Paul Taylor Dance May 13

Moraine Valley to host Paul Taylor dance documentary AND performance

Dance enthusiasts are invited to Moraine Valley Community College for a documentary and a performance, both featuring Paul Taylor, a modern dance artist who is among the most acclaimed choreographers in American history.

The documentary, entitled “Paul Taylor: Creative Domain,” will be shown Tuesday, May 9, at 6 p.m., in the Dorothy Menker Theater in the Fine and Performing Arts Center, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills. The 82-minute presentation is free and open to the public, and is made possible in part with funding from Arts Midwest. “Creative Domain” is a rare, in-depth documentation through the lens of award-winning cinematographer Tom Hurwitz of how Taylor creates a single dance. It is directed by Kate Geis and produced by Robert Aberlin.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform Saturday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m., in the Dorothy Menker Theater. The show features dances that show cogent observations on life’s complexities and society’s thorniest issues. A virtuoso dancer himself for 20 years, Taylor turned exclusively to choreography in 1974.

Tickets for the May 13 performance are $30; $25 for students and senior citizens and are available online at morainevalley.edu/fpac or at the Box Office, located in Building F. For more information, call the Box Office at (708) 974-5500.

Cavalia Odysseo is HUGE!

Whether you like horses  or  not –  this  show  is  so much more than horses.  It’s  beautifully  choreographed  art  and  showmanship.   BIGGER  THAN  LIFE!

Imagine,  21  semi  trucks  delivered  the  show  to Chicago  over  6 weeks  ago.  a $30 million extravaganza!  The main tent stands  over 125  feet tall  and  occupies  some  58,000  square feet. From your seat,  at least to me,  the  stage  looked  2-3 times  the  size  of the space that the audience  occupies.

This unprecedented ‘traveling theatre’ is also composed of several exceptional features including its grandiose stage – larger than the United Center ice rink – that enables large-scale, cutting-edge creative performances. Surrounded by bleachers with 2,074 seats, the 17,500-square-foot stage requires 10,000 tons of stone, earth and sand to create so that it offers a vast space of freedom where 65 horses and 48 artists can display their intimate collaboration.

To help immerse the audience in the magical world of Odysseo, images of the most beautiful landscapes from around the world are projected throughout the show onto an 8,400-square-foot screen. Its technical grid, worthy of the largest permanent installations in Las Vegas, New York or London, can support 80 tons of equipment for the stage needs of the show, including a majestic life-sized merry-go-round.

Perhaps most amazing  is  when  40,000 gallons of water fills the stage!  Mind  blowing  what this show delivers! Music, Singing,  Dance, Acrobatic skills  and   65  of the most regal horses you ever see!

NEVERLAND Market Days Party Aug 12

neverland chicago
NEVERLAND CELEBRATES MARKET DAYS WITH ITS MOST EXTRAVAGENT EVENT EVER – “IMPERIAL HAREM”

Neverland, the Chicago-based dance producer known for its elaborate themes and production, is celebrating Market Days this year with its most extravagant event ever. Drawing inspiration from the costumes, the story, and the men of the blockbuster film, 300, IMPERIAL HAREM will take place Friday, August 12th at Metro (3730 N Clark St, Chicago).  Mexico City-based DJ Alex Acosta will headline the event; his first time headlining since spinning the very first Market Days Neverland three years ago.  Chicago DJ Alex Cabot will open and Imp Queen, Nico and Sara Andrews will host.  $40 early bird tickets to IMPERIAL HAREM are available now at www.NeverlandMarketDays.com.

“Market Days is even bigger than Pride in Chicago so we’re making this party more epic than anything we’ve done before,” proclaims Anthony DiFiore, Neverland’s founder and Creative Director. DiFiore is drawing inspiration for the night from a recent trip to Jerusalem where he learned how years of Ottoman rule left its imprint on the city.  “We’re going to experiment with a lot of cool ancient Persian and Ottoman elements that complement Metro’s massive steel stage,” he says.

At last year’s Market Days, DiFiore and his creative team celebrated Mayan Aztec culture with their “Origins” event, transforming Circuit Nightclub into a jungle complete with palm trees, a pyramid, and performers in colorful headdresses.  This year’s party takes Neverland back to the opulent Metro, the former concert hall world-renowned for its large stage and high ceilings.

Designers are building a structure of steel bars that will create an interactive platform loaded with lights and special effects devices. “There aren’t any gay parties in the U.S. that utilize truss the way we do,” adds DiFiore.

Market Days is the popular Chicago festival with stages, live bands and DJs during the day, followed by late-night dance parties.  Neverland’s IMPERIAL HAREM is the official Friday night main event.

“Today’s Neverland is like a Studio 54-style party,” says DiFiore.   “What sets our team apart is that our artists are true set and costume designers who are working with Neverland to showcase their talents.”

For tickets and additional information, visit www.NeverlandMarketDays.com.   Ticket Prices: $41/$51 and $60 at door.  Hard copy tickets available at Egoist Underwear (3526 N Halsted) in Boystown.

NEVERLAND CELEBRATES FOURTH ANNIVERSARY WITH ITS BIGGEST CHICAGO PRIDE EVENT EVER – “THE LOST BOYS”

Neverland, the Chicago-based dance producer renown for its elaborate themes and production, is celebrating its fourth anniversary this year with its biggest Chicago Pride event ever. NEVERLAND PRIDE 2016 will take place Friday, June 24th through Sunday, June 26th with three spectacular events including the main event, Saturday night’s “The Lost Boys” at Metro. Pre-sale tickets, including $95 weekend passes to all three events (a $35 savings), are available now at www.neverlandpride.com.

“It’s our four year anniversary and we’re finally doing a Neverland-themed Neverland,” proclaims Anthony DiFiore, Neverland’s founder and Creative Director. “Our parties are always a tribute to big imagination, so for this year’s Chicago Pride, our production team is building extravagant Peter Pan and Hook elements to the main stage.  Instead of traditional sets, we’re producing the night as more of a storyline with dancers and performers dressed as the famous characters.

“All the weekend’s events will be even more theatrical than ever before,” he promises.

NEVERLAND PRIDE launches Friday, June 24th at 11pm with a special edition of GayGlow at Charlie’s spun by NANDO, one of the most energetic and happening DJs on today’s national club scene.  The fun continues Saturday at 11pm when NEVERLAND presents “The Lost Boys” at Metro, a two-story concert hall that boasts one of the finest stages in Chicago.  It will be a surreal night of character-driven fantasy featuring a massive set. Barcelona-based DJ Ivan Gomez will man the decks alongside Chicago’s own Alexis-R.

Wrapping the weekend will be the Sunday night Closing Party at Mid, headlined by International superstar DJ Paulo. Paulo will present a dark and visceral production amidst one of Chicago’s most powerful sound systems.  Opening DJs Sean O’Hara and TVG will start the night at 10pm with Paulo taking over until 4am.

The first NEVERLAND took place July 2012. Billed as a costume party with club music, it was kind of like Halloween in the middle of the summer.   “We were an instant hit with the young crowd,” remembers DiFiore.  In order to create a big dance party brand, he needed everyone to come. “Guys in their late 30s and 40s would tell me they were too old for a costume party.”

In 2013, NEVERLAND introduced themes to the events, along with more elaborate production.   At “Walt Disney is Dead”, Brazil’s DJ Ana Paula dressed up as Maleficent while she was spinning. For the “Ratchet Ball”, producers brought in a graffiti artist from Michigan to create graffiti on large canvases hanging from the walls of Hydrate Nightclub.

Soon, every group was represented, from muscle guys to hipsters to drag queens and more.  “Today’s Neverland is like a Studio 54-style party,” says DiFiore.

Last year’s Pride party was a “Bougie Ball”.   Producers went all out with the theme, from putting fake rolls of hundred dollar bills as toilet paper in the bathrooms, to firing off fake money as confetti during Sasha Colby’s performance of “Bitch Better Have My Money”. Giant gold birdcages flanked the stage with gogo dancers wearing three-foot long lion headdresses.

“What sets our team apart is that many of our artists don’t even go to big dance parties. They’re a set designer who cares deeply about what the set is going to look like, or a costume designer who is developing their own label and is working with Neverland to showcase their talents.”

Even the crowd gets in on the act, with many of the attendees arriving in full costume. “Revelers are always welcome to wear whatever they want,” says DiFiore.  “Some will come in simple jeans and tees, and that’s fine! I’m excited to see lot of Pans, Hooks and of course, Tinkerbells.”

For tickets and additional information, visit www.neverlandpride.com.  Pre-sale tickets, including $95 weekend passes to all three events (a $35 savings), are available now.

“Navy Pier Pride 2016” Celebration Salutes Chicago’s LGBT Community

Chicago’s first-ever family Pride celebration outside of Lakeview

takes place at Navy Pier on Saturday, June 25

WOW!!!   THIS  IS  BIG  NEWS!

As it marks its 100th anniversary, Navy Pier will make Chicago history as it proudly hosts “Navy Pier Pride 2016,” the city’s first LGBT Pride celebration outside of the Lakeview neighborhood. This family-friendly event features entertainment and events throughout the Pier on Saturday, June 25. As part of the celebration, and for the first time in 28 years, Navy Pier is especially honored to display Chicago-centric sections of the internationally renowned The NAMES Project’s AIDS Memorial Quilt. All events for “Navy Pier Pride 2016” are free and open to the public, as part of the Fifth Third Bank Centennial Celebration®.

As one of Chicago’s top cultural destinations, “Navy Pier Pride 2016” is one of Navy Pier’s new arts, cultural and community programming initiatives. In addition to a lively atmosphere and a pier adorned in rainbows, highlights of this special Pride day-long event will include (times are approximate):

Noon – About Face Theatre’s IT’S FOR REAL is a collection of stories that connects issues around race, class, sexuality, age, gender, self-esteem, and family. Based on the true experiences of the performers in the show.

·         1 p.m. – A kickoff parade, led by the Lakeside Pride Marching Band.

·         1:30 p.m. – Performances by the legendary MILLY’s ORCHID SHOW, featuring Brigid Murphy as “Milly” and with an entire cast of such celebrities as Yuri Lane (“The Harmonica Beatbox Man”) and introducing rising gay icon, his 8-year old daughter, Delilah Rose, along with Alexa Grae, Robert Cornelius (former member of the group, “Poi Dog Pondering”), House-O-Matic, and many others.

·         5 p.m. – “Chicago’s Biggest Wedding,” officiated by Angelica Ross (a leading figure in the movement for transgender and racial equality, and star of the hit series, “Her Story”). Make history with us and your loved one, as we hold a massive marriage ceremony on The Pier.

·         7 p.m. –  For outdoor dancing, with the Chicago skyline as a backdrop, join house music superstar and Grammy Award-nominated producer, DJ RALPHI ROSARIO, in the Miller Lite Beer Garden.

·         10:15 p.m. –Guests will observe a moment of reflection to honor those lost in the tragic events in Orlando, followed by a celebration of life with a special Pride-themed fireworks spectacular.

Another historic and moving part of the day is the return of The NAMES Project’s AIDS Memorial Quilt. The much-celebrated Quilt began to take shape in 1987 with a single 3 x 6 foot panel created in San Francisco. Today, it weighs 54 tons and is composed of more than 48,000 individual panels, each one commemorating the life of someone who was lost to AIDS. In 1988, Navy Pier became one of the first venues nationally to put The Quilt on public display.

“Throughout its 100-year history, Navy Pier has led the way in demonstrating compassion and commitment, while celebrating diversity and inclusiveness. Welcoming people of all backgrounds is at the heart of Navy Pier’s core values. We are, truly, ‘the People’s Pier,’” said Marilynn Gardner, President and Chief Executive Officer for Navy Pier, Inc., the non-profit organization that operates Navy Pier. “We believe ‘Navy Pier Pride 2016’ will be an event that embraces the ideals of respect, tolerance, love, and inclusiveness.”

“Navy Pier Pride 2016” has been in the planning stages for months and is one of the initial projects as part of Navy Pier’s bold, new Arts & Discovery programming initiative. Leading the vision and direction of this 18-month Arts and Discovery strategic planning initiative is Navy Pier’s leadership team, consultants from Dickerson Global Advisors, as well as more than 100 Chicago non-profit arts and culture organizations. Navy Pier’s cultural and community programming is supported by the Polk Bros. Foundation.

Recently appointed Guest Artistic Director, Steve Abrams, brings creative leadership and vision to the first series of Arts and Discovery programs. The programs launch this summer as a pilot initiative. As a driving force in Chicago’s diverse cultural landscape for the last three decades, Abrams brings an innovative arts background to Navy Pier. His prior experience includes senior and executive leadership roles at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance at Millennium Park, and producing numerous theatrical productions.

Dance for Life Breaks Records

dance-for-life-chicago

A record-breaking number of more than 2,200 guests arrived at the Dance for Life benefit performance at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University on Aug. 15.

The awe-inspiring performance, featuring seven of Chicago’s top dance companies, grossed more than $335,000 to support the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and the Dancer’s Fund.

Dance for Life remains the only annual opportunity for the incredibly talented, world-renowned professional dancers of Chicago to unite artistically to help those in their own community and the greater Chicago area affected by HIV/AIDS and other critical health issues,” said Anthony Guerrero, Dance for Life’s director.

This year’s performance was preceded by a gala reception in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Chicago, where guests enjoyed a variety of savory and sweet appetizers and refreshing cocktails. Guests also tried their luck in the annual raffles to win one of three different travel and dance packages. Prizes included round-trip Southwest plane tickets, dance classes, tickets to the Sesame Street Studio Tour, and much more.

After the reception, shuttle buses were provided for the dance enthusiasts to the Auditorium Theatre for the unique performance, featuring the hilarious and talented Joey Bland and Tim Mason of The Second City as emcees. In between the dances, the actors entertained the audience with jokes and showed video footage of them attempting to learn how to dance.

The show opened with the graceful Joffrey Ballet, who performed an excerpt from “Viva Vivaldi”. The dancers displayed crisp and clean choreography while the joyful music from the classic composer filled the auditorium.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago had the house in awe with its two contrasting numbers. The first was “Second to Last”, which showcased elegant dancers gliding across the floor. The second number, “Wicked Heart” was from its collaboration with The Second City’s “The Art of Falling”, which featured a comical duet between a man and his blow-up doll.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project’s toe-tapping number “In the Beginning” was unique because the dancers had no soundtrack to go with their performance – the only thing the audience could hear was the blend of different rhythms from their tap shoes.

Act I closed with Giordano Dance Chicago’s jazzy arrangement of “Feelin’ Good Sweet”, which featured sultry, Fosse-style dance moves to an original arrangement of “Get Happy” and incidental music.

C5 opened Act II with “Garland Suite”, featuring the nostalgic music of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. Dancers performed on five large swings wearing gowns and tuxedos to keep the performance lighthearted while channeling Garland’s spirit.

After C5 left the stage, the emcees drew the raffle tickets while the artists of LEVELdance danced to various uplifting tunes that matched the “lucky” theme.

Same Planet Different World was next with “To Have and To Hold,” a jaw-dropping, mesmerizing spectacle of tumbling and rolling on and off rows of long wooden benches.

River North Dance Chicago impressed the audience with its strong yet vulnerable choreography in excerpts from “In the End”. The dancers were only wearing briefs, so every single movement stood out.

To close the show, renowned choreographer Randy Duncan brought down the house with the passionate finale “Stand By Me,” dedicated in memory of choreographer Paul Christiano, who passed away this year. This was the first time Duncan held open auditions for the finale, so there were many enthusiastic and fresh new faces onstage.

THEY’RE BACK!

Cirque du Soleil  returned to Chicago this week  with KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities.  Now through  September 20th!

The stage is magical  and  the acts amazing, as always!

The stage moves and turns, giving everyone unique views, no matter where are you seated. The shows mixes vaudeville, Broadway, aerial stunts, and old world charm in an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a Seeker discovers that in order to glimpse the marvels that lie just below the surface, we must first learn to close our eyes.

In his larger-than-life curio cabinet, the Seeker is convinced that there exists a hidden, invisible world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams lie waiting. A collection of otherworldly characters suddenly steps into his makeshift mechanical world. When the outlandish, benevolent characters turn his world upside down with a touch of poetry and humor in an attempt to ignite the Seeker’s imagination, his curios jump to life one by one before his very eyes.

Of course, my favorite act  was the “Siamese twins” hanging in the air from straps are separated at last when they fly high above the stage in a series of acrobatic figures, sometimes as a pair, sometimes solo. The two artists soar to impressive heights and crisscross above the stage while performing synchronized figures that require flawless timing.  (ABOVE). – Reminded me of the sexy Atherton Twins from the Varakai show….

The show was filled  with a huge cast of talent. A group of 13 artists perform spectacular sequences of perfectly synchronized acrobatics and human pyramids that showcase the amazing agility of the human body. In addition to standing three and four high on each other’s shoulders, the artists take off, somersault and crisscross in the air on three levels: the ground, a monolith positioned centre-stage, and in the audience.

Whether you have seen Cirque before  or not – this show  will  wow you!
