tequila bar in Chicago!

In October of this year, their newest endeavor opened to rave reviews: Revolucion Mexican Steakhouse. 3443 N. Broadway.   So take your pick or mix and match.
EL MARIACHI will have  2 seatings for a  fabulous 3 course pre-fix menu ($30.00 per person)  ( regular menu will also be available on new years eve) * 6 pm and 8 pm seatings available.  773-549-2932

After Party At Revolucion Steakhouse...$60 Drink package from 11:00 pm to 2:00 a.m. which includes: Unlimited margaritas, sangria, house wine, selected beer, appertizer buffet
served through out the evening with party favors and champagne toast at midnight  Reservations are HIGHLY recommended 773-661-9894.

Roscoe’s Tavern  3356  N. Hasted . A boystown favorite! I love this place. As always, never disappointed in the music. Crowd is always friendly. I always meet new people here. Great dance floor. And fantastic pitchers of unlimited flavors of  specialty drinks.

Thinning Hair …and Rene Furterer Treatment at Ambra Spa in Chicago

I was getting my hair cut a few weeks ago and my stylist, who has cut my hair for a couple years, mentioned how thin my hair was getting on top. I guess I hadn’t noticed. I am 6’3″  and don’t really see the top of my head in the mirror.

So I called Ambra Salon and Spa – where I had went  last year for an amazing facial  and the BEST eyebrow shaping in Chicago (by Didi Ayala) I have ever had!

Back to my hair. I knew they had a great salon and wonderful European skin and hair products. So I called and talked with Vicki, a specialist who was trained in Paris under the guidance of the Rene Furterer company.  She booked me an appointment to come in.

“It’s never too late to start treating your hair
,” she explained. “In France, they have young children, boys and girls start treating their hair at about 8-9 years old! But as long as you have some hair, you can definitely slow down the loss process and possibly still stimulate new growth.”

She analyzed my hair then proceeded to give me a scalp massage and treatment using this amazing  Complexe 5, made for thinning hair. The Furterer company  use a lot of plant extracts and essential oils. These  help stimulate hair growth.  It smells and feels amazing! Then I sat under heat for about 10 minutes, and was washed out using Furterer’s  Forticea Stimulating Shampoo. More essential oils and plant peptides to help restore hair.

Treatments can be done at home. Of course, it’s not quite the same.  But  I purchased both the the Complexe 5 oil and Forticea Shampoo- and have been doing the process about once a week.  My hair feels  amazing afterwords! I have only been using it about 3 weeks- so it is too early to see results. But I am confident – the Furterer company has been around for 50 years. They are known all over Europe for their hair and scalp products. (*sidenote- when my  75 year old Mother was in town for the holidays, I got her hooked on the products and purchased at set also from Ambra.)

Ambra Salon and European Spa has several great product lines from Europe that are hard to find here in Chicago.  It’s a cosmetic shoppers paradise!  Next on my list to try is Biodroga skin care. From Baden-Baden, Germany, Biodroga has been around since the 1950’s. They have everything from repair formulas to fix skin, to anti time formulas to slow down the aging process. They have a complete line for men and everything is made in Baden-Baden, known for their amazing thermal baths.

A trip to Ambra Salon and European Spa  downtown is a MUST!

Best Plumbers in Chicago That We have Found

BEST  GAY CHICAGO  RECOMMENDS….

A  few  months  ago we needed  a  plumber ~ UGH, big sigh, we hate having to find contractors for anything… the drama, the unknown expense and the crazy service charges and fees when you don’t know the lingo and whether or not you’re simply being ripped off. It’s hard to find good honest mechanics and contractors.

We needed and wanted   a new  kitchen sink  installed  to replace  a really old one we hated and timely enough, our aging toilet was acting up and we decided to replace it as well and  we were going to be  “green”  and get a dual-flush, environmentally-friendly  low  water usage toilet as a replacement.

We were flooded with memories… unfortunately, BAD MEMORIES of plumbers past!  About 10 years ago,  we had to hire a plumber to replace a hot water tank in our home. The guy   had given us “an estimate”  that seemed reasonable compared to 2 other plumbing contractors, but afterward, the job then allegedly “took longer” than he thought, so the final bill was  $250  more than the original estimate.

Plus he was messy and we are sort of clean freaks!  I had to do some major clean up after he left. Neat and tidy are not two words that are often associated with plumbers, or any contractor for that matter. In fact, many drive trucks up on your driveway leaking oil, leave  supply packaging lying around your house, and drag who knows what into your home on their shoes! And can I just say, although it is so stereotypical, most of the time, I really do not care to see a service workers butt crack hanging out of their pants.

Fast forward back to present. Late last summer we had met the  Michael J. Goode, the owner  from Goode Plumbing at an LGBT Business Expo at The Center on Halsted.  Thank goodness we had tossed Mike’s business card in one of our business card piles and easily found it!

We remembered Mike and his colleague, Jeff looked real professional in their uniforms (dark blue oxfords with company logo and khaki pants), were extremely friendly and seemed very knowledgeable in the few minutes we had chatted. So we had Goode Plumbing came out to our condo, give us a price quote, not an estimate, and again they seemed  very professional and the type of contractors you could trust and were worth hiring.  My partner wanted to get a second estimate, just for comparison, and so we did. The Goode Plumbing quote was better, and  we hired them to do the work.

Mike Goode  says, “We are really committed to providing the highest quality service in the industry. All of our work is done to a standard that we are consistently raising.

We make sure all of our technicians are polite, educated and complete extensive in-house training.  Service and quality are so important. I promise to do my absolute best to ensure that  a client’s  experience with us is excellent. We don’t just promise you the best – I truly want to deliver that for a client.

Our claim of striving to be the best and to give you the best service in the industry is backed by our commitment to on going training, and by giving  the best warranty in the business-if it fails because of the way we installed it, we’ll take care of it for as long as the building we put it in is standing.

We will sell and install only excellent quality parts, products and materials.
We believe in the products that we sell by backing them not only by their own warranty , but ours as well: labor is covered too (not just the parts!) and for a minimum of two years.”

They treat your home and property as if it were their own, leaving nothing behind but an outstanding plumbing job and your complete satisfaction. They even wear shoe covers/footies  in your home.

I can honestly bestow the Best Gay Chicago 5 Pink Crowns Award to Goode Plumbing!

My other concern when hiring “contractors” are that  many are no more than  “handy-men”. They are not specialists or have  limited knowledge in specific areas.

Goode Plumbing  is not one of these  “fix-it”  guys who  was  “handy”  and got into  plumbing.  Owner Mike Goode has 17 years  experience and Mike has completed an apprenticeship under a service plumber who owned a plumbing company and had 30 years of experience.

With all the talk about the environment and GREEN,  Goode plumbing is a leader in those new technologies and products and Mike is currently going through a state certification process to be licensed as a GREEN  plumber here in Illinois.

“At Goode Plumbing, we are continuously working to make our company more ecologically friendly. We have available, and encourage clients to ask about our high efficiency water heaters, on-demand water heaters, on-demand water faucets and dual flush toilets. We now use VOX chemicals, including PVC cement and primer. We recycle all cardboard and plastic packaging and all metals. And, our Sprinter diesel vans and restored Volkswagen Vans (modified with emissions controls!) average 20-25 mpg vs. the typical plumbing truck which averages 8-12 mpg. We  continue to make changes to our company that aid in the protection and preservation of the environment.

We offer Rinnai tankless water heaters,  Eternal Hybrid water heaters, A.O. Smith Vertex water condensing water heaters, and Bradford White storage water heaters. There are a number of alternatives to large, inefficient units that can save you money, give you more floor space, and cause less damage to the earth. There are also a number of rebates and credits available for the selection of some energy  efficient units.”

So next time you need a plumber – Don’t  Panic!
Take our advice  and  call  GOODE PLUMBING!
They also have an outstanding history of happy customers,
and very high ratings  with Angies List!

UBER New Chicago Black Car Service Taxi

Going to a nice party and you’re all dressed up…and you have to crawl into a dirty smelly yellow cab? ICK!

What about fighting for a cab on a busy Saturday night? How fun is that? Especially if it is freezing cold outside?!

Personal car service has arrived in Chicago!  UBER.  Everyone’s private driver. A black car service, on demand, from your phone!  What could be easier? While most black car or executive car services require a 24 hour advanced notice, this is on demand.

For years I have used black car services in New York City. But still, you usually need to give some kind of advance notice.

Now you can request a car from any mobile phone—text message, iPhone and Android apps. Uber will send the nearest driver to pick you up, and text message you an estimated arrival time. Cars usually arrive within 5-10 minutes. You can even track your driver right from  your phone.

Your licensed professional driver will park curbside in a sleek black car. Uber will text you again when the car arrives. Hop in the car, tell the driver your destination and you’ll be on your way.

The fee’s are automatically charged to your credit card on file, and  tip is included.  No fuss with money and change. It is the law in Chicago, a cab driver MUST take your credit card. But how many times do they grumble or say their machine is broken?!

We’re changing the way people are getting around by offering a convenient, cashless, and stylish on demand car request service from your mobile phone.”

Sign up with Uber.com and download the app. It’s that easy!

Sign up at UBER  or by downloading the app and inputting “BESTGAY”. These special promo codes for our readers will get your $10 off your first ride.

Sure it’s a few dollars more than a cab. But it’s worth it to arrive in style and comfort. For me, I found it most economical to ride from Boystown to downtown for events, via Lake Shore Drive.  If the cars have to cut  through the city, and zig zag in traffic, the bill can get a little higher. But it’s about convenience. And a luxury ride.

Uber takes GPS data from your ride and charges for distance or time depending on your speed. When your Uber is traveling over 11mph, they charge a distance fee. When your Uber is traveling at or below 11mph, they charge a time fee. There is never  extra charges for late night rides, weekend rides, extra passengers, or luggage fees, it’s always the same rate.

“We carefully select which fleet partners we work with and ensure that they have all the proper licensing. We’ve also implemented a rating system for drivers. If his or her rating goes beneath a certain level, we will no longer do business with them. We’re careful to maintain a standard of only doing business with quality, licensed drivers.

When Uber was started it was a service used by us and our friends. We will never allow our friends to be put into an uncomfortable or dangerous situation because of our service.  One of the most important points about Uber service is to get away from those types of situations when looking for transportation around the city.

Currently “UBER – Your Private Driver” in 7 cities:
San Francisco, NYC, Seattle, Boston, Washington, DC, Paris   and now  Chicago!

Ambra Salon and European Spa Voted Best in Chicago!

40.  There!

I said it.
 I turned  40, so what?!

Isn’t 40 the new 30?!

Most gay men are vain. Admit it. You know who you are. We are obsessed with body image, good looks  and a youthful appearance. Luckily my mother always preached Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!  And I did. Plus I worked in Skin Care for Neiman Marcus for 2 years, so I know there are many products out there that can in fact slow down the hands of time.

The attitude that skin care is a feminine pursuit has changed. More and more men are becoming concerned with good grooming and health on appearance. Straight men included.

Men need to care for their skin no less than women do. They tend to work under harsher conditions and to get greater exposure to pollution.

I have one word for you….PREVENTION.   I am not a novice when it comes to facials and skincare. I’ve been diligent in taking care of myself for more than 10 years. I am  glad when people comment on how clear, luminous and smooth my complexion is. When it comes to skincare, I don’t go for a bargain. I go for quality. I learned that in this country, bargain and quality almost never coincide. So, for me, when I pay for quality, I am making an investment that is going to translate into great value later on.

When I go for a facial, I look for precision in removing all of the junk out of my face in a manner that is clean and gentle. What matters is that my skin remains clear of blemishes, luminous, well hydrated and firm.  When I leave my facial, I want to be able to go about my business without being red from inflammation.

A few months ago I discovered Ambra Salon and European Spa downtown. 8000 sq. ft. facility with  7 spa treatment rooms, 1 couples treatment room, 14 styling stations, 9 manicure stations, 6 pedicure stations and a spray tan room.

Thirteen years ago I had a special plan in mind—to provide clients with a refuge from stresses of everyday life.” says owner Marie Bartkova, who is originally from Prague. “We opened in 1998 on N. Rush St. with 2 manicure stations, 3 facial rooms, 2 massage rooms and 2 portable pedicure stations.

At Ambra Salon and European Spa, these moments happen every day. Come see why their clients say they are  the best in Chicago!

Preventative Chiropractic Care Can Save You Back and Neck Pains

No matter what causes back pain, the fact is it HURTS! Back aches are the number 2 cause of all doctors’ visits. Headaches are number 1. And sometimes the two go together!

Back pain affects 80% of Americans at some time in their lives. It comes in many forms, from lower back pain, middle back pain, or upper back pain to low back pain with sciatica. Common back pain causes include nerve and muscular problems, degenerative disc disease, and arthritis. Many people find relief from symptoms of back pain with pain medication or pain killers.

Some will see a Chiropractor. Like I did recently!  And Dr. Dale Zuehlke at Greater Chicago Chiropractic gave me an education! After several visits he was able to re-balance  my spine through chiropractic adjustments,  restoring my  movement and proprioception, but I learned that if I keep my body in proper alignment, by way of regular visits, I could avoid pain altogether.  You know the saying, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now I see him about 4-6 weeks, to keep my body “tuned up”.

From its very beginnings, chiropractic has been concerned with improving people’s quality of life by helping strive towards optimum wellness.

Wellness care or preventative care (also written as preventive care) is designed to promote health based on the whole person’s optimal functioning and thereby minimize the future occurrences of impairment or illness.

Preventative chiropractic care or maintenance care is designed to help an already healthy and problem-free patient maintain an optimally healthy state whilst helping to prevent any acute or chronic problem from appearing at all.

Most people have experienced back pain sometime in their life. The causes of back pain are numerous; some are self-inflicted due to a lifetime of bad habits. Other back pain causes include accidents, muscle strains, and sports injuries. Although the causes may be different, most often they share the same symptoms. – THE SECRET is to prevent it, with Chriropractic Care!

We highly recommend  Greater Chicago Chiropractic

Absolutely the Best Segway Tours in Chicago

SUMMER IS  IN FULL SWING  – AND THE WEATHER HAS BEEN GORGEOUS (for the most part) here in Chicago!  And what better way to see the city than on a SEGWAY?!

Did you know?? You can cover about 7-8 MILES of the city, sightseeing in about 2 hours?

Riding the Segway  feels like nothing you’ve ever experienced because there’s never been anything like it. Step on and your instinct will be to steady yourself, as you would on anything with two wheels.

Almost immediately you’ll realize that the Segway  is balancing for you, almost like it has become an extension of you. Just lean forward a little and you’ll see that the Segway  isn’t moving you on its own; it’s moving in response to you and what you tell it to do. It all feels natural and really cool.

The Segway  uses LeanSteer™ Technology to move you from Point A to B. Gently move the LeanSteer frame and handlebar left or right in the direction you want to travel and feel the machine respond almost instantly.

The Segway  balances by using five micro-machined angular rate sensors and two accelerometers that sense the changing terrain and your body position at 100 times per second.

But enough about the mechanics.  I have rode on several tours with Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours   And it was  a great tour and experience!

The owners of the company have over 50 years of combined experience in the hospitality industry, having owned and operated some of the most successful, recognized and reputable restaurants and companies in the Chicagoland area. When starting Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours it was clear that they wanted to create that same memorable service, and to leave visitors with a wonderful impression of Chicago.

Whether you have lived here all of your life – or just moved here –  riding and touring a Segway in Chicago, you learn SO MUCH!   The Segway itself is only one part of the total touring experience. “We believe that your tour guide will have the biggest impact on your experience. At the risk of bragging, we have the best guides in the business, bar none. That’s because we only hire the best. They have undergone extensive Segway certification training. They have to be professional, courteous, and articulate. So whether the group is comprised of teens, grandmas, or corporate execs, our guides can connect with everyone.” says owner Timmie McGuire Cortina.

They offer several different tours and those can change with the season, and the weather. We recently took the 8 mile / 2 hour Museum Campus tour. Before you can go on a tour, you have to watch a short safety film, then there is a short “class” learning session. But it’s real easy.

With Summer reaching the half way point, get your butt out there and check it out! It’s a fantastic fun time!!

Absolutely Chicago Segways  is located right near Millenium Park at 337 E. Randolph.
If you drive downtown and tour with them, you can park with them for $10 for the day.

Beyond the Civil Union License…Celebrate Your Union with a Party

“It has been a long journey here, and for all of you entering into civil unions today, you have a long and fruitful journey ahead,”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the crowd yesterday as the first cermonies began being held!.

Illinois is the sixth state to allow civil unions or their equivalent, which provide same-sex or opposite-sex couples the same state-level rights as married couples. Wednesday was the first day couples could get civil union licenses and, as with marriage, there is a one-day waiting period before a ceremony can be held.

“This is indeed a historic day, a special day that all of us in the land of Lincoln can celebrate,” Governor Quinn said. “There are all kinds of families in Illinois, but we are all the family of Illinois.”

So you want to have a Civil Union?!

Step One –  register with Cook County –
And then  you have a judge Civil Union-ize you.

Step Two – Do you want more of a formal
                                      ceremony for family and friends?

You will need an officiant. Meet Reverend Vito Anthony!  “My role as celebrant is to offer a non-judgmental, non-denominational, spiritual ceremony for you and your loved ones, for any variety of momentous occasions in your life. As the pages turn with every new chapter in your life-whether it be one of joy or sorrow-it is equally important to mark your new chapters with a dignified ceremony. It is my goal to provide you with a ceremony that will not only fit your exact needs, but also to conduct a unique and memorable ceremony to help you begin your journey, whether in grief or happiness. –  I am VERY EXCITED that the State of Illinois is offering Civil Unions to the LGBT Community!”

Best Bike Tours in Chicago! Bobbys Bike Hike

Since the advent of the bicycle in the 1860s, Chicago has been distinguished as one of the premier cycling locations in the United States, with such public cycling destinations as Grant Park, Burnham Park and the Chicago Park District’s Lakefront Trail.

Chicago has been  named a cycling capital of the United States by several magazines. The City of Chicago has achieved this goal by investing in bicycling infrastructure and promoting education, awareness and advocacy.

Bicycles arrived in Chicago in the 1860s. By 1900, there were 54 bicycle clubs with more than 10,000 members, and it has been growing every year.

Mayor Richard J. Daley, was a huge supporter of bicycling. When he was inaugurated, the city had a limited number of bike paths. By the 1970s, Daley’s administration had built a large network of lakefront bike paths, bicycle lanes on the road, a 34-mile (55 km) bicycle route and rush-hour bicycle lanes on Clark Street and Dearborn Street.

Chicago currently has more than 110 miles of on-street bike lanes, more than 30 miles of marked shared lanes, many miles of off-street paths (including the 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail), more than 12,000 bike racks, and sheltered, high-capacity, bike parking areas at many CTA rail stations. Daley has said, “My goal is to make the City of Chicago the most bicycle-friendly city in the U.S.”

Since the summer of 2002,
Bobby’s Bike Hike has offered a unique perspective on the sights and attractions of Chicago, incorporating quality information, group interaction, and most of all, fun.

“We provide you a cool, cruiser style bicycle and riders of all ages and fitness levels will find our relaxed-pace tours enjoyable. Bobby’s hand-selected guides make brief stops at Chicago’s most popular sights, providing light-hearted commentary that will keep you entertained and “in the know.”

You’ll see our favorite jaw-dropping vantage points of the scintillating skyline.

And NEW THIS YEAR – the  Bikes, Bites  Brew  tour – Working up an appetite won’t be a problem on this tour! We’ll be sampling from each of Chicago’s four favorite food groups — pizza, hot dogs, cupcakes and beer. You’ll learn the history behind the foods and also get a taste for some of Chicago’s most popular neighborhoods as we cruise through Wrigleyville, Gold Coast, Old Town, Lakeview and Lincoln Park.

Best Underwear and Swimsuits for Men in Chicago is at EGOIST

The beaches in Chicago officially open this weekend…but I am not sure if the weather is going to cooperate! This is Chicago, after all.  Regardless, beach season is upon us and do you have a fabulous new swimsuit to wear to Hollywood beach??

EGOIST Underwear has ALL OF MY FAVORITE brands of underwear  and now  has lots of hot new styles of swimsuits in stock!

Egoist Underwear offers you the finest, coolest premium male underwear from all over the world. MANY BRANDS you will find NOWHERE else!  And it’s more than underwear.  Cool tanks and t’s plus an amazing collection of swimsuits making it THE BEST of GAY CHICAGO!

We think that underwear says a lot about the owner’s personality. That is why on our shelves you will find a great selection of one tone classic underwear as well as a large range of colorful, sexy prints with edgy graphics and eye-catching styles. Egoist Underwear gives you the opportunity to touch and see the products yourself instead of having to choose from a picture only. After all, this is your package we are talking about!

Egoist Underwear offers a wide selection of men’s underwear (bikini, brief, pouch, boxer brief, long boxer brief, g-string, jock strap, thong and mesh), men’s enhancing underwear, men’s swimwear (board shorts, boy shorts, square cuts, bikinis, euro cut trunks and Brazilian cut trunks) as well as short and long sleeve t-shirts, v-necks, tank tops, shorts, designer sleepwear and accessories. We specialize in brands that cannot be found at department stores and shopping malls. At our boutique, you will find eco-friendly products, like underwear by Obviously, and exclusive brands that you will not find anywhere else in Chicago, like Cocksox and 2eros (Australia), Skmpeez (Canada), Gigo (Colombia) or XTG (Spain). “

Personally, I have never been a fan of the knee length board shorts!  I wanna see what he’s got, OK?  And at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week this year they actually discussed fashion trends in mens swimsuits for this year. I know what you’re thinking: there are no fashion trends in men’s swimsuits. But this year, there is ONE; Men will show more leg this year.

Aside from a strong showing of retro-looking swim trunks,  board shorts are rising to volleyball short length (according to that old adage about hemlines and the economy, this should herald a recovery from The Great Recession).

The fashion-forward customer will quickly embrace the thigh-grazing looks as soon as they hit store shelves this month. Already slimmer silhouettes  are quietly replacing the baggier below-the-knee styles in retail…well, on-the-trend retail.

Also look for: Americana plaids; solids with color blocking; neon hues; glossy finishes and vintage prints.

SYLVESTER, the owner of EGOIST says, “we’ve been selling lots of square cuts and trunks and right now selection of those is the biggest in my store. Hot this season are the Brazilian style trunks with no pouch – Skmpeez offers them too. Plaid is big, as usual.  As far as brands go, Skmpeez and Pistol Pete rule!”

When it comes to gay men’s underwear and swimwear – there are only two requirements–they have to look great and they have to make you look great. Today’s fashion undergarments come in more styles, colors and patterns than you can possibly imagine, and that’s exactly what you need to show off your stuff. There’s a lot of competition on the gay scene, and you can’t afford to let your goods fade into the background.

Egoist Underwear
is located at 3706 N Halsted St, Chicago IL 60613.
You can also shop and buy online.

From Australia to Chicago!  Only at Egoist.

Male premium underwear & swimwear in Chicago. Andrew Christian, Timoteo, Cocksox, Pistol Pete, 2(x)ist, XTG, N2N, Gigo, Mundo Unico, 2eros, Joe Snyder, Obviously, Baskit, Ajaxx63, LASC and Good Devil. Sizes XS to 3XL.

Eat Right Get Fit with the Trainers from World Gym Chicago

Many gay men are obsessed with their body image.

American men spend over-

•$4 billion a year on exercise equipment and health club memberships
•$3 billion on grooming aids and fragrances
•$800 million on hair transplants

•$1 BILLION on male cosmetic surgery procedures, procedures such as pectoral implants, chin surgery, and penis enlargement and procedures such as liposuction and rhinoplasty (nose jobs).

A Playgirl centerfold model of 1976 would need to shed 12 lbs of fat and gain 27 lbs of muscle to be a centerfold of today!   OK- we get –  many of us are obsessed!

But if you have a desire for a great body –  what are you doing about it? And do you know what you are doing?

Are you eating sensible and healthy??

I can’t tell you how many guys I see at the gym, spending as much as 2 hours a pop working out –  then eating garbage food.

Or my favorite, the guy who is on a treadmill with his coffee in one hand and his cell phone in the other!

You have to eat right. It’s about learning to control caloric intake throughout the year, in addition to working out. It is a lifestyle adaption, and many people don’t follow through or don’t  have the knowledge to make the right decisions.

We could write pages and pages of nutritional tips – and that’s what well do in coming months, so this is just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the trainers at World Gym of Chicago  on Montrose shared their thoughts and expertise and a few tips.

I like World Gym because of its comfortable atmosphere. The owner says, “World Gym is not a “health club”, but a gym dedicated to the improvement and maintenance of our members’ health and fitness.

Our philosophy is not to enroll hundreds of new members, induced to sign up by an endless string of “special offers”…but to build a strong base of loyal members and work hard to earn that loyalty in continuum. We have found that this philosophy has created an environment where men and women of all ages, from the “just getting started” to the “top athlete,” all exercise in a comfortable, non-frantic atmosphere. We are a result producing, not stress producing, gym.”

So here we go –  5 quick tips and pointers –

BASIC RULE #1: Our body weight is determined by the amount of energy that we take in as food and the amount of energy we expend in the activities of our day.

In basic terms, you can not eat more than you expend.  OR you must burn more than eat.  And you have to make healthy choices when you eat. You can’t consume buckets of sugar and fat and expect to get lean and build muscle.

When it comes to Protein;  Drink whey protein 20 minutes before a meal. The Minnesota Applied Research Center in Minneapolis found that the protein consumption caused a much greater loss in body fat than the placebo. The whey protein maintains blood sugar levels, which decreases appetite. And, the protein provides the building blocks your body needs to recover from your exercise program.

You can have TOO MUCH protein. The next time you urinate, take a gander into the toilet bowl. I’m serious.
Now tell me if your urine is bubbly and has a frothy consistency. Like beer.

If you’ve been supplementing your diet with protein in line with a bodybuilding routine, I’m going to bet you that chances are, you have bubbly urine. Now what does bubbly urine imply? proteinuria.

Proteinuria is a medical condition whereby too much protein is ingested for the body to utilize. The kidneys then work overtime to filter out this excess protein, and out it goes through your urine. Excess protein = bubbly urine.

2. Go nutty for nuts. Nuts are high in calories and fat – so it might seem strange that they’re a great weight release food. But they are. Researchers from Purdue University found that nuts are high in nutrients and antioxidants, that they help prevent degenerative diseases and that they are linked to reduced body fat. Nuts prevent hunger (consume a handful before going out to eat!), and they take a long time – and lots of energy – to digest. This research is providing new support for the caveman diet – which holds that we should eat nuts, berries, vegetables, lean meats, etc. – just like our ancestors.

3. Green tea is a fat loss miracle. Research from Maastricht University in Holland is making me a green tea believer. Green tea promotes weight release, weight maintenance, improved blood sugar regulation and even decreases abdominal fat! Of course, green tea doesn’t do it alone – you need to combine it with a comprehensive exercise and nutrition program.

 4. SUGAR. Eat foods that are low on the gylcemic index. The glycemic index  measures how fast certain foods increase blood sugars. Foods like white bread are very high on the index, and foods like whole grains are ranked much lower. Those foods that are high on the index seem to trigger fat storage – though researchers aren’t quite sure why. Here’s a list of how some of the most common foods rank .

5. SLEEP. Poor sleep = increased abdominal fat. Researchers from Wake Forest embarked on a multi-year study and found that too little – or too much – sleep led to increased risk of obesity and abdominal fat. 6 – 7 hours a night was found to be ideal.
