Just For Laughs with Ellen in Chicago Plus LUCHA VA VOOM

With over 25 years of experience running the world’s largest and most prestigious comedy festival and a reputation for fresh and innovative thinking, Just For Laughs  and TBS will collaborate as TBS presents a “Very Funny” Festival: Just For Laughs. The ground-breaking U.S. comedy festival will hit Chicago June 15-19, 2010.  5 nights, 12 venues, 100+  comedians.

The  festival will include more than 70 shows throughout various venues across the Chicago area and will feature performances from the usual suspects  such as top-name comedians as Ellen DeGeneres, Cedric the Entertainer, Russell Peters, Denis Leary and Aziz Ansari. From concert events to TV tapings, “Nasty Shows” to cutting-edge talent and homegrown performances featuring the best local Chicago comedians, sketch and improv performers and troupes – the second edition of Just For Laughs Chicago is about to blow you away!

For something far out and REALLY different, there is  LUCHA VA VOOM ! at Park West Theatre on June 16th. YOU MUST SEE IT – TO BELIEVE IT!   Mexican Masked Wrestling + Burlesque + Comedy = Lucha VaVOOM: a non-stop, action-packed scream-a-thon, where Mexican masked wrestlers flip and fly, performing breathtaking acrobatic feats. WHAT?!

It’s good vs. evil incarnate. It is CRAZY!  In between matches, the finest handpicked burlesque acts from around the world delight crowds because Lucha VaVOOM likes a little sexo with their violencia. Plus, for color commentary, they’ve even got comedians thrown into the mix!

The phenomenon began in August 2003 as a one-off event… and el resto es historia. They’ve played venues across the continent, from Vegas to LA to Toronto.

In 2005, they performed at the infamous Sony E3 party at Dodger Stadium and stole the spotlight from the Pussycat Dolls. In 2009, Lucha VaVOOM made its triumphant New York debut at Webster Hall, where the packed house spontaneously chanted “”Ho-ly sh*t!” Heck, even Jack Black commented that “Lucha VaVOOM is the sh*t!”

Rolling Stone magazine said the show is “enough to make even the most jaded Hollywood insider jump up and yell ‘Smackdown!’… so now it’s up to you to see it for yourself and come up with cheeky interjections of your own. ¡Fuacata!

Lucha Va Voom will offer 2 shows on the 16th.
See more  Lucha Va Voom online with videos
The festival itself runs June 15th-19th.

(Photo – His/her name is Karis, and he’s one of the variety act performers who will be part of the Lucha VaVOOM shows on June 16 at the Park West.  Karis does an act with hula hoops, often in drag or some sort of boy-drag…hard to categorize, but always gender-bending and fierce!)

Fuerza Bruta Look Up – Takes Chicago By Storm!

THE AUDITORIUM THEATRE
OF ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY
 Is a gorgeous historic landmark.

But get this; when you go see the newest theatre sensation FUERZA BRUTA: Look Up ,  which is already taking Chicago by storm, you won’t be sitting in the seats!

Let me explain.  When you first walk into the lounge area of the theatre, before the show starts, you know you are in for something special! Pumping beats and  club music fills the beautiful mosaic tiled halls, the ceiling is dimly lit, accented by colored lights,  bartenders are mixing up drinks and the smell of  delicious empanadas (by 5411, the BEST empanadas in Chicago ) wafts thru the air.

There is a buzz in the air! This is NOT your normal theatre lobby experience. As showtime approaches, the nearly 900 theatre-goers are escorted into the theatre, past the seats, and up onto the stage. For the next 75 minutes, you experience an alternate universe, filled with flying performers, engaging dream sequences, and a multidimensional slip-n-slide swimming pool raises and lowers  over your head.

This is like NOTHING you have ever seen or experienced! You are part of the show. Right on the stage, interacting with performers and other people at the show. This is a non-stop collision of  dynamic music, visceral emotion and kinetic aerial imagery that resembles nothing less than a fantastic mash-up between aerial theatre and a late-night dance party rave.

No matter how short or how tall you are, everyone has a good viewing spot of the action  and will quite possibly experience something different. A loud speaker’s broadcast tells us to be attentive to the directions of how to move, where and when.

Then the black  t-shirted STAFF begins. They direct us like a commercial jet on an airport runway. With their elbows bent and stiff fingered palms in the air, they signal us to fit inside the white line of tape on the floor. As each individual moves closer to the next, breaking down the barrier of personal space –  you can choose where you wish to stand and by whom. You can choose to be right in the thick of things or stand back further and observe. You decide how you wish to experience the show.

Huge scaffolding with performers on it create performance art while the infectious music plays and you feel the audience all getting into the beats. As the scaffolding moves thru the crowd you are directed to move this way and that.

All of a sudden, the performers start tearing apart their stage piece by piece and jump down into the crowd to mingle, dance and play.

Next we look up! There is a clear pool dangling  35 feet overhead filled with performers sliding thru the water. The pool  eventually drops to eye level and touches your head. You can actually “touch” the performers thru the clear material. It is mind-blowing. The guy next to me is shooting pictures with his  phone and tweeting them and posting them to Facebook.  CAMERAS  ARE  ALLOWED, and encouraged, just no flash photography.

For a little over an hour, the performance drags us back and forth between the earth and the sky. All the while, the pace of the show continues to increase. The characters on earth gain courage from the joy taking place in the sky and they dance and dance and dance until the lead character nearly breaks free from his tie. Then the performers climb from the moving walkway up a staircase and through a door that reveals nothing, also known as a place to leap into.

Fuerza Bruta combines the dramatic theatrical experience of classical theater while at the same time challenges the limits of communication by using sound and movement to tell a loosely thematic story to the audience. We explore the possibility of expressing deep and thoughtful ideas in new ways. And by freeing the ways in which we can communicate, we are able to speak to extremely diverse groups of people.

“After amazing success with Fuerza Bruta in London, Buenos Aires, New York (where the show is entering it’s third year) and Taipei, we are thrilled to bring this very special show to Chicago!”  says  Fernando Moya,  one of the Argentine producers of the show.

“We have been trying to get this show here for over 5 years, since we first saw De La Guarda , the first sensational piece created by Diqui James. Broadway in Chicago is extremely happy to finally bring this awesome show to the glorious theatre,” explained Lou Raizin, President of Broadway in Chicago.

Breaking free from the confines of spoken language and theatrical convention, Fuerza Bruta: Look Up is an event where worlds collide and reality takes a back seat. It’s theatre; it’s art; and you are part of it!

This is one of those, you have to see it to believe it shows.  AMAZING!

FYI – in New York City, Fuerza Bruta hosts a monthly  Boys Night , where the show is taken over by an all male cast!  Broadway in Chicago has hinted, something similar will be offered in Chicago, as well.

Gay Dating Tip – The One Exercise That’ll Help You Meet Gay Men

Meeting with gay attractive men
and striking up a conversation is probably not easy for a lot of you gay men who are just starting their relationship in this particular direction. Although, for some gay men, talking to another man and being completely comfortable enough to attract attention may not be as easy as it sounds, and you may require some help. We’ll unload some burden off your shoulder by telling you that you can make it possible and even enjoyable for yourself and in your area, it won’t be that hard to find the right guy for yourself. But of course, like anything else in life, meeting gay men will require some tips and a lot of skill.

Firstly, to build the self-confidence and demeanor that you are lacking, you need to set a few goals for yourself. For instance, you can mentally tell yourself what you hope to achieve when you set out to meet gay men one evening, whether you’re looking to make a friend or looking for a much serious relationship. Then, since you will be aware of exactly what your weaknesses are, you can focus on curbing them and bringing out the qualities of yourself that truly make you who you are. Setting such goals can truly boost the self-confidence you need to meet gay men.

But let us warn you; do not in any way, set up unreasonable goals for yourself. You know yourself the best and you know exactly what you can achieve as far as meeting gay men is concerned. You also need to keep track of what exactly you want to achieve and then, set realistic goals for yourself. If you go out to a gay bar, you may expect to meet a nice guy but don’t be bent upon meeting one and finding what you want in him.

It is always a good idea to be talkative, not talkative in an annoying way but in a charming and alluring manner that brings out your personality. Make an effort to talk freely with all men, whether you like them or not and try to make your best impression on just anyone, whether in a bar or in a party. Getting yourself to talk easily and naturally is perhaps, the easiest and biggest way to meet gay men and find the one you’re attracted to.

To be better at picking up gay men and more importantly, the ones you are attracted to, being quiet and reserved is the worst thing you can do. Taking interest in everything, making light conversation with anyone and taking an interest in everyone’s concerns is something that attracts all gay men and using that can help you attract men to yourself. Such conversational and communication techniques can be much important and perhaps even more than your clothes and hair when trying to meet attractive gay men. Remember, that there are men interested in you and it is you who has to bring yourself to their attention in the most charming manner.

Jacks on Halsted – Boystown Chicago Bistro and Brunch Spot

Jack’s on Halsted,
 owned by chef Jack Jones,

was selected as best new restaurant  by Chicago Magazine, when they opened. And since then, have won numerous awards and recently reinvented themselves with a fresh new menu.

A contemporary, American restaurant, Jack’s features global cuisine incorporating Asian, Mediterranean and New World making it a true American blend.

For the past ten years Jack’s has been serving distinctive, skillfully prepared, high quality food for all to enjoy. “We strive to use only the finest and freshest ingredients available. We are passionate about two things, serving healthful, excellent food and being sensible about our prices. Jack’s on Halsted is commited to offering the best food value possible.” – says Chef Jack Jones , who has worked at some of Chicago’s finest dining establishments including  Yoshi’s Café, Printer’s Row, Terczak’s and Spiaggia.

Located in Boystown on the corner of Halsted and Belmont in Lakeview, Jack’s is in the most diverse and exciting neighborhood in all of Chicago. With Blue Man Theater just steps away and some of Chicago’s most unique shops, not to mention clubs, bars and restaurants, Lakeview is a happening spot. Jack’s is the place to start or end your night out, be sure to ask for a table at the window!

Along with the new menu came some other new improvements. Drew Johnson, a longtime employee of Jack’s, recently became Jack’s business partner and managing partner.  The restaurant is now open 7 days  for dinner plus a hip Sunday brunch with  DJ  Gerry and guest bartenders who serve up $2 Mimosas, $3 Bloody Marys and $5 Special Brunch Martinis. Food at brunch  ranges from Omletes and Classic Eggs Benedict to Orange Flavored French Toast and Steak and Eggs.

ALSO  NEW,  a  charming  patio out back, away from the street noise. Plus,  Late Night Food!  Wednesday thru Saturday food is now available till  1am.  In these economic challenging times Jacks is also offering  $6  Martinis  everyday,  and Tuesdays  half-price bottles  of wine. There is also a 3-course Dinner menu available for just $25.95 that offers a great selection of starters, entrees and a dessert!

You will find everything from steak to seafood to brugers here in a wide selction of prices. Jones’s “pork tasting” pulls out all the stops by offering a three-way sampling of thyme- and shallot-infused grilled pork tenderloin, smoky Memphis-style pulled pork, and succulent, fall-off-the-bone baby backs. We generally prefer our ribs to put up a fight but the Asian spices and juicy texture more than compensate. Maple-sparked mashed sweet potatoes offer extra allure to this hog triptych!

 Pat Bruno, Chicago Sun-Times  said,
The cuisine style at Jack’s on Halsted is essentially contemporary American. However, within the broad interpretation of that style of cooking, there is a definite license to wheel and deal those meals. …(Read full review )

Phil Vettel, Chicago Tribune
…Jack’s is a moderately priced American bistro whose menu presents familiar dishes tweaked with Jones’ personal touch. “It’s like Woody Allen’s second and third movies,” quips Jones. “Different, but the underlying neuroses are the same.” …(Read full review )

Steven Brinberg IS Barbra Streisand – Chicago’s

“When you first hear Steven’s Simply Barbra CD, for the first brief moment, you almost think, ‘My God! Is that really her?’ [Streisand] It’s so captivating! Not only does he have a wonderful take on her — not at all mean-spirited — and this ability to imitate her, he also captures a lot of moments and nuances that are terrific. It was very impressive.” – Marvin Hamlisch

Me too! When I first heard Steven sing Barbra, I was quite impressed. He was just in Chicago and I had the chance to see and hear him perform live.

Back to Babs!  Steven Brinberg  is the premier Barbra Streisand impressionist, performing his incredible show, Simply Barbra, to international acclaim both on stage and television (and performing twice with none other than Marvin Hamlisch!) as he pays homage to all that is Streisand!

Steven does not lip-sync his performances but accurately portrays Streisand with his own voice! With over a decade of performing experience, his amazing show has Steven in demand literally worldwide!

We chatted briefly in Chicago, then Steven was headed off to Ireland. His career started quite by accident as he tells DEEP DISH …”I was performing cabaret shows as myself, and I would sing snippets of other voices – Cher, Katharine Hepburn, Billie Holiday – but my Barbra was the most popular. One day a friend suggested that I do an entire Barbra show, but I was like “I don’t even look like her and I don’t know anything about makeup.” But I finally booked a couple of weeks to perform as Barbra in New York – and the show just took off.”

Singing Streisand is a rarity. “Other than the veteran performer Jim Bailey, I am the only other male Barbra (that I know of) who sings live. Hers is such a unique voice that it is very hard to do properly. I was inspired when in an interview Barbra was asked what she thought of all the men who do her and she said “I wish they’d do me better!” and I thought I am going to be the first one to do her justice and NOT cross my eyes and be mean…I wanted to be flattering to her because I am such a fan…..I have never met Barbra…..but she knows me. Her manager hired me to sing at Donna Karan’s birthday party – and through her stage director, she told me what to say at the party. We almost met when she was at the same play I was – but I lost my nerve to go over to her. She later learned that I was there and said, “Why didn’t he say hello?” But I just wasn’t ready to meet her…”

Steven has been able to see Babs perform on several occassions – giving him an opportunity to study her up close.
He tells Barbra news

“I had a friend in Los Angeles who knew someone who knew someone who could get tickets for the 1986 ONE VOICE concert. There were only 500 seats and it wasn’t easy. When he said yes, then I had to convince my parents to give me the money… a lot for a kid to spend! Even then, people were saying this might be her last concert. It was well worth it. We were served dinner on her tennis court. I saw Bette, Whoopi, Goldie,Walter Matthau (they must have made up from DOLLY) everyone seemed to be famous except my party. It was amazing to hear her sing live for the first time and think “This is not a record!”.

More recently, I was in Australia while she was there also, and Marvin got my pianist and I great seats up close (the concert in the rain in Sydney). It was wild. I did my show one night, saw her show the next night, did my show the next night, and people in the audience waved the flashlights they got at her show! I did a lot of TV while I was there and am told that she saw me on one of the shows! I hope it was the one where the lighting was so beautiful (The Bert Show) cause that’s important to me, and to Barbra. The brief scene I have in the new movie CAMP (after the very end credits) is also lit beautifully. I think she’ll be pleased at how I look as her.”

What’s next for Steven Brinberg?
“Continuing to tour all over the place – and I’m hoping to perform again as myself. My real voice and look are so different than Barbra – but I’m not giving up Barbra. I would just like to be a boy also. I’d love to be a CSI killer and have people go, “Guess what else he does.” “

Steven will perform Milwaukee PRIDE  FEST  June 11-13  –
