GayCo Productions is a not-for-profit theatre ensemble that specializes in creating sketch-comedy revues based on gay/lesbian themes. Since starting as a lesbigay focused workshop at the Second City Training Center in 1996, they have performed for massive, enthusiastic, sexy gay audiences in Chicago and across the country!
GayCo has moved into their new home at the Center on Halsted. Their newest creation/ revival Whitney Houston, We Have a Problem! will run Fridays and Saturdays, April 18 - May 25, 2008 in the Hoover-Leppen Theatre at Center on Halsted, 3636 N Halsted, 3rd floor .
GayCo Productions remounts their inaugural sketchcomedy revue, Whitney Houston, We Have a Problem, exactly eleven years after it was first created at theSecond City. Originally directed for the stage by Jeff Richmond (now a Producer and Musical Director of 30 Rock), Whitney Houston blurs the line between sketch and musical revue, borrowing Second City's format of intricately interwoven sketches, short blackouts and pointed political satire. Taking its cues from the struggles of its namesake, Whitney digs in: Ad Execs struggle to reach the gay demographic; Terrified parents struggle to avoid their gay kids; James Bondage struggles to top his nemesis, Octoclitty; a trio of nuns struggle with body image; and the gay community struggles with whether there is any such thing as a 'gay community.' The humanity of it all.
This Fall, GayCo will team up with Schadenfreude. They will present "This Country's F$cked
or God Damn America !" - in a joint effort.
"With the election year thrust upon us, we are looking to our newly elected leaders to fix the economy, the war, the environment, the health care system, the educational system, fill potholes, feed and shelter us, deliver us from harm and read to us when it is bed time. It's a lot to ask, but that's why they get paid the big bucks in special interest money."
The program will feature a variety of acts standing on a soapbox, cleverly disguised as jokes. Whether you are democrat or republican, liberal or conservative - we can all agree on one thing: This Country's F$cked.
