Cook County and Chicago Gay Domestic Partner Registry

Last week, Cook County celebrated their 5 year anniversary of it's
 Domestic Partnership Registry.

Cook County's Domestic Partnership Registry enables same-sex couples living in Chicago and suburban Cook County to formally record their relationships.

The Cook County Clerk's office administers and maintains the registry and issues Domestic Partnership Certificates.

Since marriage is not available to gay people (yet -  Mayor Daley is all for gay marriage in Chicago) in Chicago, the registry is at least good way to document your partnership.

Some employers may ask for it, if applying for joint insurance, however obtaining a Domestic Partnership Certificate from Cook County does not automatically qualify you or your partner for employer-sponsored benefits, nor does it confer survivorship or ownership rights.

It has been a positive step in the right direction - and gay couples are encouraged to use the regsitry. The more couples that register, builds a stronger voice for legalizing gay marriage / unions in  Chicago.
